[Midnight Hotel] February catch-all

Characters: Anyone, everyone.
Date: Month of February, 2016 (2017 in-game).
Location: The Midnight Hotel.
Situation: Catch-all post! Feel free to use this post for anything that happens within the Midnight Hotel during the month, using the subject header to label specific rooms or for specific people. See also the OOC note at the bottom.
Warnings/Rating: Mark your threads if content warnings become applicable, please!

This month the Hotel’s wards are back up to snuff, thanks to the fog being blown off. Notably, the main doors open into all sectors once more – which is a relief to anyone who made a habit of using the Hotel for a shortcut. As always, the windows and garage doors still only open into Central.

There’s a sizeable flow of traffic in and out, mostly due to visitors from Hatal and their curiosity. Apparently it’s gotten around that the Hotel is magical and a common location for Foreigners and odd things, and as a result there’s a bit of a ‘tourist’ feel in the Hotel this month. Foreigners may find themselves being treated as novelties and asked to do magic, even if they aren't magical. The igheeri seem mostly interested in critiquing the architecture (for which they are too tall) and the sinayg can be found trying to listen to the magic in the walls (the exact sound of which is apparently a subject of hot debate), while the muin just seem to want to immerse themselves in the ‘culture’.

About mid-month Anton will toss out and ban a group of five Jagaiz fighters, to the surprise of no one who’s seen them for more than five minutes. They’re all the sort which are good enough at fighting to think they’re the best even though none of them are champions; low-grade braggers and bullies, essentially. Other, politer Jagaiz fighters who visit, if asked, will confirm that their lot isn’t particularly well-liked and their means of gaining sponsorship is a bit suspect.

None of the five suffer more than a few broken bones (and a concussion), and the loss of a few cheap items they forfeited by being forcibly shown the door.

Otherwise, for the observant, much of the furniture has been ‘labelled’ with small English or Chinese engravings in unobtrusive places – courtesy of River. Visitors from Hatal apparently find this ‘culture’ of naming possessions ‘delightful’. In other news, there’s a new kedan by the name of Dardul permanently residing at the Hotel. He’s a bit vacant with obvious memory issues, and is liable to forget people who talk to him; he’s regularly visited by Milyn and is under the care of another permanent resident, Malcil, who seems to prefer not to talk much with strangers himself.

In other other news, Anton can be seen wearing a colourful party hat all day on the 7th of the month, with bonus party tooter in his jacket pocket which he will absolutely use to greet Erskine every time they talk (while wearing a very bland expression).

[ooc: The Midnight Hotel’s status page is available here, with the rules at the top and ongoing status at the bottom. PLEASE POST TO THE STATUS PAGE IF YOUR CHARACTER WOULD LIKE A ROOM, JOB OR AREA IN THE GARAGE, OR ARE MOVING OUT. Anton will manufacture means of payment until Foreigners are able to properly offer recompense or choose to move out.]

Of course. [Simon nods.] If this person can trust me to give them a diagnosis, I will do everything to ensure their privacy.

[Raine nods in return, a sharp, decisive thing.]

All right. Here, come with me.

Anton has the data saved on his tablet.

[She'll lead Simon back to Anton's office -- there's a brief pause at the front desk for Raine to murmur to Anton about what she's doing and retrieve said tablet from him before continuing on -- and once the door's nudged shut, Raine bends her head over the tablet. A few easy manipulations later, she passes it over to Simon, with the readings and scans they have courtesy of Tony cued up.]

[Simon is quiet the whole time as Raine retrieves the data from Anton, then when she hands the data over, he rubs his chin with one hand as he looks over it. Brain scans made him a little uneasy after the time he'd looked at River's mutilated one, but as usual, knowing there was a patient helped him push those unpleasant emotions back.]

Does the patient show any sort of outward symptoms, even if they might not be immediately obvious to others? Do they, for example, get sick easily or have trouble recovering from illness or injuries? It might help me make a diagnosis if I know some more details.

[Raine leans against Anton's desk and grimaces.]

The difficulty is that the patient in question is a sorcerer, and his particular talent, while fairly taxing, also grants him exceptional physical resilience. For quite a long time, he had no idea that anything was wrong, attributing -- for instance -- the tremor in his hands to the negative parts of that magic.

You may recall how my artes function-- I fuel and speed the patient's own regenerative process. The last time his condition flared up, that made things worse, though a magical scan did indicate occurring damage. Therefore, I can only assume his own body is attacking itself somehow.

[Raine sounds distinctly unhappy about this particular part-- she hates that memory.]

He does, however, recall spells of instability as early as seventeen or nineteen. The most recent, the incident I refer to, was some few months ago, but was triggered by an external factor. Poison. Even moving was difficult, to say nothing of standing.

...I'm informed that impotence is also a demonstrated symptom.

[Simon listened attentively to Raine's explanation, his mind already going through possibilities, though the magic complicated things. He wished he'd had more experience on that front, but, well, wishing was't going to do anything to help Anton.]

So if anything helps augment or accelerate his magic, the symptoms worsen? That sounds a bit like a reaction in humans called a cytokine storm. More or less, the body sends too many white blood cells to fight off an infection, and that can cause damage to body tissues if there is too much of a buildup of cells in one place. I could be completely off base here, but... if the buildup of magic in his body becomes too much, there may be nowhere else for it to go and nothing for it to do besides turn inward. He may not even consciously be doing so, and the magic goes inward and attacks his body because he doesn't want it to harm anyone else.

[Simon paced a little, restless.]

There could be some sort of neurological disorder at work here, though. Hand tremors, for instance, can be a sign of some kind of degenerative condition. Or maybe it's a combination of the two. How old is he now?

[Raine shakes her head, but only halfway, stopping the motion partway. He's... half right.]

No, it's the physical that my artes affect, not the magical. I simply feed the body the power and the formula to heal at several times the natural rate-- speeding up the natural processes, in effect. That's part of why I'm reasonably sure this condition and his magic are separate things which play into each other, rather than one being a side-effect of the other.

His magic is emotional in nature. In essence, he has given his negative emotions form, and then trapped them within himself, to be let out in dangerous situations. It requires a great deal of control, however, as it constantly wants to be set free, and it exhausts him when he does let it out.

[She's talking about his emotions like they're a creature, and that's entirely intentional, because in all effect they are.]

I don't believe even he's exactly sure, but he's over five hundred. Younger than six hundred, however.

[Her matter-of-fact tone implies ballparking to within a century is not at all out of the ordinary.]

Hmmmm...

[And there went the tip of one finger into his mouth, a nervous habit. This was most definitely going outside his area of expertise, but Raine had asked, and River seemed fond of Anton, so he tried.]

I have to admit, I am feeling a bit in over my head here. [Simon sounds frustrated, but he forces himself to even out his tone, thinking aloud to himself.] Just to make sure that I am following along- if he has some sort of neurological disorder, that could be worsening the negative impact his magic has on his body, correct? And the reverse is true- the negative emotions of the magic are taking a toll on his body and making the physical symptoms worse.

As am I.

[Raine offers Simon a tiny, sympathetic smile.]

As much expertise as I may have with healing artes, I'm no doctor. We can certainly spend some time on magical theory, however, which may help you in turn.

And yes, that's broadly correct. I believe the two things exacerbate each other, with the addendum that the resilience his magic gives him then cloaks the underlying cause further. Does that make sense?
pompous_today: (focused)

[personal profile] pompous_today 2016-03-04 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
It does, yes- because he is able to heal so rapidly, it can be hard to pinpoint where the source of the problem is. I have a few ideas of what it might be, however- again, I am leaning toward a neurological disorder of some sort. Probably not a progressive one, since he has lived for 600 years or so and his symptoms are not more severe, but it could be something his magic is unable to heal for some reason. I believe I will take you up on the offer to study magic theory further, however.
ruinsprofessor: (calm)

[personal profile] ruinsprofessor 2016-03-04 08:53 am (UTC)(link)
[Raine nods.]

I'm inclined to agree with you, yes.

We can set aside some time in the near future for magical theory, certainly. Although I'm not from the same world as Anton and the others, I've had a good deal of time to study their approaches to magic, as well.

It will also be helpful for you to speak to Anton directly, whether it's now or later.
pompous_today: (please be careful with that)

[personal profile] pompous_today 2016-03-06 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Whatever you can teach me would be appreciated, believe me. I have no frame of reference for magical maladies at all, but I will try my best to learn.

[Simon nodded.]

I will do that- and perhaps ask him and Tony if they would be willing to do some more body scans so I can see if anything is amiss outside of the brain.
ruinsprofessor: (smile)

[personal profile] ruinsprofessor 2016-03-09 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
The willingness to learn goes a long way.

[Despite the subject, Raine gives him a small smile, entirely approving.]

That's a good idea. My initial focus was on the brain and nervous system, but a broader focus may bring something else to light. I'm sure Tony will be willing to help.

Simon-- thank you.

[Simon smiled back.]

You're welcome, and I am glad to help, believe me- to repay some of the kindness that has been shown to me since I arrived. And, of course, as a doctor, it is in my oath to help whoever may need it.
ruinsprofessor: (i see)

[personal profile] ruinsprofessor 2016-03-15 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
[She's heard of that oath. It sounds noble, to her, but impractical. Raine herself swore no such thing when learning healing artes.]

You know where to find me -- and Anton -- if you have any further questions.

I think that's everything for now, however.

[He nods affirmatively.]

I will be sure to contact you if so.
