[Midnight Hotel] June catch-all

Date: Month of JUNE, 2016 (2017 in-game).
Location: The Midnight Hotel.
Situation: Catch-all post! Feel free to use this post for anything that happens within the Midnight Hotel during the month, using the subject header to label specific rooms or for specific people. See also the OOC note at the bottom.

After Rey and Kylo’s fight, and subsequent ejection from the Hotel, the Hotel is undergoing some repairs for the first part of the month. Although the clean-up happened well before June begins, the stairs and some of the furniture in particular needs some replacing. As a result, sitting areas in the lobby are a bit of a commodity this month and traffic upstairs is funnelled through the common-room staircase (which has the same magical conveniences as the main stairs, for those who need the stairs to not be stairs).

The wards are also being checked and fine-tuned, though Anton mostly does those after hours; even still, night owls will have some brief opportunities to see the arrays of multi-directional sigils in the walls which dictate the Hotel’s workings.

Anton is taking this opportunity to have a second console system installed beside the first; there is a partition between them, but they’re still generally open to the lobby. A small team of Metalworkers can thus be seen around the Hotel for the month, as they’re taking their time and using the opportunity to see whether they can figure out the undetermined error showing up in a handful of other consoles.

There are one or two instances of gang-members boasting about their new roles, which causes a few disagreements about authority; but for the most part these are smoothed over easily. In general, there’s fewer non-patrons lingering around the Hotel this month – though by no means is it empty – simply because many of them are also using the facilities offered by Dara Deis shelter. Especially because of the repairs, it’s easier to shift for a while.

Luckily, the kitchen was undamaged, so the restaurant will continue to be open in the evenings as usual!

"I've heard stories of Master Kenobi in my world, I can only imagine how it must have been to meet him in person." Poe shouldn't be surprised, not after meeting Padmé Amidala and Han but the whole alternate-universes and time-lines things is still blowing his mind.

"Can I ash who's that other person?"

"His name is Galen.

"So you're from the same world, but are not a force user?"

"Afraid not. I'm as dexterous in the Force as a potato sack." Poe said with some humour, not even feeling bad about it.

"I'm as common as common can be. Not everyone's is gifted with the Force in my world. I talked to Galen when I first arrived, he seems like a wise man."

Or at least someone who had learned from his big mistakes.

"That's good. I talked to a Kylo Ren over the console, and I'm glad he was not my first exposure to force users. I might have come away with a different opinion of them."

Poe can't help but make a face at that. He knows Kylo way too well.

"He's a dangerous man with a trigger temper. it would be better if you avoided him at all, miss. You know the difference between Dark and Light Force users?"

"If he sets out to accomplish what he claims, I'll do no such thing. He'll find me standing between him and whatever twisted goals he's concocted." Her face was one of determination and hardness.

She softens at Poe's question, and thinks about it. "Obi-wan mentioned only 'Jedi' and 'those who have lost their way.'"

Poe blinked then slowly a really amused, but sincere, smile appeared on his face. "I like you."

If she's going to kick Kylo's ass, he wants a a seat in the first row, pretty please. Strong, badass women are something he always admired.

"You see, were I come from there's the Force who exist in all living things but if you are a Force user the way you channel and use it determines and change your way of life. The jedi were peacekeepers, they have a spiritual view of the Force. Dark users see the Force as a tool to gain power and channel it giving into extreme emotion and passions."

"Ah. Thank you?" She's new at this. All of it.

"Very polarizing, sounds like." There were parallels to her life as a Tenno as well. With powers come politics.

Poe laugh briefly at her reaction. "Sorry I am just happy to see that people here is willing to fight for what is right. It reminds me of home, in a way."

He knows that might not be a very good explanation but is the one he has.

"A bit. I believe in grey areas, if you ask me. But I'm not really an expert in the Force. Galen might know more than me."

"I'll make sure to ask him about it."

Poe's laugh is infectious and she finds herself smiling. "Well thank you. I'm not used to people showing appreciation for something like that. The Tenno aren't well-liked where I come from."

"You won't be disappointed." He didn't know Galen all that much yet but the man was easy to talk with and seemed a good listener too.

"No? That's a shame, I think it's really important. Then again I've been a pilot all my life. The Tenno is your species...?"

Hopefully that's not rude to ask.

"Not species. I'm still human just... more, is how the Lotus put it. It's complicated."

"There are different kinds of metahumans where I come from and also humans who are much more than average, like Force users. It's not my case but I wouldn't judge. I won't pry, however, I understand 'complicated'."

And it's a legit answer as any other.

"Thank you," she said, smiling weakly. It was kind of an exhausting topic to explain to every person she met. It really wasn't a first conversation topic.

"So you weren't a Jedi, what did you do back in your world? Construction?"

"Don't mention it." He could only imagine what it could be but as promised, Poe won't pry. He also knew that people were more than just their backstories.

"I'm a pilot, part of the military. I have my own squadron and we fight to protect people from a rising thread back in our world called the First Order. You might have heard of it from Kylo Ren?"

She shook her head. "No. I only know that he plans to amass power here."

"Ah, well in that regard you know more than me. I'm still trying to figure out what's the deal between the Snakes and the Metalworkers."

[ten_zero]

"They're powerful families, that have sort of organized into gangs, with different spheres of influence. The Snakes' center of power is in the Fire Sector, while the Metalworkers are centered on the Metal district, obviously. But both exert influence outside their districts.

"The snakes have a bit more palpable influence in central because they control the streets, but the metalworkers control the entire console network, so you can't underestimate them.

"The woodsmen seem isolationist, and their sector remains largely undisturbed by either group."

"Different names but some things never change no matter were you are, it seems. There's always people who wants to seek control. It's the gangs what concerns me, those are never a good sign. The city doesn't have any structured military organisation?"

"Military, no. That's a good thing in my opinion. Military means war.

"But a police force is under construction. Two women, Pepper and Valdis, seem to be heading it up. Lots of foreigners and Kedan are involved."

"I suppose this is terrible time to say that I've been part of the military for years? And that my mother was a pilot and my father Infantry and special ops? It is probably a bad moment..."

Poe gave him a bashful smile. "But I understand your views about the military. Ultimately, in my world, being part of this offered me the opportunity to save lives on a much larger scale.

I've talked to Pepper, she's a nice girl. I don't think I've seen the other woman."

"Oh, you misunderstand," she said. "I'm a soldier. But if I've been called in, it means every other avenue has failed. When I first came to Keeliai I was lost, suddenly without purpose. But I've realized that that isn't a bad thing."

"You look very young to be a soldier." He's not one to talk, however, since he joined the New Republic Starfleet as soon as they allowed it.

"I'm not doubting you, it's just...It's sad, as you said, that this really means the rest of options failed us." Poe bits his lips absently, looking a bit awkward. He's been a soldier most of his life and doesn't really here now what to do with himself now that he's in the city. "What do you do here now that you don't have to fight?"

"The same as you, mostly. Anton took me on as a desk greeter. I..."

She wondered if explaining the work she was doing on Mag would undermine the point she'd just made. If it did, there was no reason to hide from it, she supposed.

"I found one of my warframes on the edge of the turtle shell. I've been getting help getting it functional again. It... it's designed for war, obviously. But I... need her."

"I can understand why he did that." She was polite and easy to talk with, at least as far as Poe knew. It was nice and nice was rare nowadays.

Poe wouldn't judge too hardly. Sometimes to ensure peace you need to prepare yourself for war, ironic as it sounds.

"Your warframe it's some sort of ship or weapon? Oh, a she then, sorry. I call my ship that too."
