so long as you come home at the end of the day [July, catchall, open]
Characters: Raine Sage and OPEN
Date: mostly after 9th July, as attitudes will differ markedly before and after
Location: Many places: special mention for apartment in Earth, Healers' Guild in Water
Situation: lots.
Warnings/Rating: hold on to your feels, Raine's misplaced her husband. warnings updated as things change.
A | Healers' Guild | Open
Before the ninth, business is as usual; Raine is brisk and efficient. After the ninth, she makes a level attempt to throw herself into work, at the Guild long hours and busy more often than not. She may be found in her office, sometimes awake, sometimes passed out over her desk with the door ajar; down in Solomon's old laboratory space, sifting through his research; or with patients. She seems more tired, and she smiles less frequently, but she doesn't do her job with any less dedication.
B | park in Earth sector, later in the month | Open
When the familiar surroundings of her apartment get too much, and she's been nudged out of the Guild by coworkers, Raine walks, takes herself out to watch people and keep herself moving. Often she stops in a park, a little ways away from the more traveled areas, and sits to meditate, pale light glowing under her and at her fingertips. Focusing on her magic helps: it won't abide distraction, and she gives all her attention to the clean peace of mana and light, rather than emotion.
As a result, she will be easily startled.
C | Wildcard??? | Open
D | apartment | Sheena
Raine allots herself a few days, not so much to work through the loss as to try to hammer out the nuances of working around it. It may not be the best strategy, but it's what she has. She's not oblivious, all the while, to the food that appears while her remaining roommate disappears, but it takes her some time to actually catch Sheena in the apartment.
On Sheena's day off she taps on the closed door of the room, frowning slightly to herself. It's beginning to seem like Sheena's avoiding her, and if something's wrong with Sheena, Raine would prefer to address it now, before it becomes something worse.

makaricrow. c: other than that, let me know specifically if you need Raine before the ninth for some reason, since her attitude and mood will differ drastically before and after.]

"It seems fitting that some memory should remain," Raine says after a moment, nodding. "That was my thought, as well. As long as the memory of a person remains..."
She can't quite bring herself to finish the thought to its natural conclusion, that so long as she remembers Solomon he isn't completely gone; that if and when she loses her own in returning home, she'll lose him again. Raine shakes her head. "There's a dagger in the head of it," she says instead. "It was originally broken when he died, but when Solomon found the cane here, the Dreaming had repaired it, or perhaps copied his memory of it from an earlier time."
no subject
He knows that too well. He replies like it's a mantra he's learned on his own, which he absolutely has. It's a way to make it hurt less, a way to soften the aching void they leave behind.
"That's pretty cool. The Dreaming can do some impressive stuff."
no subject
But oh, she does miss him.
In a moment she demonstrates the catch of the dagger for Adrian, drawing the blade from the shaft a short ways before returning it. When she's satisfied, she holds the cane out to Adrien, focusing on him. "I think he saw something of himself in you," she says, voice a little uneven. "Certainly I'd judge that he thought of you fondly." Perhaps as family. It's difficult to say for sure now, but the gift is rather a leading one in terms of what it implies.

He hesitates before taking it, as that comment sinks in. That he saw so much in him, him as Adrien...as Chat, as both the fractured pieces of himself that he's created. Solomon knew the secret, and made little attempt to hide the fact he did. For a moment, Adrien feels guilty for not talking about it with him when he had the chance.
"I think fondly of him, too. He's a good man."
A very good man. Better to him than his own father had been in a long, long time. He exhales slowly, taking it. He stares at it for a while, before speaking again.
"I wish I could make it easier for you. Because it's not easy, losing someone that you know is still alive somewhere. People around you talk like they're dead and offer their condolences like you're supposed to grieve them and all you want to do is scream at them that they're being stupid, that you're not about to grieve someone who's just somewhere else," his shoulders slump a little. "I'm just saying, if you ever want someone to talk to about it, I'm always around."
no subject
It's such a slim one. Raine rubs her hand across her eyes, taking one deep breath after another. "At least," she says, rueful, "I know he didn't want to leave." It's a faint comfort, but knowing he tried so hard just to stay a little longer, just to say farewell-- it puts him miles above her mother.
She has to stop talking at that point, lips pressed together almost to the point of pain.
no subject
"No, he didn't. He really loved you. I heard him saying that to himself at your wedding," a soft chuckle. "He seemed pretty surprised by the fact, actually. I know he would never have left you of his own free will."
no subject
She has that much.
"He told me he wasn't sure he knew how, when we began courting," she says aloud, and it's a fond recollection-- it hurts less than the other, right now. "This place... it changed him." Perhaps she did, too, though she hadn't thought of it like that.
no subject
He can understand this place changing people, though. Already, he can feel the solid weight of his father lifting from him. He's loosening up here, letting more of himself show rather than his father's perfect little puppet.
"I think this place changes everyone, in one way or another."
no subject
All the same, it's wonderful not having to deal with half-elf hatred.
She manages a smile, small but genuine, though it's overruled by the lump in her throat before much longer. She's already speaking of him in the past tense, and she doesn't like how easy it is to shift. "Some other time," she says, "I'd like to talk about the good things."
no subject
Freeing, that's the term he'd prefer to use, but he holds it back. He doesn't want people to worry about him. Solomon worried about it, best not have that happen all over again. He offers her a small, gentle smile.
"I'd really like that."
no subject
There's something about the way Adrien says it which makes her think that this is personal for him, as well. It might explain something more of why he and Solomon got on well. Ordinarily it's something Raine would follow up on.
Right now she thinks she would like to be alone.
"It's a better way to remember," she says. "I... should be working. If you have any questions, or if you'd like to talk later..."
It isn't her most subtle stepping-aside.

"I understand. I'll leave you to your work," it helps, the distraction, he gets it. "And if you ever need anything, all you have to do is ask, okay?"

He hopes he looks convincingly confused enough about what 'studies' there might be, while at the same time looking like he doesn't want to pry. It's not Adrien's business, after all.
"I'll talk to you soon, okay?"
no subject
Raine trails off, shakes her head. That's not Adrien's problem. "Yes," she says instead. "Yes, I'll see you soon, Adrien."
