Before the ninth, business is as usual; Raine is brisk and efficient. After the ninth, she makes a level attempt to throw herself into work, at the Guild long hours and busy more often than not. She may be found in her office, sometimes awake, sometimes passed out over her desk with the door ajar; down in Solomon's old laboratory space, sifting through his research; or with patients. She seems more tired, and she smiles less frequently, but she doesn't do her job with any less dedication.

When the familiar surroundings of her apartment get too much, and she's been nudged out of the Guild by coworkers, Raine walks, takes herself out to watch people and keep herself moving. Often she stops in a park, a little ways away from the more traveled areas, and sits to meditate, pale light glowing under her and at her fingertips. Focusing on her magic helps: it won't abide distraction, and she gives all her attention to the clean peace of mana and light, rather than emotion.

As a result, she will be easily startled.

Raine allots herself a few days, not so much to work through the loss as to try to hammer out the nuances of working around it. It may not be the best strategy, but it's what she has. She's not oblivious, all the while, to the food that appears while her remaining roommate disappears, but it takes her some time to actually catch Sheena in the apartment.

On Sheena's day off she taps on the closed door of the room, frowning slightly to herself. It's beginning to seem like Sheena's avoiding her, and if something's wrong with Sheena, Raine would prefer to address it now, before it becomes something worse.

Something to think about, definitely. And even though it would have been AWESOME if she'd come across the item early enough to still talk to the guy...there was no guarantee he would have known anything. Or told them if he did.

"We could do that, yeah. I mean...we already know it reacts to the soul gems, so it'll probably react to everyone wearing them. But we don't know what it might do to someone not wearing one." Like one of the kedan. Although that brought up another subject Zee hadn't thought to ask about: "I didn't know you were teaching kedan magic."

She knew they were capable, of course. Eshai and Eva and Evandau and--to a degree--Milyn. But beyond that, she hadn't seen much evidence that any of the locals were even interested.

"No," Raine agreed. "We don't. I can't think it'd be dangerous, if it's simply a power booster, unless perhaps it reacts with the soul gem...? I don't think it does, but it's difficult to tell."

She tilted her head at Zatanna, taking her focus from the claw finally. "Those who are capable and want to learn healing artes, yes. It's possible. I was surprised, as well, and not all of those I've tested can, but we're trying to collect and pass down healing magics as well as more mundane healing techniques."

"It reacted with mine. And it reacted with Bakura's. And it reacted with...another magic artifact of his." (She didn't want to go into too much detail about the artifact itself, in case he hadn't told Raine about it and it turned out to be something personal.) "Try it again, and you'll see."

Raine's mouth pressed into a flat line at the mention of another artifact. She could guess. But she picked up the fang again, eyes half-closed, paying attention to how it reacted; in another few moments she nodded, setting it down again.

"Yes, I believe I see what you mean." She hesitated, then followed up with, "It reacted with the Ring? In the same manner, or was there some anomaly?"

The Ring was important, but she did not completely trust it.

"...okay, so you do know about that." She heaved an inaudible sigh of relief. It was always so much easier to have a conversation when she didn't have to worry. "And yeah, I guess. It glowed under his shirt. And I'm not sure if he felt the same thing or not, since our...abilities are different, but I know I definitely got an extra rush of mystical energy when I held it. Like it was boosting my magic."

"I know about the Ring, yes." Raine looked troubled, to say the least. "I'll have to speak to Bakura about that myself. In any case, for me, it simply feels like an amplifier-- as though, through it, I could handle more mana than usual. There are similar items in my world, though only with regards to that property. Nothing quite like this one."

The troubled look...troubled her some, though she didn't know why. Either Raine knew a lot more about Bakura's artifact, or she was worried about the one Zee had brought her.

"Same. I think. I mean, I've heard about magic amulets that can boost power. Heck, there are amulets than can give someone without any powers the ability to do magic. Which I highly don't recommend, by the way. But most of them were only ever stories my dad told me about. I'd never seen one like this before until now."

It was a little of both, in truth, but the Ring was Raine's primary concern.

"There have been items like that here," she noted. "A good friend of mine -- Jacob Kane? -- found a piece of jewelry that enabled him to heal, and I believe Akito learned waterbending in a similar way. Those items didn't have precedent, but appeared from the Dreaming nevertheless. To my knowledge nothing that's purely an amplifier, however." For every situation she could think of, the artefact in front of her proved an exception or anomaly.

"...didi they keep those abilities with or without the items?"

Raine shook her head. "Only if the jewelry was worn. Without it, the ability disappeared. I take it that's not the case with the items you're thinking of?"

"Actually, it kind of is. If we're thinking there's a chance this thing came from Dreaming, too."

She hadn't ruled out the possibility. Yet.

"It's one of the more probable possible origins, yes. Although I don't currently have a way to test for that." Raine was frowning absently at it again before she stopped herself, rubbing her eyes for a moment and focusing on Zatanna. "Do you plan to conduct more experiments with it, or simply keep it somewhere safe?"

"I didn't have any immediate experiments in mind, no." She shook her head. "Not until I could get more information on what those experiments might do to it. That's why I've been going around, asking questions. Or maybe just listening in here and there, just in case."

"Just listening in?" Raine asked, a little dryly, with her eyebrows raised. She wasn't judging, only wondering where, exactly, Zatanna might have been listening in for relevant information.

"In any case, if you learn any more about it, I'd appreciate being kept informed. This is unusual enough that it seems prudent to keep track of it, and I'll have some ideas for experiments if you do decide to study it in greater detail." She'd love the distraction, honestly.

"No. I did say I was asking questions sometimes too, didn't I?" She corrected, in that slightly-too-innocent tone of hers.

"If I didn't plan on keeping you in the loop, I wouldn't have brought it here in the first place. And vice versa, I assume? You'll stop by if you happen to hear anything relevant?"

Raine gave Zatanna a mildly suspicious look, but it really wasn't worth the effort to pursue. Zatanna was gathering information, and that was enough. "That's fair," she said, nodding, and, "Yes, if I hear anything I'll let you know. This could be important."

"Thanks. I appreciate it."

With that, she gathered her things and turned to leave.

"Until next major development in the case?"

"Until then," Raine agreed, and turned her attention back to what she'd been working on in the first place. It was good to have the distractions.
