1. Central (Late April)

It was Spring. The weather was nice. And Conan didn't have any mysteries to work on.

Sounds like the perfect day for soccer.

He can be found in Central, practicing trick soccer kicks in a park.




2. The apartment (Not 221B)

He shouldn't have been surprised. He'd known there was a chance. Ran hadn't had a soulgem, after all.

But somehow that didn't make it hurt any less. Ran was gone. Takagi was gone.

And now Peridot and John were gone as well. The apartment seemed very quiet these days.

Conan was there in the mornings and evenings, but spent much of his days avoiding the place.


3. Various (Early April)
It might have been raining for the last few days, but Conan wasn't about to let a little drizzle keep him from going out. He retrieves his skateboard, and heads out, making stops at the library and the KPD and the university.

Six? He can't be serious. She really hopes he isn't serious! "You can't be serious." She's just going to hold the ball for a moment and stare at him. She'd put a tracker on him, if he were part of the pack.

Six?! She wants to shake whatever adult is in charge of him. Obviously the last time hadn't been Sherlock's fault, but the child needed a minder. Especially if he's going to get caught like that.

"I just end up in the wrong place a lot of times."

She raises her eyebrows at him and uses her heel to kick the ball back at him. That's not ending up in the wrong place, that's purposefully finding trouble. Just like the boys in the pack, but at least they had each other to get out of, and into, trouble with.

"You should find yourself a group then." She says. Group, pack, same thing.

He scoops the ball up with the back of his heel and balances it on top of his other foot.

"Why would I need a group?"

"To help you stay out of such trouble." And to help get him into it, but he seems to be doing just fine on his own. "And to find help if you get in over your head." Which, obviously he's been doing.

"I'm doing fine on my own."

Apart from that one incident that she'd helped out with. And that time when he got a concussion during the storm.

"No one is an island." Brigid advises. She isn't going to mention that one time when she had to get him out, or the fact that he's living with Sherlock Holmes of all people - and she'd never seen him as particularly paternal.

"Even adults need friends."

"Are you sure about that?"

Conan had opinions about most of the adults he knew.

"That adults need friends too?" She asks, raising an eyebrow at him. "Yes." She shrugs. "You can get by sometimes, but there's always a need to connect with someone else." Eventually. She's good at making friends. "Surely you can't like being alone all the time?"

"There aren't any other kids my age among the foreigners. I've gotten used to being alone here."

Not that he would have reached out even if there had been some. Shinichi had spent his childhood ignoring all of his classmates in favor of his books. Even as Conan, he'd never understood how he'd been selected as a friend by the detective boys.

She catches the ball with her foot. "Why don't you try amongst the kedan?" She can't imagine being alone. After all, she's always been surrounded by Pack.

"I don't go to school here," he points out. "And I'm not involved in any other of the other activities where you would normally meet other kids. It seems silly to go out just to meet kedan kids because they're kids."

[bostonhowler]

"Why don't you try to go to school here?" She asks, honestly curious. It wouldn't be a bother for him, she doesn't think. "Or get involved in kid-like activities, as it were?" She's sure he could make more friends that way.

"Because its boring."

And no one here had ever tried to make him attend.

That gets a rise of the eyebrows at of her. School might be boring, but there is a purpose to attending. She'd never seen the point of math, but people had assured her that it served a purpose.

"Boring it might be." She agrees. "But do you realize, you'd probably be the only one able to read kedanese?"

"I already know how to read it. And I know I'm not the only one."

Mostly because he'd been helping Sherlock with translations for the last few months.

[bostonhowler]

"Oh really?" Brigid is a bit surprised at that. She hasn't had time to learn kedanese around here. Too busy doing everything else. "Well, it would still do you good to go to school. Perhaps find more people to play soccer with."

"I'd rather pass on that. I can learn everything I need at home or the library. And I'm fine practicing soccer on my own."

He regarded the idea of spending more of his life in the local equivalent of elementary school with mild horror.

[bostonhowler]

"Doesn't that get lonely?" Brigid has to ask. Even if she'd wanted to study in such a way, there'd been the Pack around. And that meant she was never alone, never without some friend close to her.

"Not really. Why would it?"

He'd spent his first childhood doing exactly that, and he'd turned out just fine.

According to his opinion, anyway.

[bostonhowler]

"Because, again, people need people." She kicks the ball toward him. "But I'm not going to change your mind, am I?" Brigid knows a lost cause when she sees it. But she's just as stubborn as Conan.

"Unlikely." At least he was honest?

[bostonhowler]

"Well, in that case." She kicks the ball back to him. "If you ever want to get together a soccer game, stop by the shelter. I'm sure that the kedan living there would rather play than work, at least some of the time."

"Mmm, I will! I'll remember that."

But don't be surprised if he never shows up.

"I hope to see you there, Conan." She says, picking up her bag again. "Have a good day."
