Oh, you are from the twentieth century! [Temeraire leans forward despite himself, the spice momentarily forgotten. It is so difficult to tell when and where one comes from here; the foreigners do not always dress the same way they might at home.] There seem to be a great many of you here, if the network is any indication--

[A pause as he remembers himself, and he inclines his head carefully.] Oh, I am sorry, I have quite forgotten to introduce myself. My name is Temeraire; and you are?

[Dorian doesn't answer the first. There's little good in correcting people's assumptions about when and where he is from. They work it out eventually, or they don't, and that's the end of it. A soft laugh escapes him at Temeraire's apology.]

Dorian Gray, and a pleasure to meet you. I'm afraid I didn't really catch what century you said you were from?

The pleasure is mine, Mr Gray. I am from the nineteenth myself--it was 1807, before I arrived.

[It is still a little strange to say it, and a little awe-inspiring to hear of all the changes in everyone else's worlds.]

[He laughs a little.] Long, long before I was born. But . . . when did you have the opportunity to learn Chinese cooking? Unless I am mistaken, you seem to be a countryman.

Oh, I have done a great deal of traveling myself; it is true I was largely raised in Britain, but I am Chinese by blood, and my captain and I went there some time ago, to pay our respects to the Emperor. [Which is really as succinct an explanation as he can come up with on such short notice.]

In any case, my cook is Chinese, as well, and I have learned a great deal by watching him--although I am still learning how to do it for myself, now that I have a kitchen of my own.
