Situation: Toby is just chillin' like a villain in a cafe, because that is a thing to do.

[Toby is sitting at a table in a cafe, flipping through a well worn copy of Wordsworth's Poems, In Two Volumes. He's also sporting a mild sunburn, emphasis on mild considering how severe sunburns can be for him. Either way he's seeming pretty relaxed more or less and amicable and friendly enough when the server comes to take his order. So bother him at your leisure, or not, whatever floats your boat.]

I would not think that the Furnace, which you call the 'Sun', would produce such strong effects merely from walking under its light without proper clouds.

You would be surprised at what that furnace can do given the right target. It can even be downright deadly for some.

Oh yeah, yeah. You've got cancer for starters, heat stroke, eye damage, and I'm sure there's other things out there, too.

Then I will be watchful when about my business in the future.

It's usually only overexposure. I'm sure you'll be fine. So what part of the world does your Furnace shine on, when you're not stranded on giant turtle that is?

Why, the daylight half. It is merely that the Empire is protected by the Enclouding, such that only the peaks of mountains are above.

I've come across them, yeah.

I am told in the East, and have observed on this turtle, that they are not always present, or occur in isolation. That is not the case in the Empire.

Plus the Enclouding is a pleasing shade of orange, which I have observed only in the evening clouds here.

Perpetual shade then? No wonder you haven't had to worry about sun damage.

In that case, maybe if we're lucky we'll find a way to your home and I'll avoid future burning.
