Satellite Crash Event

Crash Landing | Salvage Party | Shocking Spectres

Questions | Keeliai | ARSHEPHELIOS

Salvage is sweet, but not all is well on board the ARSHEPHELIOS cluster. The seamless cylinders salvaged from debris and the cluster, now being frequently traded, turn out to be pods the first time one is penetrated or cracked open. Each breached pod releases a flood of energy-based apparitions hellbent on world domination -- or, more accurately, person domination (and it's not the fun kind).

These apparitions -- spectres, if you will -- are driven by a need to protect the technology of the satellite cluster that their pods are associated with. They will stop at nothing to see this through. Each is immune to physical attacks, but seem to be injured or dissipated entirely by things like electrical shock or other energy-based projections. If people touch them, there is also a brief window of vulnerability, but it acts also like a door that swings both way. Through contact, these spectres can and will invade one's psyche, take over their body and cause them to attack friend or foe alike! Should the possessed body be subjected to sufficient electrical shock, the possession should fade. Strong natural will can also drive the spectres out, but it is no walk in the park to do so. Possession is not the only tool in the arsenal, for these spectres use electricity as their main offensive weapon. They'll leave deep-tissue burns on anyone they fight, and show no degree of fatigue after constant use of it.

Ten thousand of these creatures will be freed from pods, resulting in a veritable flood of Keeliai, the turtleside, and the satellite cluster. With such a driven enemy, it comes down to killing or being killed.

Meanwhile, those taking shelter indoors may notice that the spectres will get into the biomechanical functions of Keeliai. Consoles will be malfunctioning during this time, with lines of mysterious code and strange, ghostly images. One might hear people screaming for help or hours of patchy radio static.

[-- he is about to argue that point when the ring starts kicking up a fuss, and Jim just sort of. s t a r e s at it.]

Oh my god, it does that?

Usually telepathically. [He shakes his arm like he's trying to get something off it.] It's been going at me for the past couple of minutes. [To the ring:] Stop.

LANTERN RAYNER, REPORT TO ASSIGNED PHYSICIAN. THIS IS YOUR FINAL WARNING.

[Runs a hand through his hair.]

All right, all right, tell Soranik I'm on my way.

[OFFICIALLY WORSE THAN BONES.

But he sobers after a moment.]

Listen. This thing-- [he waves a little, towards his head. 'Reading you'.] I can't shut it off.

[I'm not wired to, and I won't apologize. It's a necessary, an integral part of being a captain. Understanding the people around him, what they have to offer, what they're capable of, it's important.

He thinks about giving Kyle another considering look, but he stops himself. That might invalidate what he's about to say. Maybe it's the injuries (he knows he's exhibiting at least some signs of shock from those burns) or maybe it's the sleep deprivation, but he counters Kyle's honesty with some of his own.]

And I was pushing you. But it's because I recognize sometimes that's the only way to help guys like us. If you don't want the help, I'll back off.

[But it's in his nature. At the end of the day, he cares about other people, and he can't not.]

[Kyle nods in understanding.]

I get it, I do it as well; I have to.

[He's a commander too. He's perhaps not as conscious about it happening as Jim is, but it's still a valuable skill, and Kyle trusts his instincts, acts on them. It's what makes him such a good Lantern.]

Uhm --[how did he even deal with people outside his inner circle doing this?] thanks. I appreciate it, I really do, but I'm not ready. And there's one thing guys like us do know better than anyone, it's how to push people away.

[Which is what I was doing to you.

Kyle bites his lip, glances briefly at the ground before he meets Jim's eyes.]

You're not a rookie, or an idiot. You have that rank for a reason, and I didn't respect that. You have every right to break my face when this is all over.

[If there's one thing he knows, it's having to prove yourself to people, and he swore he wouldn't do to anyone what people did to him. So much for that promise.]

[He won't apologize. Done is done, and the best apologies, in his opinion, are the ones that come in the form of an unrepeated action. They always do speak louder than words.]

So I won't push.

[That much, at least, is a promise.

This whole thing's like looking in a mirror. Or-- well, listening to one. A slightly more forthcoming one. Jim's never been good at the share and care aspect of conversation.]

Man, you said it yourself. You don't know me.

[He's had to prove himself to so many people who think he's just his daddy's legacy it's sort of rote by now. And as much as it bothers him sometimes, it's nothing he hasn't faced down before. Kyle had (has?) no real reason to believe he's as good as he says he is, as good as he acts like he is. So Jim'll just prove it, and problem solved.

Then he's grinning, just a bit.]

And honestly? I wouldn't go for the face. Way too pretty.

[Kyle's brow furrows, he moves like he's listening to something in the wind. He's always been a man of words and action, so at least, when they look at his record, they'll say he went for the diplomatic option first. It also came from years of having to talk his way out of a sticky situation.]

No, I don't, [pause] and that means I don't know when I'm being patronising towards you. I'm saying - if I pull that bullshit, you tell me straight up to cut it out.

[You have nothing to prove.]

[He cocks his head to one side.]

Deal. For the record, I know you let me win.

[A brief pause.]

It's what I'd have done.

[A shrug, and a friendly smile. Jim's the first one to catch on to it.]

Subtlety's my middle name. [Beat.] Need a lift? I'm headed back to Earth Sector.

[personal profile] jirk 2013-05-26 11:59 am (UTC)(link)
[His pride wants him to say no. His aches and pains and burns and bruises, on the other hand, have another opinion entirely.]

Yeah. I'd appreciate it.

[Kyle moves in front of him, and concentrates on a pair of matching hovercars. He's not in the mood for a race, but he won't say no to one. He gestures to Jim to hop in, and his shoulder aches: the uniform's torn a bit more. Kyle reaches to brush it lightly. Now, he's sure it's been seen.

Quietly:]
Prisoner of war. Just before I got here.

[Because he senses that there'll be a question, and it's honesty hour with them anyway.]

[He doesn't quite leap into the car, but he stops, with one hand braced on the door frame as he looks over at Kyle. His hand flexes.]

I was dropped into an arena and forced to fight my drugged out best friend to what would have been the death if not for the very timely intervention of my CMO.

[No pity, but commiseration.]

We must be nuts to do what we do.

[Jim shakes his head.]

Somebody has to. Might as well be us.

[He doesn't believe in no-win scenarios.]
imaginate: ([ion] no problemo)

[He snorts softly in amusement, and the hovercars lift off, heading towards Earth. He still aches, but he's lighter, now.]
