Satellite Crash Event

Crash Landing | Salvage Party | Shocking Spectres

Questions | Keeliai | ARSHEPHELIOS

Salvage is sweet, but not all is well on board the ARSHEPHELIOS cluster. The seamless cylinders salvaged from debris and the cluster, now being frequently traded, turn out to be pods the first time one is penetrated or cracked open. Each breached pod releases a flood of energy-based apparitions hellbent on world domination -- or, more accurately, person domination (and it's not the fun kind).

These apparitions -- spectres, if you will -- are driven by a need to protect the technology of the satellite cluster that their pods are associated with. They will stop at nothing to see this through. Each is immune to physical attacks, but seem to be injured or dissipated entirely by things like electrical shock or other energy-based projections. If people touch them, there is also a brief window of vulnerability, but it acts also like a door that swings both way. Through contact, these spectres can and will invade one's psyche, take over their body and cause them to attack friend or foe alike! Should the possessed body be subjected to sufficient electrical shock, the possession should fade. Strong natural will can also drive the spectres out, but it is no walk in the park to do so. Possession is not the only tool in the arsenal, for these spectres use electricity as their main offensive weapon. They'll leave deep-tissue burns on anyone they fight, and show no degree of fatigue after constant use of it.

Ten thousand of these creatures will be freed from pods, resulting in a veritable flood of Keeliai, the turtleside, and the satellite cluster. With such a driven enemy, it comes down to killing or being killed.

Meanwhile, those taking shelter indoors may notice that the spectres will get into the biomechanical functions of Keeliai. Consoles will be malfunctioning during this time, with lines of mysterious code and strange, ghostly images. One might hear people screaming for help or hours of patchy radio static.

[Finnick's been a passenger in his mind for who knows how long now. He fades in, out, in again. It doesn't matter. He's caged in, trapped.

But something stirs in him when Katniss runs into him, urging him to come with her. Now he screams, and maybe a bit of that strangled sound bubbles up in his throat. He wants her to run, he wants her to kill him, he wants his body back.

His hand thrusts out, a static charge running through his fingers as he leaps at the girl on fire, electrocuting her.]

[The strangled sound throws her; it's instinct to draw away from him, even if she doesn't know what's wrong. But she's not fast enough. Trust has her guard down. He leaps at her and before she has time to do everything except should something that sounds like his name, they go down. The slams out of her body as they hit the ground, making it hard for her to cry out as electricity sears through her.

It hurts, but Katniss has been on fire and this is nothing compared to that white agony. Her body thrashes, nails raking over his skin as she tries to find purchase, shoving and kicking at him to get him off her, to get him to stop.]
Finnick. [Of course he couldn't fight the thing off. It probably crawled in through his tear ducts] Finnick, get off me.

[Finnick doesn't even feel the scratching, and he gets the distinct feeling that his hijacker doesn't really care about pain. His body struggles with Katniss, hand moving to wrap around her neck, that electrical current still pulsing through him.

There's another strangled yell, something that almost, almost sounds like her name. Run, kill me, I'm sorry. That's what Finnick wants to tell her.]

[Katniss bites down on the hand before it can reach her throat, hard enough to draw blood. It hurts, it hurts, but she's survived too much to let this kill her. Finnick is bigger than her, stronger than her, but Katniss is more desperate.

Her body act without thought, and she honestly has no idea how she manages to do it, but she throws him off her. And that's how she knows it's not Finnick, because she thinks that if it was, she'd be dead already. He's too efficient for any other outcome.

Katniss scrambles for her bow and lurches to her feat, old instinct forcing her to run despite the pain. You can do all kinds of things when you're determined to live, she's found, and her hands are steady as she sets an arrow to the string of her bow, still stepping backwards as she aims it at whatever's in Finnick's body.]
I'll do it. You know I will.

[She won't, but she's hoping that the spectre doesn't know that.]

[The spectre tugs Finnick's hand away fast, a faint rippling of pain moving through his body as the blood drips slowly. It's not a large wound, but it throbs. Good girl, Katniss. Keep it up.

He isn't in control of himself, and the spectre still doesn't understand his body, the way he moves, or maybe it's just that it doesn't really have access to Finnick's memories of training, of all the ways that he can hurt a person. Kill them. He's thankful for that, because the idea of killing Katniss would have made him feel sick if he wasn't trapped where he was.

Finnick climbs back to his feet before Katniss does, but the spectre is smart enough to hold still - for the moment - as the arrow is aimed at him.]

Katniss.

[His body jerks toward her, stops, jerks again.]

[She keeps backing up, taking slow and steady steps, feeling with her feet to make sure she's not going to trip over any rubble. She can't afford to end up on the ground again.

A fine tremor runs through her hand when he manages to say her name, but she clamps down on it, makes it stop. She'll break down later, when she's out of this.]
Snap out of it, Finnick. Think about Annie. Think about the things you fought for back home. Think about - think about lizards, I don't care, just don't make me do this.

[Katniss' expression has twisted, distress and pain and exhaustion evident on her face. She knows she won't shoot to kill, but she doesn't want to have to shoot him at all.

She will if she has to, though. Just another name on the list of sacrifices made to keep Katniss alive.]
Please.

[Annie isn't here.

He watches her back away from him, body struggling to follow, to attack, to stop her.

Annie isn't here.

There's a feeling of despair that takes him over, pushing his presence back further into the corner where he's been exiled.

Annie isn't here.

The mutts took his head, and there was the rotting stink of flesh and blood on their breath, teeth scraping into his skin, and Annie isn't here, Katniss. Annie isn't here, she can't save him. She isn't here, and he can't go back to her because fighting has killed him. He's dead, and he's not coming back.

The spectre takes control again, moving with speed and better control of the stolen body as he goes for the girl with the bow and arrow.]

[Well that has pretty much the opposite effect of what Katniss wanted, and for a moment Katniss curses internally, backing up faster as the spectre starts to move again. Finnick is an idiot, and when this is all over, she's going to make sure he knows it.

Right now, has to make sure there is an after. One that neither of them has to regret. Taking note of the window and the speed Finnick's body is moving, Katniss sucks in a breath and reorients her bow.

He doesn't get another warning. There's a soft twang of her bowstring, a sick thud as the arrow hits her target, a meaty part of his leg with no major blood vessels.

Katniss doesn't wait for a reaction. She runs.]

[The arrow sinks into his leg, and distantly - how do you feel distance - Finnick feels the pain, as though it's muted. His body stumbles, although the spectre doesn't give any indication of the pain throbbing in his leg. He simply stumbles and stares at the arrow sticking out from his leg.

The girl gets away, and he is left to tug the distraction out of his thigh. There's blood, but not a lot.

He sinks to his knees and stares out after the lost prey.]
