Event | Landfall | Bresilyk | Markutte

OOC Post | Approved Items | Special Gifts
Aihsohlow | Phorezton | Markutte | Countryside
The commerce town of the tried. Temperatures within the dome are kept at a lofty 18C (62F) year round and the population of Markutte dresses less in furs and more in linens obtained through trade. Their long hair is frequently shorn short in the current fashion and they are, on the whole, less hardy than their kin in Phorezton and Aihsohlow, but even more friendly as they are currently in the throes of the Harvest Haul, a festival that concludes their rare growing seasons and agricultural bounties.
Trade. That's the foundation of Markutte and there are three town squares that are home to transient stalls and merchandise from the country and all surviving areas of Konryu. Many kedan have made their way here and occupy the occasional stall space, selling their wares and exchanging gifts with the citizens as they grasp the nature of the festival underway. Once again, visitors that make the trek here are expected to donate a gift that will be regifted at random, earning access and a stamp of their tin visa that resembles the oblong crystal coin used as currency in this realm.
Police are on the lookout for financial crimes here and will demand visas of any they suspect to be committed fraud, short-selling merchants, or thieving in any way, shape, or form. There are three vistas, one in each market square, upon which heralds stand and announce the crimes and punishments noted of the previous day. Minor theft is common and the punishment is a brand upon the criminal's neck; major theft results in a loss of a finger for each item stolen; fraud here is punishable by death, but only twice will there be an announcement of an execution during the landfall.
The auctions here are quite lively and characters can expect a minor bidding war to obtain their items, but each item is in pristine condition and provided to them wrapped within a thin set of furs as a thanks for their purchase.

closed to MCU Tony
Booting up the laptop didn't bring him any answers. If anything, the encrypted files brought him more questions than answers. He glanced around the room and noticed Tony nearby. He knew that Tony was head of Stark Enterprises, and that was a pretty tech-heavy company... but he also knew that there was more than one of them, and frankly he wasn't sure if it as the one he had met or not.
Oh well, only one way to find out.] Hey Tony, you think you can help me out with something?
no subject
Or maybe they’re both from the same place and he’s just being recognized because he is who he is. That’s the trouble with playing around with interdimensional quantum mechanics: the possibilities really can be endless.
Not too terribly perturbed by his lack of ability to provide a name to the face, Tony nods and makes his way over, looking from the guy to the laptop and back again. ]
Sure. What’s up?

no subject
You bet. It's been a while since I got to play amateur detective. It'll be fun.
[ He nods toward the computer. ]
You interested in this kind of thing? I can show you how it's done.
no subject
[Offers him the laptop.]
Sure! [Who was he to say no to learning a new skill?]
no subject
[ It's his best fussy British guy impression that sounds more like he's trying to imitate JARVIS than anything else.
Taking the laptop, angles it so that they can both see it. It's been quite a while since Tony's actually taught anyone anything and he has to admit he's almost looking forward to the opportunity. He even remembers to slow down his typing speed so that the movements of his fingers, and the command lines he inputs, can be seen. ]
Okay, so first we get behind the operating system like this. [ He enters a few strings of code, then launches into a simplified version of why he's choosing these commands and how to modulate them depending on the type of computer being worked on. ] So far so good?
no subject
[Sorry, nerd thing. Mark looks over Tony's shoulder as he attempts to explain things. He was good with computers, but no that good, so finds himself asking questions at points where he gets confused.]
See here I thought we'd be sitting around trying to figure out the password all day....
no subject
[ He's a nerd too. He can't help it. And with his lifetime of messing around with computers, it's probably not too hard to imagine it. ]
Really? [ He glances back at him, eyebrow raised, before returning to his work. ] Passwords are for people who don't speak the language. Speak the language, they become obsolete. Voilà.
[ With a flourish, he gestures toward the computer. ]
And we're in.
no subject
Except the part about them showing up. I mean, is the Emperor pulling in a lot of old time actors? [Stranger things have happened, he supposed.]
Really. I mean, I know how to use a computer, but... not like this. [Still, watching Tony closely because this is really interesting stuff.]
Okay, so how can we figure out whose it is, if anyones?
no subject
[ Not that he didn't like Gran Turino. He's just hoping for some badassness if they've got to be inundated with actors. ]
Well, we could do it the hard way. Piece together old data. Real forensic computer nerd stuff. Or...
[ He spins it around so Mark can see it, an email program maximized on the screen. ]
We can just snoop around in their email.
no subject
[Mimics waving a walker at Tony.]
No wonder you make the big bucks. I never would have thought to do that. And that's not sarcasm, dude. [Leans in to see the screen better.] So? Whose laptop is this?
no subject
Well, I'm thinking that this is...
[ He squints at the screen, again reading over the email he's just pulled up. He doesn't know her that well and certainly isn't in a position to be overly judgmental, but the contents of the email are a little disturbing, even to him. ]
It's a girl named Hayley. Look.
[ He points to her name, still warily eyeing the email. ]
no subject
no subject
Must be the cosmic equivalent of Smith. Yeah. That Hayley.
[ He taps the screen. ]
Looks like this belongs to her.
no subject
Grayson must be the cosmic equivalent of Jones, then, because I'm the other, other Grayson.
[Opens his mouth to say something, but then gets past "My name is Hayley Stark" and whatever it was dies in his throat, and so he just sort of stands there, slack jawed over what he was reading.]
no subject
[ It's a mutter under his breath as he scans over the email again. The content hasn't changed no matter how many times he reads it, and he can only stomach that a few times. ]
You know her? Friends with her? Maybe you should be the one to return this.
no subject
[Looks between the e-mail and Tony, still unable to get anything coherent out. Finally:] And say what? That she was about to be taken advantage of?!
no subject
Or “that guy’s a douchebag” support group.
[ It’s suddenly easier to talk about other selves than it is the contents of the email. ]
I don’t know, but it’s got to be better coming from you than me. I have this thing. With tact. Not really my strong suit.
no subject
[]Yes, definitely. Because... how do you talk about that e-mail?[]
Bu aren't you an adult? Isn't that what adults do?
no subject
This, he knows without having to go through the trouble of experiencing, is one of those things no one wants him to handle. Including himself. ]
Do you know any other adults? [ It's a vain hope, but goddamn it, it's supposed to spring eternal. ] Like... any other adults?
no subject
no subject
Here would be more helpful than somewhere else. You know, since we're here, this — [ He gestures to the computer. ] — is here, and its owner's here. I mean, unless you can phone a friend interdimensionally and get them to cough up some tactful advice.
no subject
And dude, if I had one of those, I wouldn't still be here. At least not full time, anyway.
no subject
How about a compromise? I pay you, literally, to deliver this thing to her because I bought it, poked around in it, saw who it belonged to, but I'm busy and don't have time to play UPS.
