open | event | All Shook Up!
Characters: Teams Alpha, Beta, and Charlie; also, everyone!
Date: February 17th (through 28th)
Location: Tu Vishan's shell damaged areas (multiple locations), sewers
Situation: There are a number of damaged sections of Tu Vishan's shell and the kedan are working at repairs and, where the turtle's flesh itself has been damaged, healing. There are many convoluted sewer passages now open that Foreigners technically could access, if they can make it past the police that have been stationed around each exposed area.
Warnings/Rating: Medical examinations, blood & gore references, sewage; to be updated as needed.
Exposed Areas
The damages sustained during the dive event are not excessive in number, but are plentiful enough to require work groups of kedan to be deployed in a twenty-four/seven repair schedule. They are signed into each area through one of Evandau's direct reports and their numbers are counted throughout the day to enforce strict controls over those that have access to Tu Vishan, their most precious resource.
Those making it past the checkpoints or sneaking through gaps in the sentries find that the Emperor did not lie about the damages done. There are scars near each damaged bit of shell that shift into spider webbed stress lines and end with the jagged edging of broken shell. Kedan workers are busy trying to clear away broken shell and install metal-and-wood framing that will hold these pieces back in place when they are done.
Beneath the surface, some are working at dams and blockages in what appears to be an ancient sewer system. The walls are smooth and indicative of architecture done in concert with the natural growth of the turtle. Lanterns provide some pinpoints of light where dark mosses have grown over the bioluminescent shell itself, but the further one goes from the work sites, the more one must rely upon the natural lighting of the shell in order to proceed.
At the core of each operation are the best healers that the kedan population has to offer. They can be seen tending torn and blooded flesh of a momentous scale, mending the damages done directly to the turtle to the best measure that they can. These areas are the most stringently guarded, for Tu Vishan is most vulnerable beneath the armoured layer of its shell.
Sewage meets most that enter the tunnels rather than skulking about the sites, with an unpleasant smell lingering in the nose and mouth the longer that one stays there -- oh, and in the clothes, which may make a stealthy exit more difficult if one is not downwind. The tunnels twist and turn aplenty, crossing one another with a design more evolutionary than engineered. Those that wander in are at risk of becoming lost beneath the surface, with only a few doors and small closet-like rooms to be found where tools were stored once upon a time.
Be wary, Foreigners! There are many a kedan patrolling these areas and they will give chase in an unauthorised party is found. Evandau briefed a number of the teams himself, advising that Foreigners are all considered unauthorised. Parties subject to arrest are to be brought to the surface and handed over to either the police or, once it's in place, Raylan's civilian team for eventual escort to the palace prison.
OOC: Thread headers (and starters for the teams) are provided in the comments area of this post!

Man. He hadn't thought it was this extensive. He gets that awful taste in his teeth, like he just bit down on metal, as he crawls silently past the guards along the shadows of the worksite. Sympathy pains or something, that's what that taste reminds him of.
He can see from here the cracks and gouges in the shell, wonders if having this many people with their germy hands all over the open wounds is causing any infections. Shell rot is the worst.]
Donnie! [he hisses over his shoulder.] Hurry up!
no subject
[Still, Don takes a moment to jerk away from where he'd paused to examine the sheer breadth of the wounds. He'd been gritting his teeth without realizing it and shakes himself off, hurrying after Raph.]
Shh!
[He keeps his voice quiet. There was a reason they had all worked out a complex system of hand signs, but there were some things even Leo and Mikey couldn't prepare for.]
You said there were sewers down there?
[Infection, at the least. He'd be surprised if there wasn't already, and resists the urge to rub his shoulder - the closest to his own shell he can reach. How is a turtle supposed to heal like this, people poking at them, the wounds so open people could - ugh - people could crawl into them, surrounded by ocean water and constant sun?]
no subject
That's what the guy said.
[And sure, he's supposed to be standing guard making sure people don't do exactly what he's doing right now, but since when is Raph law enforcement? He needs to see what's going on for himself.]
no subject
[Don glares when Raph punches him, but peers back the way they came without comment while Raph looks forward, checking corners and listening for footsteps or voices. It's automatic to keep paranoid track of their blind spots now, a habit gained the way only the regular sneaking around in places where everyone wants to kill them could, and Don was always uneasier than most.]
[He takes a mental breath and shoves the problem of the holes - and the part of his brain churning out everything he'd ever learned about turtles and their shells - as far back as he could. Raph is right, anyway. It's a bit too dangerous to talk here. ]
[Don shifts until he bumps lightly against his brother. Clear behind. He'd be ready to move when Raph did.]
no subject
He never tries to stop and think.
Raphael glances up at the center of activity; there's a framework of supports that hold up the impressive lighting system. The whole site is very well-lit, which makes sense considering its location and the nature of the work required. There's even still chunks of shell stuck into Tu Vishan's flesh, the poor guy. Looking at it makes Raph feel sick, so he turns his attention elsewhere.
Unfortunately, because of all the patrols and lighting, there's few places they can go. There's no way they won't be seen if they try to get closer to that hole; too many people, not enough shadows. No chance of just blending in either, not even here.
...but the lighting...
The structures arc over the entire worksite; if they can get up there, anybody looking up from below will be too blinded by the lights to see them. Also, because the light is concentrated downward, the night will conceal them from anyone looking far away (provided they don't have night vision or whatever else).
Raph nudges Don and nods up toward the lighting structures, whispering.]
Will those hold our weight?
no subject
[...At least until Don can't stand you being in charge anymore, but that might require someone being dead.]
[He glances around his brother and frowns at the structures. They looked stable for what they needed to do, but were obviously temporary. How they would handle supporting additional weight - especially the two of them? Don wasn't sure. Maybe one, but that could destabilize the entire thing for the other-]
[Don glances at where they're secured, and frowns.]
Maybe, if we move fast and stay as far from the center as we can. I mean it, do not linger.
...I'd recommend one at a time. I don't want to shake them up too much if we can help it.
no subject
[Don for being the smart guy you are as dumb as a bag of rocks sometimes. Raph shoves Don back against the wall as he scoots forward onto his toes.]
Fine. I'll go first.
no subject
Just be careful. A lot of people could get hurt if those things fall. At least stick to the supports. It might not give the best view, but it should be more stable.
no subject
[Raph ducks out before Don can REALLY get his sass on, crawling over to the nearest wide-bottomed support pillar; he keeps an eye on the patrols before jumping and digging a sai into it for a handhold, and then using it as a foothold. Okay, so not being so careful, so what? He needs to get up here. Hopefully if Donnie sees anything he'll let Raph know somehow. Whistle, throw a rock, whatever.]
no subject
[He also palms a couple of the rocks from his belt, the ones he'd gathered before coming. It was embarrassing, sure, but he didn't have any other projectile weapons yet and he hadn't- Well, he hadn't been sure he'd find anything here that he'd be willing to actually pick up.
(He's forcibly ignoring the bits of shell scattered about.)
Now that he's alone, he can nearly hear his heart beating a cacophony in his ears.
At the very least the rocks could be used for a distraction in a pinch or...
Or for throwing at Raph's stupid head when Don needs to get him moving faster. Which he does, hissing silently between his teeth when he notices one worker briefly swing a little too close to comfort to where Raph's climbing. Gogogo.
That was not what he meant by being careful.]
no subject
The pebble dings off his shell and Raphael turns to snarl, but spots the guard and decides to spend his energy climbing as quickly and quietly as he can until he can crouch on the top of the post. It only wobbles just a bit; hopefully nobody's noticed.
While this isn't close enough to see much, Raphael can definitely see a lot more than he could on the ground. Kedan are carefully extracting large chips of shell from Tu Vishan's flesh and setting them aside nearby. There's something resembling framework over some of the smaller holes, but still there's a large, gaping entrance that's full of blood and ruined flesh, and maybe Raph is just imagining things but he thinks he can smell the rot and sewage. Ugh.
He covers his mouth as he gags.]
no subject
He checks behind him again.
He doesn't want to stay in this position much longer, but if Raph had that much trouble climbing then Don would have significantly more. He doesn't have any way to make handholds, he can't risk a running start, and there's only so far he can propel himself with his staff when the direction is straight up - and that runs no guarantee of a smooth landing.
Besides, he is the clumsy one - something he will freely admit only within the privacy of his own head - and he doesn't want to risk trying for any of the further poles if he doesn't have to.
In the end, he compromises, sliding cautiously around the corner and over to the base of Raph's pole, keeping as quiet, still, and small as his fifteen years of stealth training allow him, and careful to keep watch on the working kedan.
Hurry up.]
no subject
Carefully Raphael returns, slinks down the post and kneels down. Use him as a step stool and get up there while the guard is lax, Don.]
no subject
Don shifts back to give Raph room to settle back on solid ground and glances nervously at the guard patrol, but doesn't hesitate. One leap takes him up to Raph's shoulder, and another propels him up high enough to catch the pole. It shifts just slightly, and Don grits his teeth, swinging himself up top as carefully as he can in the same movement.
Oh, man, he is never letting Raph talk him in to anything like this ever again.
Then he looks down.
It doesn't change his mind
He locks his jaw and closes his throat against the immediate nausea, promptly distancing himself from the situation the way he'd learned when he'd first started trying to learn about turtle biology and stumbling into all the wrong places. He'll take a minute to glance over the area, marking where the staff appears to be, the- the damage, what they're doing to treat it, any hints at all to what caused it, and where the highest congregation of guards seems to be, for analysis later, when they have the time-
Then, if nothing interesting happens, like a sudden satanic ritual or someone screaming and pointing in their direction, he'll carefully move to drop back down to where his brother is, still keeping his mouth tightly shut and relying on Leo's hand signals for the rest. Time to go?]
no subject
no brainstorming, no
Don rattles around on top of that structure like he's in a goddamn typhoon, but thankfully being 'clumsy and loud' in ninja terms is like being super quiet in regular terms. So they remain undetected while Donnie sits there to see whatever he wants to see -because giant gaping shell wounds are always pleasant to look at- and then climbs back down.
Raph's running his finger over the chip in his plastron thoughtfully as he keeps an eye out for guards. When Donnie finally drops to the ground and motions for them to get out of there, Raph shakes his head and points down. The sewers; they're gonna go down and check those out too.]
no subject
Don jerks his hand once, sharply, and frowns. No. Then he jerks his thumb toward the work site and shakes his head emphatically just to make sure Raph doesn't miss his point, because giant gaping wound. The kedan aren't hurting the turtle, even if he has some issues with their treatment plan, and they've pushed their luck enough already, without Leo around to keep them organized or Mikey around to-
Well. Without Leo around.
(And as good as he was at ignoring the big picture in favor of the details, the image is still seared into his brain. Everything. The smears of blood, the careful way the kedan were easing the fractured pieces out of flesh, the torn and swollen unnatural look to the wounds that were already cleared, the unhealthy scent in the air- It's only going to get worse the longer he lets it stay in his head without doing anything about it, and his stomach is clenching up enough already.)
And Don wants to go.]
no subject
There are sewers in this turtle's shell. He wants to see if they're man-made, if the sewers were put into his shell after it was hollowed out by the kedan or if they were already there. This is freaking important, because then they needed to see what they could do for the poor turtle that carries them around all fucking day and night.
Raph slaps Don's hand down when he jerks his thumb.]
Let's go.
no subject
[Getting captured wasn't going to help the turtle much, Raph.
Don looks increasingly annoyed, shaking his head and actually starting to move toward their exit, because this just was not the place to talk about it.
And because he knew he'd follow Raph in anyway, if his brother went, but maybe if he moved first he could head that off at the pass.
Maybe.]
no subject
GET YOUR ASS BACK HERE
Raph reaches out and grabs Don's mask tails to yank him back. YOU ARE GOING IN THE SEWERS WHETHER YOU WANT TO OR NOT]
no subject
And glare
Fine]
no subject
WHAT MAKES YOU THINK YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO RETALIATE AGAINST BROTHERLY VIOLENCE
NOW YOU'RE DOING DOWN]
That's it you wussy little beanpole-!
[Raph shoves Don over and jumps atop him because this is the perfect time and place to get into a scuffle, nevermind that the ensuing struggle smacks them into the pole and-
And-
knocks
it
over
-okay so the resulting cacophony of collapsing lumber and light boxes is somewhat alarming, but they can still get away, right?]
no subject
[AHHH RAPH THIS IS LITERALLY WHY ALL SPECIES OF TURTLES CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS
THEY BEGOT YOU]
I'd recommend running! Now!
[Don is already spinning on heel to bolt...some way, that way, the way they came in from? WHY ARE THERE NO CONVENIENT FIRE ESCAPES TO JUMP AROUND ON?]
no subject
Really, it's no surprise that this results in their eventual apprehension -especially since they don't want to fight too hard against the police just doing their jobs- and detainment.
...so they're going to prison.
Darn it.]
no subject
Everything about this is your fault.
[Just so he knew.]
[And now they're off to prison.]
