[Expecting Asbel to dodge it, Korra brought her foot around in a roundhouse and the closest stalagmite near her shot forth from the ground and sped it’s way towards him. However, when Korra notices that he wasn’t on his feet she stopped it just as it practically brushed against his nose. She made her way over to him and it fell back to the ground, rolling away harmlessly.]

No, don’t even apologize. It’s my fault, I thought I could try to work some airbending in there without overdoing it. Guess not.

[She offered her hand to Asbel and smiled.]

This is where we shake hands, right?

Yeah.[He takes her hand and smiles back easily. His pride stings a little, but it's an obvious loss and he'll just have to deal with it like a big boy.]

It's probably something that's hard to learn in the midst of a fight...I don't know how much help I'd be. Windor's filled with a lot of wind eleth so it's familiar to me, but bending is so much different...

[He's clearly thinking it over.]

[Once he’s up, Korra doesn’t release his hand right away and she squints as she peers at the eye that housed Lambda. Not getting anything Korra nods.]

Yeah, I remember Richard saying something about artes or something and I have to say that is nothing like bending at all, and how it uses the elements is beyond me. Eleth is the chi, or life energy, of your world right?

[Or something. She couldn’t remember Richard’s exact wording on the subject.]

[For a brief moment that ring of red light appears again, and a voice echoes through Korra's head, low and amused and definitely not Asbel's.]

Don't get too curious, now.

[And then it's gone in the space of a second.]

It's what makes up everything, yeah. Eleth is produced by the Lastalia, Ephinea's core, and the Valkines make sure it's in the right balance.

[Disembodied voices are not what Korra was expecting and she blanches, staring at Asbel's eye like it had tried to shoot her with it's own sword beam.]

...Yeah, I know it's stored in crystals. Big ones, right? How do you get the Eleth out?

Well, I don't use cryas crystals, usually, but it's the same either way...you channel eleth through yourself to use them. That's why my artes won't hurt or do more damage than I want them to, not to anyone I don't want to.

[...But that doesn't go for swords, and it's a live, sharp blade he practices with.]

So it really is like chi. Channel the chi to spiritually connect to your element. [She chews the inside of her cheek, a physical representation of her mind gnawing on the comparison.]

Now these artes are tied to the eleth, does that mean your sword was made with eleth? [Because that sounds weird to be able to put something like eleth into a metal.]

...Well everything's made up of eleth at the core, you're thinking of cryas, and no. I'm not channeling it through my sword, I'm using it with my sword. Think of it as, um...

[He stops to try and think how to explain it.] I sort of use it as conduit for it, like an extension of myself.

[Trying to fully understand this is just giving Korra more questions than answers. She looked over at the jagged trail of stalactites and put her hands crossed in front of her, as if to mimic and open book. Then she brought her hands down while keeping them in contact with each other, the rocks crumbling back below the ground as she did so and with a sweeping motion with one arm followed by the other, the dirt and soil covered it back. The missing, uprooted grass left it obvious something happened there, but it was better than nothing.]

Did you learn how to use the artes with Richard then?

[She remembered Asbel mentioning they had been friends since childhood.]

Not really. I was trained at the Knight Academy...Richard had private tutors. It would have been nice if we'd trained together, though...

[He watches Korra curiously, trying to suss out just what the connection bending had to it's user. Tarlokk's explanation hadn't quite made sense tohim, but watching...he thought he was starting to get it.]

I made up most of my style while I was training with Captain Malik. I don't think any of the other knights use it.

So you're a soldier? [Not something Korra would have guessed. Ever.]

Or knight, I mean. I guess I mean. What's the difference?

Actually, I'm a lord. I was called back to Lhant just before I graduated from the Academy.

[Let that sink in for a minute, Korra.]

The royal knights are the personal guard and army of the King of Windor. Most of Windors duchys and provinces have their own armed forces, so the Knights are tasked with keeping peace between them, and protecting the capital, Barona, as well as the people of Windor.

A lord? Like a rich guy owning a lot of land kind of lord? [Trying to get that is difficult, Asbel just seemed young to her.]

So you trained at the academy where those knights trained, but aren’t one of them? [It’s more of her saying it aloud to comprehend it than it is a question.]

Well, Lhant's not the biggest province, but...yes basically.

[His expression goes a little distant as she says it. It's only been a year, but somehow it feels a little far away, now, after everything that happened to all of them in that year. But how it started was...]

Yeah. I didn't...actually intend to go back to ruling Lhant. I wanted to protect everyone. But my father died before I really had a chance to understand him. That's when I came back.

[...And everything went to hell but he's not going to talk about that part.]

Protecting everyone’s a pretty hard job. [Seriously.]

Sorry to hear about your dad. [She had been using those exact words a lot lately.]

How’s your mom, she still okay?

[This was making Korra ache for seeing her parents.]

Mom's fine, although between Hubert, Sophie and I, we've turned the rest of her hair gray.

[He looks up at her, all determination and fire. Oh no Korra you don't know what you've triggered.]

I know it's hard...I failed before. It's not enough for me to just get stronger...I know that now. But if people work together, they can protect each other, and more people than anyone could alone.

I didn’t know you had brothers and sisters.

[In fact she had him pegged for an only child. That look though is one Korra had seen before, and one she had given before as well.]

Yes. It is hard. [And now she really wished Bolin and Asami were here too, they along with Mako, made being the Avatar so much easier.]

I didn’t know all that came with being a lord. [Total South Pole bumpkin here. All Korra had ever owned was Naga and the igloo Korra made for her.]

[Let's move on from him having father heebie-jeebies he is 19 he cannot deal with this. He nods to her, all business and seriousness.]

I have to work towards securing the future for the people of Lhant. That's the duty of a Lord, whether it's with a sword or with paperwork.

Yep, daughter-sister does sound weird. [No argument from Korra, just blunt honesty with agreement. Now she was starting to understand why some of the other foreigners thought her world was just downright odd.]

Paperwork sounds pretty boring, but if it gets the job done. How are you handling the transition to Tu Vishan?
