[Eyebrows raised, Korra blinked a few times letting that sink in. Aside from the creepy “Dead” part, that sounded pretty close to what Korra’s birthright was.]

What makes the Abhorsen’s Charter Magic different from anyone else that learns it?

[Unable to discern if that was just a title with certain duties, Korra had to ask. After all, she rarely go the chance to do so.]

Aside from the fact that we're particularly talented- not much. But we're able to use another sort of magic, that isn't part of the Charter.

[Sabriel's next words are solemn.]

It's called Free magic- necromancy is a specific type of Free Magic, and Abhorsens are the only people who can use both Charter and Free magic- and use Free magic without becoming corrupted, as long as we use it wisely.

[Free magic sounded more restrictive than free. Before Korra could point out the contradiction, the moment of her studying the element of freedom while being bound to Air Temple Island passed through her mind. Contradictions seem to be abundant when it came those that inherited legacies.]

I didn't know the dead was such a problem in your world. There's spirits that fall under the Avatar's duties, but that has less to do with the dead than most people think.

[The only spirits that had once been human were the past Avatars as far as Korra knew.]

Wait. We're in the place between life and death. What does that mean for you?

And the Emperor's explanation wasn't particularly helpful.

Actually, I mean if some of the foreigners are here because they died, what does that mean for your Free magic?
