Sinbrilee | Dreaming | Death

Life. Dreaming. Death. Three realms overlaid upon one another and yet each distinctly their own. They dwell in Life and do so live upon the back of the great turtle as those of Sinbrilee did upon the shell of his sister. However, there stand numerous arches of marble throughout the ruined city that are inlaid with runes beyond understanding. Those that live and breathe which step through those whose runes glow with faint, iridescent light tread instead into the realm of Dreaming.

Here, there exists no single defining characteristic beyond the visitor's imagination. The landscape sculpts to their individual thoughts, the events to their dreams. From a drab gray nothing to the most brilliant of displays, the senses perceive all that they wish to perceive for all that nothing here truly exists. This far from Tu Vishan, the ability to shape their surroundings is all they have, for Sinbrilee's Dreaming does not have the energy to sustain powers, only the bodies of those that dwell here.

Should two parties near, then the Mesh begins. Dreams, you see, not only can be shared, but they strive to be. These visions sculpted into reality reach out for one another and blend. They begin an exchange akin to a linking of the minds, within which one visitor can learn the other's deepest thoughts. Their limitation is but compatibility, for two minds that cannot flow upon the same current cannot hold the Mesh.

Happiness or loss, the landscape and events play out memories and fancies with a most convincing air. The mood rises and falls with the tide of the visitor's mind, detached as they are from the soothing influence of a great turtle's mind. Nothing here, however, is real; 'constructs' simply fade if taken through the archways and even the greatest scientific minds or tools will reveal nothing of its source. This is an ancient magic of an ancient realm, long practised in concealing itself from any prying.

Note: Due to the fluid and highly individual nature of Dreaming, no official subheaders will be provided in the comments of this post. Feel free to post and thread however you like, so long as the rules of Dreaming are adhered to.

Normally, she would agree. Her sense of self-preservation could be strong if there were no other lives on the line beside her own. The problem was, she was also curious. And the haze of the dream had dulled her senses until the curiosity briefly took over.

"...can I see?"

The instinctive answer, is, of course: No.

Instead, he says, carefully, 'Why?'

Because I'm curious.

It was the truth, but there was also more to it. Something that she couldn't quite put into the proper words.

"It feels...familiar. Not a lot, but enough."
imaginate: ([lantern] not today)

'How so?'

His words are a little cold. He doesn't want it to be familiar to her, the pain, and disquiet. It destroys children: makes them grow up well before their time, and she's, what? Eleven? The same age as Damian.

It disgusts him to think about, and his lip curves downwards in a grimace.

"I don't know. That's why I want to see."

He pauses, and pushes open a nearby door. It leads to a devastated battlefield, fallen buildings, fire and smoke everywhere. There aren't any bodies, and there's no blood. Simply an appearance.

He watches, for her reaction.

Her face remains mostly blank, eyes taking in the damage and destruction around her. Her eyes immediately lift to the skies, tilting her head up and in towards the door to get a better view. Trying to find any airships that might have remained in the area.

"Why would they attack an empty city?" She wanted to know; it was the only explanation for a lack of the dead. Unless they had been fortunate enough to evacuate in time.
imaginate: ([kyle] didn't know)

'It's not empty,' he says. 'Everyone's dead.' He's just not showing her the bodies, suppressing that image. She's a child, even this destruction shouldn't be familiar to her, for all that she's remaining calm, her furtive demeanour is more of a tell than she intends it to be.

'You recognise it.'

Not a question.

"...oh."

It was as simple as that. A single syllable. Soft. Low. But otherwise neutral. She continued to look around for another moment, not bothering to question why she couldn't see the bodies (maybe they had all died inside?), before turning back with a shake of the head.

"I've never been here before."

Not that she could recall. The soldiers had traveled to so many cities during the months she'd been with them. None of the landmarks seemed familiar. The streets were all new. It was only the destruction itself that she recognized. The cause behind such Pain and Loss.

She shouldn't have a reason to know what this is - the sight, the feel of it. Anger wells up in him and he gestures for her to come back towards the door.

'I meant. The atmosphere. You've been on a battlefield.'
unetrustworthy: (not one of them)

[personal profile] unetrustworthy 2013-09-14 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
She turned back. Nodding once in confirmation.

"Yes."

Frustrated (but not at her), 'Why?'

Why did she have to? What had she been doing there? What business did people have, dragging children into everything? It's an overpowering fury, helpless, desperate. And worse: it's too open-ended, and has nowhere to go.

There was a brief hesitation at the question. Staring up at Kyle in confusion, as if she didn't quite understand the question.

"What do you mean?"

Was he genuinely asking her why there was a war where she came from? How was she supposed to know the answer to a question she'd asked nearly every single day of her young life.
imaginate: ([kyle] huh what)

His shoulders sag, and the fight leaves him.

'General frustration with the state of the world,' he says, forcing a smile that's more dead than alive. 'C'mon, let's go. You don't need more of this.'

She didn't smile back.

"...alright." Her eyes lowered, carefully guiding her feet back to Kyle despite the rough terrane. Despite what her lack of reaction may imply, she had very little intention or desire to stay in a constant reminder of her old life. A small hand reached for his, hoping he would help pull her out of there. "You're right. I don't. And neither do you."
