Event | Sinbrilee | Bacchanal

Characters: Any and all!
Date: August 24 - 30th
Location: Sinbrilee
Situation: An ancient festival of an ancient city, all are welcome at the Bacchanal!
Warnings/Rating: Please label threads as appropriate.

Death and destruction cannot curtail the single most important festival celebrated by the denizens of Sinbrilee: The Bacchanal! The ghosts in and about the city have begun to gossip about high fashion and festivities, sending any that inquire to the Amphitheatre -- a grand, circular structure nestled in the west side of the city.

This structure bore the fall of Sinbrilee and the wear of time with dignity, having lost handfuls of archways and one long stretch of wall to crumbling decay. Despite this, it is obvious that the amphitheatre once hosted many a display and every more festivities than the mind can grasp. This was their solace and safety; here is where the people of Sinbrilee came to find the mind's escape from all that threatened them and their great turtle.

Ghosts have been busy throughout the week, clearing paths through debris and hanging great cloth banners of soft blues and greens to disguise the more blatant signs of its decline. Many hundreds of them shimmer and slid through the area, providing for tables upon tables of food, offering drink, and overseeing competition of sport and skill (some even denying death's non-corporeal curse to enter).

Here, well... Here is where the party begins!

[Well, Clark certainly does manage to surprise him. Damian gives him a blank stare for a moment, then his eyebrow hikes up a little. After what the Alien has seen him go through in the city, bored is not exactly a descriptive he'd have used.]

[... but he doesn't bring it up, out loud, and a part of him is - grateful, that it's not mentioned out here in public. And his voice is softer, smoother, when he speaks again.]

I have been... documenting as much of the new writing seen in Sinbrilee as I can. For working on deciphering it, later. But this...

[He motions at the gathering.]

You must know gathering such as this are not exactly unusual for the family.

I should have figured you didn't have a 'rest' mode.

[He was half-joking, half-checking Damian was alright. Because year of friendship with Bruce have taught him Bat-speech, but he still forgets sometimes Damian wasn't a bat all his life. He met him in here, when Bruce told him he had a son and he was already Robin.]

I do know, I've been your father's human wall when he's drunk almost since I first interviewed him. Doesn't mean I particularly like them though, I always hoped Lois would take that kind of articles.

[And Damian almost-smiles as though Kal paid him a compliment (in a way, he did).]

Of course not, it is not how I was taught.

[It's all complicated by the fact that he was raised to be... worthy of the Bat. Not that Talia was obsessed with Bruce Wayne or anything. So that might be making everything both more familiar and less - expected.]

[The comment about Father when drunk, though, makes Damian's eyes widen as that mental image... isn't something he has actually witnessed (he had seen Father fake being inebriated, but that is something entirely else) or truly imagined. For a moment, he is unsure what to say. So he... plows on. More or less.]

With how much can be accomplished at parties, for those who are determined to do so, I never cease being surprised at how many people actually dislike them.

[... okay, he dislikes them, too, a little, because too many people and he can't control everything that's happening, but, really? Hiding behind somebody and hoping she will take on the occasions? >Tt.< Except Damian abstains from blurting that out.]

[Bruce was faking being drunk most of the time, and Clark didn't need a breathalyzer to know that. He would grab glasses and glasses of the most expensive champagne and it would barely touch his lips. But he had a reputation.]

Enlighten me, then. What can a man like me accomplish at a party then?

[... better. Damian wouldn't put it past his Father for some of it to have been real, anyway.]

Information, of course. At a party, you have the opportunity to observe people who know one another that you might not have been aware of, and whom you may engage in conversation that may lead to things slipping out. Some that they did not know, some that you did not.

In a place like this especially, it may be that many people know pieces of information that make no sense unless put together with the pieces that others know.

[That's something a journalist would be doing, wouldn't it?]

There are two types of journalism, Damian.

[He answers without missing a beat, which makes it pretty clear he was actually expecting Damian to answer that. A funny thing about dealing about too-smart-for-their-own-good people on an almost daily basis is that you start seeing patterns.

He also says 'two' when there's actually a lot more, but for now it will do.
]

One is what you're describing, putting yourself out there and getting some answers no matter what the cost. That's most useful when people expect you already, so your only chance is to try to trick them into saying more than what they had planned to. That's Lois's style, and it's useful for front pages.

The other one is... learning to look. Just because someone isn't in the middle of a crowd it doesn't mean they are missing everything that's going on. [He motions around the party, so Damian turns around and sees what Clark sees.] You can see a lot by simply being there, and meddling or interfering sometimes prevents you from seeing what you would have otherwise. Once you've gotten the whole picture it's easier to figure out who to talk to and what to ask.

That's my style. [And he's won a couple pultizers as well, so he must be doing something right.]

You are talking about situations where you have the choice.

I was talking about making the most of a situation where you already are.

I am sure you can adhere to your style and turn a gathering such as this into a waste of time.
