All great strategies, except for the time a human mage accidentally kicked reality in the balls and distorted everyone's everything. Except for this time, where Loki dared not fool with anything that might put him in a precarious position. He has a small green glass bauble on a thin ribbon when he finds himself up on Zatanna's rooftop, rolling it in the fingers of his left hand. Dressed in loose mortal fashions and alarmingly petite as he is, he's a singularly unimpressive godling. Even so, he was one that had moved with a certain alarming silence and stealth.
Hey, he wasn't coming up here without some sort of warding available to him. ]
Enjoying your fresh air, magician?

[She was sitting cross-legged on the ground when his presence made itself known. Not magically--the entire Turtle was pulsating with far too much magic for her to be able to sense a single entity--but, rather, it was his voice that first caused her to glance up from her latest reading assignment.]
I have a name, you know.
Zatanna.

Zatanna then. I suppose I should introduce myself better than I had the other day. I am Loki, son of the house of Odin and the blood of Laufey. I am a prince of Asgard, and the god of mischief and lies.
[ He says all of this with a practiced cadence as he walks over to her, and it carries an odd formality. Names had their own kinds of power, after all. He clearly intends to sit by his new magician friend that he only somewhat wanted to strangle. He wouldn't, couldn't, but he certainly did wish he could. ]
Nice to meet you formally and all that.
no subject
That's a mouthful.
Learning to spell your name in kindergarten must've been a challenge.
[If he wanted to sit, she wasn't going to say no. If he wanted to strangle her, however, that might be a bit of a problem.]

Really, it's more of a resume than anything else.
[ He shrugs his shoulders as he settles by her. ]
no subject
Interesting resume. Not many people are usually willing to hire someone who admits to lying and causing trouble.
Really, all you had to say was 'hi, I'm Loki and I can do magic' and you would've been set.
no subject
Now, tell me, are we making a deal or are you just going to share what you know freely? Either works for me.
no subject
[That's an oxymoron.]
That's so funny, because neither work for me.
I'm not making any deals, and there's no way I'm just going to randomly start divulging everything. You want to know something, ask. And maybe I'll answer.
[Magicians had their secrets for a reason, after all. In spite of the subtle eye roll as she said this, she was actually serious about the potential for not answering.]
no subject
Alright, you picked up the local magic for a reason. You needed something. Gripping reality by its most gentlemanly of parts was to what originally desired end?
no subject
[There was a long period of silence in which she needed to decode what the heck he just said.]
Never heard it put like that before. I think.
I was trying to cancel out a set of charms. That's what the spell was originally intended for, according to the translations I have. Don't really speak kedan.
no subject
All this to try to break some charms? You are the 'go big or go home' sort, aren't you?
no subject
[Oh, shove it, Loki.]
Well, it's not like I'm going home anytime soon.
[The response comes dry, sarcastic, with more than a hint of weariness to it. As if she were stating the obvious. Which, to be fair, she kind of was.]
no subject
[ He casually shifts into her personal space to read what she'd been looking over. ]
So what was the spell, anyway? And do you read spells backwards often in your homeland?
[ That last bit had been sticking with him since she'd first taken credit for the spell-tastrophe. ]
no subject
I do, yes, actually.
It's a style unique to my father's bloodline. Inspired by a famous ancestor of ours; for some reason, most of our magic only ever works if we say them backwards.
