Aihsohlow | Phorezton | Markutte | Countryside

The commerce town of the tried. Temperatures within the dome are kept at a lofty 18C (62F) year round and the population of Markutte dresses less in furs and more in linens obtained through trade. Their long hair is frequently shorn short in the current fashion and they are, on the whole, less hardy than their kin in Phorezton and Aihsohlow, but even more friendly as they are currently in the throes of the Harvest Haul, a festival that concludes their rare growing seasons and agricultural bounties.

Trade. That's the foundation of Markutte and there are three town squares that are home to transient stalls and merchandise from the country and all surviving areas of Konryu. Many kedan have made their way here and occupy the occasional stall space, selling their wares and exchanging gifts with the citizens as they grasp the nature of the festival underway. Once again, visitors that make the trek here are expected to donate a gift that will be regifted at random, earning access and a stamp of their tin visa that resembles the oblong crystal coin used as currency in this realm.

Police are on the lookout for financial crimes here and will demand visas of any they suspect to be committed fraud, short-selling merchants, or thieving in any way, shape, or form. There are three vistas, one in each market square, upon which heralds stand and announce the crimes and punishments noted of the previous day. Minor theft is common and the punishment is a brand upon the criminal's neck; major theft results in a loss of a finger for each item stolen; fraud here is punishable by death, but only twice will there be an announcement of an execution during the landfall.

The auctions here are quite lively and characters can expect a minor bidding war to obtain their items, but each item is in pristine condition and provided to them wrapped within a thin set of furs as a thanks for their purchase.

[Annabeth's aware of him coming over, just out of being in tune with her surroundings no matter how deeply she's distracted by working - especially when she's outside. For demigods, it can be literal life or death.]

[So she looks up just before he speaks, a flash of recognition in her own face.]

Yeah. And you're Mako? [It's only half a question, because her memory's pretty near perfect, but it seems the polite way to respond.]
browbeater: Ooooooh it's too real. (I'm detached)

[well, at least she remembered him. He nodded in response to the question.] Yeah. [and he never knew the difference between her being just polite and the legit question. It worked.

He glanced back at the architecture, though it wasn't going to contain his interest for long. None of it was similar to the things he'd grown up with-- the sky scrapers with their Earth Kingdom and Fire Nation influence. But this was strange, comparing this to Sinbrilee.]

You've been here for awhile. How often do we make landfall...? And is it usually like this? Seeing the other people in this place?

There's no real pattern to how often, since it's by the whim of Asti. This is the fourth in my time here, though, if Sinbrilee counts despite being sunken underwater. There are about eight continents, depending on how many more sank. They've all been really different so far.

The first continent was Vailequios, over a year ago now. It was a wasteland, though, the cities destroyed and razed in war, the population gone - dead, actually, and most of the corpses were being held in a Mausoleum some distance inland. [Until they were reanimated and attacked the turtle but whatever.]

Chihuelo was the second, though we were limited to the city of Atamsichar along the coastline; Atam for short. There were people there, but they didn't like us much, and the structure of the city itself was very rigid, very rule bound - no children residing there either. Everyone was kept inside by a giant wall surrounding it, so I have no idea what the continent was like beyond the city. That was about - eight months ago? There were about four months between Atam and Sinbrilee.

[...she accidentally word vomited, but hey, he asked.]
browbeater: That was NOT the reaction I wanted. (Goddamnit.)

[blink

give him a minute to let all that sink in.]

Someone put the corpses in a mausoleum? Who? Why? What happened to all of them, just the war? Do you know who it was between?

[that was a ton of questions-- and Mako realized it, reeling them back.]

Sorry, that was the first I'd heard of... well, any of that.

I'm not surprised. There aren't that many people still here who were around then.

[A beat.] I have no idea who moved the corpses, though. [A lie, but it's effortless, and there's no sign of the lie in her face.] All I know is the continent was apparently decimated in a war, a war I suspect involved our friend Mally. [You know. Malicant. Somehow Mally's stuck with her as a nickname above anything else.]
browbeater: Ooooooh it's too real. (The baby was not okay.)

[personal profile] browbeater 2013-12-07 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
[he knew who she was talking about when she mentioned Mally. Catty had given him that nickname when he first arrived, on his first network post. But he nods at the rest. If there were lies, he didn't seem to know. She seemed honest enough.]

Got it.

[he wasn't sure what else to ask. Maybe overloading the questions was overdoing it. He rubbed the back of his head]

... So, did the buildings remind you of something?

[She blinks.] Not in particular? Not like Sinbrilee. I mean, I can recognize the designs and there are similarities to things I've seen before but - I just like architecture.
