The commerce town of the tried. Temperatures within the dome are kept at a lofty 18C (62F) year round and the population of Markutte dresses less in furs and more in linens obtained through trade. Their long hair is frequently shorn short in the current fashion and they are, on the whole, less hardy than their kin in Phorezton and Aihsohlow, but even more friendly as they are currently in the throes of the Harvest Haul, a festival that concludes their rare growing seasons and agricultural bounties.

Trade. That's the foundation of Markutte and there are three town squares that are home to transient stalls and merchandise from the country and all surviving areas of Konryu. Many kedan have made their way here and occupy the occasional stall space, selling their wares and exchanging gifts with the citizens as they grasp the nature of the festival underway. Once again, visitors that make the trek here are expected to donate a gift that will be regifted at random, earning access and a stamp of their tin visa that resembles the oblong crystal coin used as currency in this realm.

Police are on the lookout for financial crimes here and will demand visas of any they suspect to be committed fraud, short-selling merchants, or thieving in any way, shape, or form. There are three vistas, one in each market square, upon which heralds stand and announce the crimes and punishments noted of the previous day. Minor theft is common and the punishment is a brand upon the criminal's neck; major theft results in a loss of a finger for each item stolen; fraud here is punishable by death, but only twice will there be an announcement of an execution during the landfall.

The auctions here are quite lively and characters can expect a minor bidding war to obtain their items, but each item is in pristine condition and provided to them wrapped within a thin set of furs as a thanks for their purchase.

[Annabeth looks up when she hears Vanessa, a faint smile expanding on her face. In all her disappearing off the face of the turtle, seeing her again now reminds her that she'd missed Vanessa lot, missed just chatting and spending time with her. Her eyes fall on the shackles, and she gives them a quizzical look, but she pats the sword first.]

Drakon bone. That's with a 'k,' not a 'g.' [Her tone is both amused and almost kind of sad; the weapon's kind of a constant reminder of Damasen, after all, and the whole thing is still fairly fresh in her mind.]

[Vanessa's missed seeing Annabeth, too, but she knows that her friend had been dealing with some heavy stuff and needed time away. She really doesn't blame her.

She glances down at the shackles, making a face and shrugging in answer to the quizzical look.]

What's the difference, exactly? [She'll just go ahead and take a seat next to Annabeth now.]

[She doesn't believe that shrug for a second, but she lets it slide for now, grinning a little more when Vanessa sits down. Annabeth shifts around some of her things to make extra space.]

Drakons are older than dragons, for starters - more serpentlike and a lot harder to kill. Their skin's tougher, not all that penetrable. Not exactly the kind of monster you want to face in any situation. [Trust her, she has.]

So how do you fight one and kill it in order to get a sword made from one? [She's peering at the blade with more interest now because that's so cool, Annabeth.] I mean, that's really got to be one of the best weapons out there, right? Or the skin in general. Think of what you could do with something that's hard to penetrate.

[Hard to believe that she used to be a pacifist, right?]

I've never actually killed one myself. Fought one, but Clarisse - she's a friend, daughter of Ares - did the actual killing, stabbing it through the mouth with an electric spear.

[Her face falls a bit, as she remembers the second time. And Damasen.] The throat's vulnerable. It's the best way to take advantage of them. The bones left behind are spoils of war and can be fashioned into a weapon.

[She runs her fingers along the flat edge of the blade, looking it over at the same time, and if her voice drops a little, she doesn't really notice.] It is strong, though. The leather is, too. Unbelievably useful. [And life saving.]

[Vanessa catches the way her face falls, looking her over carefully. Whatever it is, whatever she's thinking about, it's probably painful in some way. She got that, really.]

I'll have to write this down somewhere, just in case I ever find myself facing down a drakon for some God unknown reason.

[A beat.] Are you okay?

Let's just hope they don't actually exist in this universe, or yours, and you never have to.

[She wrinkles her eyebrows for a moment. It's not like where it's from is a secret, and Vanessa already knows about her having gone there.] I'm fine, well - it's just surprising that this is here so soon. Or at all, but I'm getting less and less surprised by the things that show up. [a pause.] I - it was given to me - [another pause] In Tartarus.

At this point, I wouldn't be surprised at what exists in this universe. [A laugh.] Or mine, actually.

[Vanessa nods, quiet for a moment.] You find the strangest things on the mainland, I've been noticing. General you. [Glancing at the sword again.] A friend, then?

Maybe there's a continent full of them. [She's grinning a little, but really, let's hope not.]

[Annabeth makes a bit of a face, though, glancing for a moment at the shackles.] I think finding living things always seems a bit weirder.

[She blows out a tuft of air, then nods. It's not like it's a secret. She doesn't want Damasen, or Bob, to be secrets, but she's not exactly ready to talk about them in detail yet either.] His name was Damasen. I was weaponless, till he made it for me.

[She makes a face, because. You know. Maybe. Or something similar, at least.]

I wonder how this works. And why. If the Emperor pulls in our souls, where do our things come from? Where do animals come from?

[Nothing about it really makes any sense to Vanessa.

She pressed her lips together.] Sounds like a good guy to me.

Maybe the objects get sucked in accidentally. They're not organic, maybe it can be more easily transported. But that doesn't really explain animals.

[She smiles softly, even though there's something a little pained in it, too.] Good definitely applies. We - we wouldn't have made it out alive without him. [That's probably about as much detail as she can bring herself to divulge rn.] Finding it here was just... unexpected. [Though there's more in the word than the simple meaning of it.]

And I doubt the animals are clones. Meaning there might be holes in the universes. [Does that make sense? Vanessa sure hopes so.]

I know what you mean. [She gives Annabeth a small, comforting smile. She has no idea what happened or who this guy must have been, but it's important. And that's honestly all she needs to know.] Maybe it means you're going to need it soon.

[Annabeth nods. It does make sense!!] It could take less to transport animals, too. Eshai did say the summoning isn't always precise. If the animals are related to people who get pulled here - I wonder when they get here, to the continents.

[She smiles back, taking it and accepting it for what it is, appreciating that Vanessa doesn't push for details. But then she makes a bit of a face.] I hope not. My weapon collection in this place is already more than I keep at home.

I don't know. Do you think they just keep things in the back for the auctions and wait until they get to that lot? Or do they just find the stuff and immediately try to get rid of it? And where do they find it? [This place was going to be the death of her, she swears.]

Hey, that just means when you get home, you're going to have to start building it up even more. [and then she laughs.] My collection here is a lot bigger than back home, too.

I wonder if the turtle approaching the continents has anything to do with their arrival - like with the turtle's magic. It's hard to imagine them holding off on auctions because the population of Keeliai isn't around, you know?

[Annabeth snorts.] Good thing there's no short supply of them at Camp. [She'll... need a new knife. That thought is kind of sobering. But then she grins.] One dagger too many?

Maybe that's it. [Vanessa laughs, but it makes sense that Annabeth would come up with a plausible theory.] I mean, if things like giant hellhounds were around the continents for too long, there'd have been a bigger fuss, right? Like, that couldn't just go unnoticed for long.

[Vanessa grins back.] One everything too many. Iorveth left me a bow. I mean, I kind of have his whole treehouse, so he left me everything.

Especially if they're all as exuberant as Mrs. O'Leary. But yeah, there's a lot of things I don't imagine would last very long on their own, just waiting.

Oh, right. Frank is teaching you. [Pause] What else was in there?

Do you ever think that the Emperor messing with the boundaries between universes is exactly how Mally has the ability to move to other worlds when he's done here?

[It's just a random question, mostly.]

Bottles of alcohol, other bows and arrows, some kind of drug. Notes for our little rebel group. Stuff written in his own language. Traps. [She's ticking off fingers as she talks.]

If not the same, I don't see why it couldn't be something similar. If we trust her word for it, though, she only started summoning people because of Mally.

[Monosyllabic hum.] The notes are probably useful - are they readable though? Traps, like, to ward off people from entering or for his future use?

Yeah, but she's been summoning people for how long? We're not the first, after all. He could have figured out how to do it.

[Vanessa nods.] Sort of. A lot of it is in... uh, elvish? I guess that would be it. Just in case anyone like stumbled across of it. But then there's the notes about us. [She laughs.] Traps to keep people away from his tree. I have no idea how to disable them.

Well, the kedan were from another world, right? And she summoned them because of Mally, because he destroyed their world. It's kind of hard to tell what magic came first, I guess.

Elvish. I don't suppose you know anyone who can translate? [Slight eyeroll.] I bet if you took Leo, he could figure it out. He's disabled tons of traps before.

We need to go back in time again, to see how long she's been summoning people. To figure out anything in this puzzle.

[She shrugs.] I know a few words, but I doubt it. His world doesn't sound like one anyone else has come from yet. Iorveth was too secretive for his own good. [A snort.] Yeah, but then the tree would be unprotected.

[A nod of agreement.] It'd be nice to know just how many times she's had to summon people in total, too.

[She pulls a bit of a face.] Of course that's how it'd end up. Well, as long as you can get in and out without issue, I guess the traps aren't a big deal.

I guess I could always just ask her the next time we talk. [OR NOT BECAUSE SHE GOES AND GETS HERSELF KILLED.] She likes me well enough.

[A smile.] There's something to that whole invisibility thing.

If you do, let me know. [a sigh follows though.] I don't think she's my biggest fan.

[She grins.] Probably even easier to avoid them when you don't have a body to lug around invisibly, huh?
