The commerce town of the tried. Temperatures within the dome are kept at a lofty 18C (62F) year round and the population of Markutte dresses less in furs and more in linens obtained through trade. Their long hair is frequently shorn short in the current fashion and they are, on the whole, less hardy than their kin in Phorezton and Aihsohlow, but even more friendly as they are currently in the throes of the Harvest Haul, a festival that concludes their rare growing seasons and agricultural bounties.

Trade. That's the foundation of Markutte and there are three town squares that are home to transient stalls and merchandise from the country and all surviving areas of Konryu. Many kedan have made their way here and occupy the occasional stall space, selling their wares and exchanging gifts with the citizens as they grasp the nature of the festival underway. Once again, visitors that make the trek here are expected to donate a gift that will be regifted at random, earning access and a stamp of their tin visa that resembles the oblong crystal coin used as currency in this realm.

Police are on the lookout for financial crimes here and will demand visas of any they suspect to be committed fraud, short-selling merchants, or thieving in any way, shape, or form. There are three vistas, one in each market square, upon which heralds stand and announce the crimes and punishments noted of the previous day. Minor theft is common and the punishment is a brand upon the criminal's neck; major theft results in a loss of a finger for each item stolen; fraud here is punishable by death, but only twice will there be an announcement of an execution during the landfall.

The auctions here are quite lively and characters can expect a minor bidding war to obtain their items, but each item is in pristine condition and provided to them wrapped within a thin set of furs as a thanks for their purchase.

[Resisting the urge to facepalm. Are you even listening to me?, he thinks.]

I didn't say you had to live in Fort Knox - and there are a lot of things Batman can't do, that's why we're here to watch each other. Plus, it's not a guarantee--

[But that's not the point. He's thinking about breaking in just to show her it's possible, but he thinks that's needlessly cruel. He stays calm.]

I don't have anything "going on". This sounds to me like you don't trust my judgement.

Of course I trust your judgement, Kyle. You, more than most.

I'm just still not a hundred percent certain why you're so set on keeping me away from Korra when the only time we've ever actually fought was that thing with Jack...and that's a long story that is never going to happen again, so no worries there.

[imaginate]

[That makes a lot of the tension bleed out from him, and he seems his normal self when he's around her. Mostly. There's still an edge of wariness.]

I'm not trying to keep you away. I'm telling you to be careful. She has a very dangerous kind of pride - she thinks she's invincible, when none of us are and it'll be a harsh lesson when she learns it.

[He runs a hand through his hair, and looks away, at someone taking one of the larger paintings home.]

I don't want you to hurt.

[Likewise, her shoulder slouch. It's hard to stay mad when he says things like that.]

Well, that makes two of us, because I kind of like me in the shape I'm in now.

I promise to be careful, Kyle, but I'm telling you--and this is my judgement talking here--Korra's not going to hurt me. Not the way you're thinking.

[He takes a good, long look at her.]

Okay.

[I believe you.]

If by "panic button", you mean your name on my speed dial list, then I think we both know it's already on there.

[Even drunk, you were the second first name I thought of. To actually call.]

[And then, because she's her and he's him, she moves in a little closer to initiate a brief hug. Showing him that, annoyed as she might be at him some times, she still loved him. Family was like that. They annoyed each other out of love.]

[Brief hug? Nope, this here's a full on bear hug because she understood what he was getting at.]

I'm not sure about the dignity bit - you did just make a joke about me and sparkling.

[Air. Lungs. Breathing. ...okay, no, she loved it when he squeezed her like that. Good thing she could hold her breath for long periods of time.]

[Laughing, he puts her down and tugs her towards looking at more paintings.]

[She joins in the laughter, and lets him pull her along as the actual tour gets underway. Most, if not all, of the tension had been dispelled by this time, leaving only the good feeling of spending time together. Which she had very sorely missed.]

I'll never understand how you managed to find time to play Hero and paint all these.

Don't tell me you're forgoing sleep to paint again? [She still remembered the time she stayed with him, waking up in the middle of the night to find him shirtless and looming in the moonlight with a paintbrush and half-finished work of art on the canvas.]

To be honest, there's not much heroing to be done around here. That leaves [gesticulates to paintings] a lot of free time.

[He winks.]

I get plenty of sleep, don't you worry.

No kidding. I don't even go out patrolling as much anymore. At worse, maybe I'll find a few street scum over in Fire, but most of them seem like they just fight among each other right now.

[Of course, that didn't stop Robin from going out. She knew he did because whenever he did, he would stop by her room on his way back. If she was asleep, he would leave proof that he had been there.]

How can I be sure of that? I'm not there anymore to make sure you keep you bedtime, you know.

[imaginate]

And there's enough people to take care of it.

[Seriously he's losing count of the number of vigilantes here. If it made certain the Robins got some rest, he was fine with it.]

I have a roommate, he manages.

More than enough. And yet, Robin still wanders off almost every night. Even I can't get him to stay in for just one evening.

[She can't help rolling her eyes a little, even though she knows and understands why he does it. Habit.]

Yeah? Who's your latest partner in crime?

[Softly:] It gives him purpose.

[She knows, and he does too, but it never hurts for it to be stated again so they can come to terms with it more fully.]

Name of James T. Kirk. Captain.

[Kyle brightens in a way he rarely ever does when he's talking about someone.]

[It's hard to miss the way Kyle's face brightens at the name. Obviously, this guy was someone pretty special to him.]

Isn't that the guy-- ['Korra called when I called you' except, halfway thought the sentence, she realized that bringing up Korra again might not be the smartest idea. She faltered in her words, stumbling awkwardly before coming to a weak recovery:] ...uh...yeah, I've heard his name a few times. Don't think we've actually met in person yet, though.

[Kyle completely misses why the pause is there, and figures Zatanna's thinking of a few quips or she's thinking about something Jim did.]

Yeah, him. If the League doesn't book us both for Christmas, you can come by - I'm sure he's throwing a party.

Hey, you know how I feel about parties. And you.

[League or no League, she'll be there.]

[He leans over and squeezes her shoulder.]

But between you and me, I'm not really feeling the festive spirit. This is my first Christmas without my mom.

[Her hand comes up to lightly squeeze his in return, and when she looks up, it's quite apparent she can empathize with the sentiment.]

Same. Dad used to always make a point of being home for every holiday. Even when he was on the road, touring.

[imaginate]

[He'd tried to do the same. She'd made no secret of the fact that she was proud of him, and never held it against him, but it still hurt, not being there, and instead having to deal with some far-off conflict he didn't even have any stake in. Is he ever going to get through the regret? It all piles up, and then he keeps it away in his mind's cupboard, only to stumble on it months later during spring cleaning.]

Guess we'll both see each other there, huh?

[She's already had to suffer through deal with Thanksgiving. Watching everyone else on the Turtle who actually had family with them.]

[Maybe now that the worst of it was out of her system...she hoped...this time around might go a bit easier on her.]

I'd better see you there, Mister. Or else I will use a tracking spell to come find you.

[So did he, but the League is at least from his universe, so he felt less alone.]
