Event | Landfall | Bresilyk | Markutte
Characters: Any and all!
Date: December 3 - 11, 2013
Location: Markutte, Bresilyk (landfall)
Situation: Tu Vishan makes landfall at the winterbound republic of Bresilyk!
Warnings/Rating: Please include warnings in comment subject lines
OOC Post | Approved Items | Special Gifts
Aihsohlow | Phorezton | Markutte | Countryside
The commerce town of the tried. Temperatures within the dome are kept at a lofty 18C (62F) year round and the population of Markutte dresses less in furs and more in linens obtained through trade. Their long hair is frequently shorn short in the current fashion and they are, on the whole, less hardy than their kin in Phorezton and Aihsohlow, but even more friendly as they are currently in the throes of the Harvest Haul, a festival that concludes their rare growing seasons and agricultural bounties.
Trade. That's the foundation of Markutte and there are three town squares that are home to transient stalls and merchandise from the country and all surviving areas of Konryu. Many kedan have made their way here and occupy the occasional stall space, selling their wares and exchanging gifts with the citizens as they grasp the nature of the festival underway. Once again, visitors that make the trek here are expected to donate a gift that will be regifted at random, earning access and a stamp of their tin visa that resembles the oblong crystal coin used as currency in this realm.
Police are on the lookout for financial crimes here and will demand visas of any they suspect to be committed fraud, short-selling merchants, or thieving in any way, shape, or form. There are three vistas, one in each market square, upon which heralds stand and announce the crimes and punishments noted of the previous day. Minor theft is common and the punishment is a brand upon the criminal's neck; major theft results in a loss of a finger for each item stolen; fraud here is punishable by death, but only twice will there be an announcement of an execution during the landfall.
The auctions here are quite lively and characters can expect a minor bidding war to obtain their items, but each item is in pristine condition and provided to them wrapped within a thin set of furs as a thanks for their purchase.

Hope for the best, plan for the worst?
[It's a sensible stance and Kyle shares it. Just. Emotionally it's difficult for him to catch up to that, and he takes Tony's sympathy without complaint.]
no subject
How about believing the best is still yet to come? We do the best we can, and sometimes it feels like what we're up against is insurmountable. But I think--or I like to think--that we haven't seen everything the world's got to offer yet.
It just takes time. We'll get there.
no subject
[Wryly:] This the part I explain how everything's that's yet to come is likely out to kill us in lots of horrible ways?
no subject
[It's a very matter-of-fact statement. A little too free, perhaps, but it sounds like Kyle needs the confidence to boost him along.]
There are a lot of big, bad things out there, but we're still here too. I don't think you're going to let what's coming our way take us all out without a fight either. Stop me if I'm wrong, but you just don't seem like the type to roll over.
no subject
[He sounds fond, though. There's nothing more he enjoys more than his pessimism about certain things being proven very, very wrong.]
[Then, he smirks.]
Really? I think my boyfriend would disagree with you.
no subject
[The last part is greeted with a quirk of Tony's eyebrow. Nothing really more than that, as he's not terribly surprised, but it's worth a response.]
Well. Isn't he the lucky man? I wish I had dates that were so accommodating to my tastes. Must be nice.
no subject
[Not that he disagrees with the sentiment. One needs balance.]
Kind of. Yeah. I don't date because of the job, but staying positive, huh?
[Or, as Jim put it "too much and too many people using it against him". Christ. He didn't even do guys and then Jim just sort of happened.]
no subject
[Tony's getting into speed now. Shooting back retorts and jokes because he's starting to feel like himself again. And it's gotten easier to quip where before expressing anything was hard. He grins, teasing Kyle lightly with that answer before shrugging at his question.]
That's all we can do. It's hard. It's always hard, but when you get the chance... It's worth it, right?
[Isn't it? He doesn't actually know. But he'd like to believe that for Kyle's sake, anyway.]
no subject
[He shouldered the burden of being invincible, as any superhero did, and it wasn't easy, to accept he was fallible, especially considering he had as much power as he did. Yet, he'd learnt to drop milking guilt from that, learn and accept and love being human.]
It's what we fight for.
[He's definitely convinced of that, even if he's unsure about how it fits into his life again.]
no subject
[Or Tony just likes to have an answer for everything. He keeps his casual, easy posture. It might be partially an act, but it's an act he's been living for a long time now. Being unconcerned comes easily to him when he's not on a job.]
It's always nice to have something to look forward to. That doesn't hurt.
no subject
[Some things, there's no answer for, and Kyle's - not okay with that per se, but he's learnt to live with it?]
After blackest night comes brightest day.
[It seems like a stock phrase and parts of it are, but the concepts are important to him. He straightens up, barely, a little more serious at the thought.]
no subject
But we can always find the right equation eventually. Everything, even the hard stuff, has a best outcome. It's just... hard to find the right one sometimes.
[He smiles a little more after digesting that.]
Blackest night and brightest day? What is that? Some kind of slogan?
no subject
Yeah.
[Kyle disagrees that everything has an answer and that the best one can be found: some situations never have any right answer and there's just what's less wrong, but he's not about to get into that argument now.]
It's part of my oath actually.
[Here he smiles, a bit shy, but proud.]
no subject
The shy smile Kyle gives him makes Tony smile back though.]
Sometimes you're the best answer. And I know you're going to say you're not. Or that there are other better people out there, but that's missing the point. Sometimes you are exactly what the world needs. Trust me on this one.
no subject
[He closes his right hand into a fist and bites down on the knuckle of his index finger, looking down and focusing on Tony's shoes, and then he starts, haltingly-]
You don't know me. I want to say. I was the last Green Lantern in the universe for a long time. [He drops his hand and meets Tony's eyes.] Maybe I wasn't the best guy for it - hell, I wouldn't have chosen myself - I was just all they had. [he exhales.] I don't mind the affirmation. James would say I need it, and I kinda do; it's a ton of shit to be carrying, but you should know me first.
Okay?
no subject
[It's a completely innocent sounding question. As if Tony doesn't know the weight of his own question. He looks at Kyle with his head cocked at a slight angle and a mild half-smile touching his lips. He's good at effecting that innocence. It's a fallback when pushing won't work.]
I don't know your favorite food or where you hang out on the weekends, but I'd be willing to bet money that you're the type that doesn't fold even when he's got a bad hand. In fact, if it came down to it, I imagine we could count on you to pay off our debts with your own sweat.
[It's cheating a little bit. The answer is general enough to sell to most people, because it applies to what most people want to believe of themselves. But there's also a little extra conviction, and that comes from what he knows of other heroes he's worked with. The type of people who reluctantly became symbols and who never gave up because they just felt that was what they had to do. Kyle's answers have been self-deprecating, reminiscent of Steve talking to him about his doubts.
It's cheating, but Tony believes whole-heartedly in the truth of his sentiment.]
I know what I need to for that much. Unless you want to correct me.
no subject
Whatever you think you know, you're cheating.
[In contrast to several months ago he doesn't actually sound that angry about it. Kyle's played by the rules as much as he can and been dragged through all the mud and barbed wire, he'd normally be furious. Keeliai's taken that from him, locked it away and thrown it into the river, where it floated off and ended up buried in sediment.]
[Maybe it's Tony's conviction that tempers Kyle's irritation. Maybe it's just the thought of what Jim would say if he was standing opposite. Maybe it's the fact that he just doesn't know what to make of the fact that he's being mother henned.]
When it comes to me, you gotta play by the rules.
[This isn't something he bent, even for Jim, his exception. Jim had to earn that right.]
no subject
He needs to tread more lightly around him.]
Oh, was I? I thought I was just being honest...
[He pauses, watching the young man carefully as if he expects him to be angry. Maybe he expects to be scolded, because that's what Thor and Steve would do. Even T'Challa would have some hard words about Tony being presumptuous. When he decides that Kyle isn't going to be angry, he tries again.]
But I'm not wrong. [It's a question. He searches Kyle's eyes as he says that.]
Okay. Let's play by the rules. Does that mean you want me to know you?
no subject
[Oops somebody caught on. Kyle's not angry though, he's stating it to see what Tony's going to do next, because he got caught unawares. Sometimes Kyle wonders how deep the fool he pretends to be or wants to be (instead of what he is) shows to other people.]
[At Tony's question he raises an eyebrow, and smirks.]
Getting to know you... getting to know all about you...
no subject
But I'm not wrong.
[He insists again, because Kyle was right about him being too general, but that doesn't change the fact he was right about the important part. Kyle is that type of hero, and whether or not Tony knows exactly how or why doesn't really matter to him.]
Horrible song choices don't answer my question either. Do you want me to know you? Because I don't mind backing my statement with the appropriate research. You're still going to have to accept it either way.
no subject
[It's more like two kids with one saying did not! to the other's did to!. Kyle's not sure if it's his place to really shove an admonishment at Tony when he might just think of it as a lecture. He's not good at dealing with the type even if Jim has taught him to relax around it, and Jim is the exception to everything already.]
I just like people to make informed choices, whether they're stupid or not. You should think about them first and have backup if necessary. I'm not going to object to spending time with somebody who's charming and handsome, huh? [He smirks, just to lighten the mood. Kyle doesn't mind being known except he never, ever shows anyone the real weakness, and instead displays all the others, the ones that've been conquered or that he can conquer easily.] Ball's in your court, Tony.
no subject
And then he looks honestly startled by the answer he gets. It's not the compliment that catches him. It's the conclusion. A little bit of the calm, steady posture--I like to make informed choices, whether they're stupid or not--and the wording Kyle chooses. Too close to home. Too close to another man that he knows well, and the surprise shows honestly on his face. His expression is almost contrite; nearing pain, but not quite hitting that mark yet. It does reach quiet resignation though. Whether Kyle meant it or not, Tony has been admonished.]
Okay. [He raises both hands in defeat.] You can show me who you really are. You're right, I jumped the gun. I want to make the right choice.
no subject
[He shifts, internally uncomfortable, but keeps smiling.]
All right. Are you gonna ask me to dinner?
no subject
[The answer comes out automatically. He doesn't even take time to consider the question in depth. It still hurts, but Kyle doesn't need to know about that. He doesn't know about Tony or where he comes from or what he's done, so there's no reason for Tony to ruin the moment with sad tales from the past. That won't help anything. He goes along with the joke instead, smiling in that expected, charming way a top CEO should.]
Somewhere nice if you dress up for it. I'm sure you look great in a suit.
