Aihsohlow | Phorezton | Markutte | Countryside

The commerce town of the tried. Temperatures within the dome are kept at a lofty 18C (62F) year round and the population of Markutte dresses less in furs and more in linens obtained through trade. Their long hair is frequently shorn short in the current fashion and they are, on the whole, less hardy than their kin in Phorezton and Aihsohlow, but even more friendly as they are currently in the throes of the Harvest Haul, a festival that concludes their rare growing seasons and agricultural bounties.

Trade. That's the foundation of Markutte and there are three town squares that are home to transient stalls and merchandise from the country and all surviving areas of Konryu. Many kedan have made their way here and occupy the occasional stall space, selling their wares and exchanging gifts with the citizens as they grasp the nature of the festival underway. Once again, visitors that make the trek here are expected to donate a gift that will be regifted at random, earning access and a stamp of their tin visa that resembles the oblong crystal coin used as currency in this realm.

Police are on the lookout for financial crimes here and will demand visas of any they suspect to be committed fraud, short-selling merchants, or thieving in any way, shape, or form. There are three vistas, one in each market square, upon which heralds stand and announce the crimes and punishments noted of the previous day. Minor theft is common and the punishment is a brand upon the criminal's neck; major theft results in a loss of a finger for each item stolen; fraud here is punishable by death, but only twice will there be an announcement of an execution during the landfall.

The auctions here are quite lively and characters can expect a minor bidding war to obtain their items, but each item is in pristine condition and provided to them wrapped within a thin set of furs as a thanks for their purchase.

Bucky's alright. Iconic. Got a certain ring to it. [Though it's really not much of a code name. That's the thing people don't always realize about Bucky, that "Bucky" isn't something the US Government made up, it's his actual name. It's just him in a mask.]

Eh, Toro's got a bunch of our old comics back at our place. I can grab one to sign for you if you want, back in Keeliai. [He has no idea those things are collector items now.]

And shorter. [He nods.] It's way easier to use a nickname or something when you have to call someone. Like Billy, Teddy... Nate.... [He shouldn't have used that, but. He missed Nate.]

... [He has the most stunned expression on his face. The most stunned. He is at a complete loss of words.] You... you would really do that?

[Holy shit.]
beganwithamask: ([unmasked] hmm?)

[The very specific list of names gets him to quirk an eyebrow slightly.] Friends of yours?

[Wait, what did he say? Head tilt.] Uh... yeah? I don't think Toro'd mind, we've pretty much read all of 'em anyway, and I think I got a double of Captain America Comics #1.
witchnotwarlock: (That is not happening)

[personal profile] witchnotwarlock 2014-01-10 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. [Kind of sheepish. He could list off a bunch of nicknames of people who weren't his friends, since that list would probably be longer.

He doesn't know what to do with how his nerdy little brain just short circuited.]
Um. That'd. Yeah.

[No, really, what is he supposed to do with this information now? It's easier to believe that they're now living on a giant turtle, then it is to think that Bucky is going to give him the first issue of Captain America because he has two.] Oh, man. That'd be the best thing in the world. The best thing, are you serious? You know, I can trade, I have a ton of doubles, I don't know what would even equal that, but you can have whatever you want!

[Excuse him while he tries to figure out why comics are such a big deal. They're for kids in the time he's from, or adults who really need a bit of entertainment now and then (like soldiers, who are glad for anything to take their minds off the war temporarily). They're for selling war bonds and getting kids to participate in the war effort. Things like that.] Uh... sure, I'd take a couple future comics for it. Whatever's good. Wait, you actually like that propaganda stuff? Those are totally inaccurate, I was never twelve.

[They're for kids who don't fit in, in the future. Billy could never put into words just how much comics means to him. When you don't have many friends, they were your best ones.]

Well... yeah! I mean, I know you weren't twelve. I don't think anyone would actually think that you were twelve. But the propaganda stuff, it's a part of history now, for me, anyway. And it's not just super rare-- well, it is super rare, but I don't mean just that. Comics transport you to somewhere else, and those make you feel like you're really there, back in that time, reading those comics.

You'd be surprised. That was what they wanted people to think, and how they played me in the newsreels. Back home, anyway, that's what sold war bonds. [He shrugs casually at that.]

It wasn't like that for us. We read comics to get away from where and when we were, for a few minutes. War ain't really a thing you wanna go back to, trust me.

[He holds his tongue on that. Because every kid wanted to be Bucky! Who wouldn't want to hang out with Captain America, fight alongside him and everything. Billy thought it was great, and when he was younger, that's what he wanted to do.]

No, I know. We've been through all kinds of wars, and it's hard for everyone... I don't know. Sometimes things seem really complicated, but then you look to the past, and it doesn't seem too complicated, you know? [It's just... easier, somehow.]

When I was younger, I always wanted some kind of special powers. Or I wanted to work with one of the Avengers, or anything. It's like things could magically get better if you were like people you read about in the comics. [It wasn't. He knew that, it definitely wasn't. But when he was younger, it seemed like it.]

[Bucky snorts at that, even if he doesn't necessarily mean to be derisive. It's just a surprise to hear that, that someone thinks that being like the people in comic books would be better.] Everybody thinks their generation's got it hardest.

So. You fly, apparently, so I guess you got special powers somehow. Did things get any better?
