Situation: Two French War Girls meet up again in the aftermath of recent developments

[She wasn't sleeping very well these days.]

[Some nights, Midii would lay awake. Others, she would pass out from sheer exhaustion and the nightmares would take over. Flashbacks of her old life. The one she had long thought to have left behind. The Captain. The soldiers. Nanashii. Very rarely, she would dream of her brothers. Those were the worst; her face would be wet from tears upon awakening.]

[How many days had passed since the mass bombing? And now the city was under attack. She could feel the unseen presence in the air. A looming shadow threatening their once near-utopian way of life. Was this what her destiny was meant to be? Glimmers of happiness, only for them to go up in smoke.]

[The only comfort was that she could still move freely without the threat of being shot. That only a select few on the Turtle new of the sins of her past, and none of them would ever hold it against her. That she could still walk the marketplace and purchase enough food, even with rationing, to fill her up at least twice a day.]

[Which was what Midii was doing now. Keeping her head low, tendrils of blonde locks hiding her shadowed eyes from view, she weaved through the crowds in search of her day's haul. There was the bakery. The fruit stand. The dairy shop. And, lastly, the bookstore--maybe she would get lucky and there would be another English volume at her current reading level. It would be well worth the price, to give her something to do on those nights when sleep was a lost cause.]

[To date, Eponine was still one of the very select few who could get so close to her and illicit no response beyond casual reciprocation; Midii leaned a little into the older girl's embrace, head not quite resting against her side.]

The park?

I doubt many children would be out and playing right now.

[jondrette]

Then we shall go to the park and speak there. To the tree where we first met.

[unetrustworthy]

[She smiled faintly at the memory, and nodded.]

I was at the bakery earlier. I have some bread we can eat while we talk.

[jondrette]

Yes. Let us do that. Come!

[She leads her in the direction of the park. It doesn't take too long to get there, and once she spots the tree, Eponine wastes no time in sitting.]

Sit!

[unetrustworthy]

[She obeyed, moving to sit at the very base of the tree. Her few bags were placed to one side, and she busied herself digging through the brown bag in search of the day-old loaf she'd just purchased. The freshness scent had long since gone, but the crust was still crispy and the insides were still soft.]

[She broke it in half, offering the larger piece to Eponine.]

[jondrette]

[She accepts the piece.] Thank you.

You said you were in a cafe? [She's more concerned, than anything.]

[unetrustworthy]

[She nodded. Staring at the edges of her piece. Not yet taking a bite.]

I wasn't hurt badly. Some scrapes and bruises. Nothing broken.

And... [Her brows furrowed, recalling the memory clear in her mind.] There was a boy. I'd seen him before. He was wearing a mask. He helped me and some of the others who were worse off.

[jondrette]

I'm glad you are well, then.

[She pauses, raising an eyebrow.]

A boy in a mask?

[unetrustworthy]

Robin. That's what he told me his name was. He walked me home once, when I was out past sunset. Well...sort of. We took the rooftops.

[A strange experience, but one she wouldn't have been willing to turn down.]

It was good he was there. A lot of people got the help they needed because of him. And he showed me how to get to a safe house.

[jondrette]

I'm glad this Robin found you then, p'tite. [She smiles softly. Once more, she had had no one.] And that he kept you safe.

[unetrustworthy]

It was a strange coincidence. Twice, I was in trouble. Twice, he was there.

But I'm glad too. And very grateful. I only wish I could have thanked him afterwards.

[jondrette]

Then Robin is truly watching out for you.

I am sure you will find a way to thank him.

Now, you must eat. [She gestures to her bread]

[unetrustworthy]

I'm not sure I could say that, Eponine.

And why is it, each time we meet up, you make it sound like I never do?

[But she did comply with the request, breaking off a small piece initially and popping it into her mouth. It was sweet. Slightly dry, but nothing a few sips of water could fix.]

[jondrette]

Then perhaps, 'You should stay out of trouble'. Is that better?

[She cracks a slight smile.]

I am looking out for you. You are a small girl, and it makes me happy to see you eat.

[unetrustworthy]

[Better, perhaps, but even less possible. Which is why she smiled slightly right back; Eponine most likely knew that as well. They were both magnets for trouble, in their own ways.]

For the record, I have gained weight. I checked.

[jondrette]

Good, [She says with a fond nod.] You look beautiful for it. I believe your hair is shinier.

[Eponine, meanwhile, has reverted to her all-too skinny weight, following her two months of hell.]

[unetrustworthy]

[Instinctively, a hand went to her hair. Which had grown incredibly long, even with the occasion trims she had started to get for it. The blonde locks fell all the way to the small of her back now. She smiled in a somewhat self-conscious manner, cheeks not quite as red as when certain other individuals complimented her, but feeling shy nevertheless.]

What about you?

[jondrette]

[Eponine, too, extended a hand to Midii's long locks, twisting one of them gently as she felt how soft they had grown. How long it had grown.]

Me? No, I have lost weight, if I ever gained it here.

[unetrustworthy]

[She frowned at that.]

I thought you had, at one point. What happened?

Maybe I should be the one worrying so much about you.

[jondrette]

The past few months were hard for me, p'tite.

[Bright side: Costigan had made her breakfast, when she'd stayed with him. That had been pretty great. And the breakfast wasn't too bad, either.]

[unetrustworthy]

I know. [She'd been there, in Eponine's apartment. Saw the condition she was in.] But you still need to eat. Even with the rations, there's more than you and I were ever used to having. You're letting it go to waste.

[jondrette]

No, I am not! Do not say that. If I do not touch it, someone else has it.

[unetrustworthy]

I don't mean the food, Eponine.

I meant your second chance.

[jondrette]

Marius is gone, Midii. I will have no other chance.

[unetrustworthy]

Yes, you will. You do.

I wasn't loved either, remember? Twice, I wasn't loved. Nanashii rejected me...Damian doesn't return my feelings... [So she still believed] Should I stop eating and give up my life too?
