[EVENT] Bonfire Night

Characters: ALL!
Date: February 21st
Location: Various.
Situation: It’s cold. Time to cuddle up and make bonfires for the warmth.
Warnings/Rating: Add warnings as needed.

As night falls the city’s lights take something of a unique turn. Instead of being lit by millions of paper lanterns, Keeliai is tonight lit by the flames and warmth of dozens if not hundreds of fires. Some of them are small, not much more than warming hearths in a barrel on a street, but others encompass squares and boulevards.

The fire lighting procession winds through the city’s streets, beginning at the first bonfire in Fire Sector. By the time full night has arrived, that procession is a snake illuminated by dozens of torches, parting from the main parade to light smaller fires in smaller streets. It ends, finally, in Central, in the Courtyard of Public Opinion, whose bonfire is second only to the initiating one in Fire Sector.

In some areas an exchange of goods arises, mostly in terms of woollens and other warm clothes and blankets. Though food is considered a public resource on this occasion, bartering small knickknacks, songs, stories and even other woollen items is not uncommon an exchange.

Meals are shared among kedan and Foreigners, commoners and emissaries--primarily stews, soups and other foods easily baked in the coals of the fires. Everyone brings food, and what isn’t contributed to the pot is nevertheless shared around after preparation. Although some bonfires are markedly wealthier than others, food and shelter is spread around to make sure everyone is safe and warm. No one goes cold and alone on this night.

Sokka hadn't known that Katara was going to make anything in preparation for the festival, and so when he heads over to the Water Sector from the Hotel's entrance with Katara, he can't help but be rather surprised by it. And not just surprised, but he was acctually rather ecstatic.

"Sea prunes! You made honest-to-goodness Water Tribe sea prunes!" Well, at least as close to sea prunes as you could possibly get in this crazy world that didn't have honest to gosh sea prunes.

But then of course, his excitement dies down, and he backs away from his obvious encouragement of Katara's cooking. "I mean, I guess sea prunes are alright. I should probably taste one first to make sure they taste alright for the kedan." Katara couldn't let her cooking go to head (not that Sokka ever gave her the opportunity). Besides, he really did want one; he may not admit Katara's a good cook, but she is.

"Yes, Sokka, for the thousandth time, I made sea-prunes. Or as close as I could get to them," she admitted, shaking her head as they neared the first fire. Her brother's enthusiasm actually amused her for the moment as she stood near the glow of the fires spread throughout the area.

"If you're so desperate to try them, why don't you help pass them out, too?" she smirked, offering him the basket and promptly dropping it into his arms without warning.

Drop them and die.

"Hey, do you know how long it's been since I've had authentic Water Tribe cooking?" Sokka asks. "Or at least mostly authentic Water Tribe cooking?" Okay, don't answer that. The answer was last Thursday; Sokka has totally been going to that place that Korra had mentioned had the almost sea prunes for sale. Even if it wasn't one of Sokka's traditional haunts that actually offered him semi-reasonable prices, hey, he could splurge every now and again now that he had a job, right? "You can't hold it against me if I'm, you know, just a little bit excited about that."

Actually, she can, Sokka.

He doesn't even get a rejection of Katara's task out before the basket is in his arms. He's carrying the basket below, and it's pretty heavy it seems, so he's not willing to shift his grip quite yet. "Aww, you mean I have to work before I have any?" Pouting face.

"Yyyyyeaaah, as if I don't know about your trips to town," she teases, cutting her eyes at him and giving him a scan of approval as he catches the basket. "And besides, everything you eat that I cook is authentic Water Tribe food, because I'm the one that cooks it..."

She does lift a brow and shake her head at his whining, however, as she stretches her arms now free from their burden. "Sokka, they're not all for you," she chides, admitting that she did, in part, make them with him in mind. "This festival is to bring people together. You know, like the tribe feasts we used to have back home when we were kids."

How could she know about those trips across town? Has she been following him? Has she been sniffing him for sea prune breath after he falls asleep? Is she some sort of Fire Nation spy suddenly? All of these crazy ideas come to mind as Sokka tries to figure out just how it is she knows. "You've been stalking me, haven't you?" he says faux-accusingly as he points his finger at her and just looks at her without any amusement. In truth, he's actually in part being funny, but at the same point.. there's no way she should have gotten that. But anyway...

"Yeah, I guess I can deal with that sort of authentic Water Tribe food. It at least reminds me of home." To be honest, it is better, but of course he's not going to say that.

"I know how the festival works, Katara," he says rolling his eyes. Well technically he did, but in fairness he wanted to convenienly forget. "Peace and love and friendship and bonding and blah blah blah. If it changes anything tomorrow, colour me surprised."
