[EVENT] Bonfire Night

Characters: ALL!
Date: February 21st
Location: Various.
Situation: It’s cold. Time to cuddle up and make bonfires for the warmth.
Warnings/Rating: Add warnings as needed.

As night falls the city’s lights take something of a unique turn. Instead of being lit by millions of paper lanterns, Keeliai is tonight lit by the flames and warmth of dozens if not hundreds of fires. Some of them are small, not much more than warming hearths in a barrel on a street, but others encompass squares and boulevards.

The fire lighting procession winds through the city’s streets, beginning at the first bonfire in Fire Sector. By the time full night has arrived, that procession is a snake illuminated by dozens of torches, parting from the main parade to light smaller fires in smaller streets. It ends, finally, in Central, in the Courtyard of Public Opinion, whose bonfire is second only to the initiating one in Fire Sector.

In some areas an exchange of goods arises, mostly in terms of woollens and other warm clothes and blankets. Though food is considered a public resource on this occasion, bartering small knickknacks, songs, stories and even other woollen items is not uncommon an exchange.

Meals are shared among kedan and Foreigners, commoners and emissaries--primarily stews, soups and other foods easily baked in the coals of the fires. Everyone brings food, and what isn’t contributed to the pot is nevertheless shared around after preparation. Although some bonfires are markedly wealthier than others, food and shelter is spread around to make sure everyone is safe and warm. No one goes cold and alone on this night.

"Why do I need to be plotting something?" Skulduggery asked innocently. "I find sitting beside bonfires and knitting socks to be the grounds for exceptionally scintillating conversation." He paused. "Oh, I'm sorry. Watching someone else knit socks. I'm glad to hear building the garage isn't impossible. What resources would you need?"

"Need to?" Anton lifted an eyebrow at him. "Naturally, you don't need to. You do, however, only ask such leading questions when you choose to be plotting something. What are you up to, Skulduggery?" He paused for a moment to turn things over. "From whom are you stealing the Bentley?"

It seemed obvious, after a bit of thought. A garage needed a car to put into it, and Skulduggery did love his Bentley. He won't have had it after their return from the Dreaming, of course, and the fact that Skulduggery was choosing to be so oblique indicated a plan of which he was uncertain of Anton's approval.

It was very annoying, speaking to someone who knew Skulduggery so well. Seeing as it was Anton, Skulduggery hadn't been trying very hard to hide anything to begin with; but even so. Annoying.

"Yunxu," he admitted. "Though to be fair, I'm not the one stealing her from him. To be even fairer, the person who is stealing her from him isn't exactly stealing. But, seeing as Yunxu doesn't seem to have any standard sense of honour, we can probably count on some retaliation."

"You've bribed China into helping you." Really, who else in the city would Skulduggery go to for help aside from Anton himself? Possibly Wreath, though Wreath had been something of a hermit of late. China was by far more likely to have ingratiated herself with the Snakes.

"I am not responsible for the car while it is located outside the Hotel during the course of construction," he warned, "and I would like to know how you intend to finance the renovation."

At least partly. It was at Skulduggery's request, after all.

"I didn't bribe," Skulduggery said defensively. "I asked."

Anton wouldn't immediately think of that, of course, since at his point in the timeline China was still nothing more than an unwilling ally. In fact, he'd probably assume after the correction that Skulduggery had blackmailed her, and quite frankly, Skulduggery wouldn't mind letting that assumption stand.

"That's easy," he answered. "I have quite a bit saved up. I don't eat, remember? It should cover the majority of expenses. Anything it doesn't cover I'll happily pay back later."

"I'm sure you did." Where Skulduggery was concerned, those lines could blur quite well. Bribery, blackmail, request--where China was concerned, any 'request' included one of the formers, regardless of which side was using it.

"I'll add it to your tab," said Anton calmly. It wasn't a bad idea, however. An area where some of the engineers at the Hotel could have a workspace ... hm. It could work. "You shan't need to pay for all of it. Simply some." Hiring out storage and work areas would pay for the rest.

"Excellent," said Skulduggery, all good cheer restored. He watched Anton knit the socks for a few moments longer, and then abruptly turned to leave the bonfire for a different, more exciting bonfire. "Have a good night."
