[EVENT] Bonfire Night

Characters: ALL!
Date: February 21st
Location: Various.
Situation: It’s cold. Time to cuddle up and make bonfires for the warmth.
Warnings/Rating: Add warnings as needed.

As night falls the city’s lights take something of a unique turn. Instead of being lit by millions of paper lanterns, Keeliai is tonight lit by the flames and warmth of dozens if not hundreds of fires. Some of them are small, not much more than warming hearths in a barrel on a street, but others encompass squares and boulevards.

The fire lighting procession winds through the city’s streets, beginning at the first bonfire in Fire Sector. By the time full night has arrived, that procession is a snake illuminated by dozens of torches, parting from the main parade to light smaller fires in smaller streets. It ends, finally, in Central, in the Courtyard of Public Opinion, whose bonfire is second only to the initiating one in Fire Sector.

In some areas an exchange of goods arises, mostly in terms of woollens and other warm clothes and blankets. Though food is considered a public resource on this occasion, bartering small knickknacks, songs, stories and even other woollen items is not uncommon an exchange.

Meals are shared among kedan and Foreigners, commoners and emissaries--primarily stews, soups and other foods easily baked in the coals of the fires. Everyone brings food, and what isn’t contributed to the pot is nevertheless shared around after preparation. Although some bonfires are markedly wealthier than others, food and shelter is spread around to make sure everyone is safe and warm. No one goes cold and alone on this night.

That question seemed to baffle Lin, because he stopped and blinked and his brow furrowed. "I d- don't know. All kedan can d- do it from birth, but lots d- don't tr- train it much. I never heard of non-kedan with ke."

He glanced behind himself nervously, his gaze sweeping the darkness past the circle of fire until he found Heojin a distance from where he'd been. "I shouldn't be t- talking. I've gotta get back."

Wan's eyes followed Lin's and he hesitated a moment before asking, "Can I come with you? I'd like to speak to Heojin if I can. About helping with the farms. Would that be alright?"

"It's a free city," said Lin, turning away. "Whatever T- Tu Yunxu likes t- to th- think." He went back to where Heojin was dished out stew to an older kedan, quietly taking a station beside Ran. Ran grunted his acknowledgement and Heojin looked up.

"Th- this is--" Lin hesitated. "I d- dunno who th- this is. Foreigner who wants work."

"Wan," he offered in a kind voice. "And I'm not really looking for work. I just want to help with the farms. I know the cold climate has been bad and there's been a lot of heavy icing that's been a problem for the Metalworkers. But have there been any problems with the farms?"

"There have," Heojin acknowledged, regarding Wan with an impassive eye but thoughtful gaze. "The Bresilykian greenhouses have saved many, but the ice has prevented us from building more."

"S- suuure, givin' away tr- trade secrets," Lin mumbled, but it seemed more about of a propensity to grumble than any real ire, and Heojin ignored it accordingly.

"Precisely what skills do you intend to offer?" he asked instead.
raavashing: (Neutral: Come on Come on)

"I can move water," he said simply, smiling only out of relief that Heojin was willing to speak to him and see what he could offer. "The same as I can move fire, air, and earth. I can remove a lot more ice than most people can. The metalworker's projects are great, but I'd rather help make sure there's plenty of food for everyone. A bad winter and everyone suffers."

"Th- they use ke," Lin added helpfully.

They were the sorts of skills one only heard in legends, as with most Foreigners, but at least they made sense. "Are there other Foreigners with skills such as yours?" Heojin asked.
raavashing: (smile: Said goodbye)

[personal profile] raavashing 2015-03-03 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
He nodded. It wasn't like any of the other benders hid their power, so he didn't feel it was wrong to share this.

"Yes, there's another who can move all four, one who can move water, and two who can move fire" he explained easily. He had yet to meet Toph so he wasn't aware of her presence yet to count her.

"It's really b- beautiful," said Lin, "but th- there's way t- too many farms and th- they're all in a layout. D- do we wanna mess with th- that by having--" He waved a hand vaguely at Wan. "--t- tossing powers everywhere? Foreigners aren't kn- known for consulting anyone before th- they go off." He side-eyed Wan balefully.

"Have you an opinion, Ran?" Heojin asked his other guard without glancing away from Wan.

A grunt was the answer. "If they want to work, put them to work with an overseer to make sure they know what we're doing. If they mess up, kick 'em back to the city. Either way, there's not much they can do that would make things worse right now."

"You can be at th- the t- top of th- the overseer list," Lin grumbled, while Heojin considered, and then finally nodded.

"The Woodsmen are grateful to accept your aid," he said to Wan. "If those others of like skills would be willing to help for a similar wage, once established, please direct them to us also."

"Anyone listening t- to Lin, here?"

"Lin needs to shove a sock in his mouth," said Ran.
raavashing: (smile: of the mess that we made)

"Thank you," Wan grinned brightly. "And I don't need to be paid. The others might want to be, but I'm not looking for a job."

He bowed politely to Heojin, left hand over his right fist, and then shifted his attention to Lin, where he bowed his head, "I won't use my power of the elements on the fields without direction. I promise. I won't just toss them around."

Lin only grumbled wordlessly, but without any heat, and in the end shrugged as if he wasn't sure how to handle the self-effacing deference.

"I would not have it said the Woodsmen are lacking as hosts," said Heojin. "If not juulan, then let us at least feed and house you during your time in our fields."

Wan straightened up and bowed his head to Heojin in acknowledgement, "Food would be welcome. But I have a place to sleep in the old Palace gardens. It's not much, but it's enough for me."

Though Wan may not expect it, his words made all three of the Woodsmen's demeanors shift, from something fairly relaxed to something a little tense. Ran actually took his gaze from their surroundings to look at Wan, and in general they seemed to be less amiable than they had been.

"I ... see," said Heojin at last. "We have of course been brokering a deal for the land, but I did not realise some had already, ah, laid claim."

"You've been squatting in the palace," Ran said flatly.

"What d- do we care about the palace?" Lin pointed out.

"It's the palace. It's also a graveyard. Would you want people tramping and living all over the place where your family-members suffered and died as if it meant nothing?" Ran shook his head. "And I thought you were exaggerating about Foreigners going around doing their own thing without considering anyone around them. Tch."

"D- didn't say it wasn't s- st- stupid," said Lin, "just like th- the--" He waved a hand toward the fire. "But we d- don't care about the palace. Th- that's why it's being demolished."

"That's not the point," Ran growled. "It's being demolished with consideration and with appropriate ceremony. He's been living there before the deal was finalised without even asking."

Wan's eyebrow shot up at that. As far as he knew, Gene had been speaking to people about the deal and specifically included preserving the Palace Gardens as part of it. Wan had insisted on both them and any areas that might still need to be spiritually cleansed being left alone.

"Actually," he started slowly, trying to keep his tone even and polite, "You're right. I have been squatting there. But I was told by those speaking with you and the others that it was understood the gardens were wanting to be claimed by one of us and that it was considered... uh, 'acceptable terms'. The gardens were my request. As was the sealing off of the places that are still spiritually dangerous to your people until they can be cleansed."

Wan put a hand on his hip and met Heojin's eyes, "I thought it would be acceptable because other kedan had already stripped it down and abandoned it long before any of us returned from our time in the Dreaming. There was no care put into preserving anything.

"I apologize for my presumption. If you, or anyone else, care to look into it, you'll find that I haven't interfered with any other part of the palace while staying there. I've left it alone. All I do is sleep in the gardens at the end of the day."

"The gardens are a public resource," Ran started furiously.

"But it is true they are being preserved," Heojin cut in without seeming like he was cutting Ran off any more than simply adding clarification. "I do not recall any stipulation that they are owned by any one person, but they are being preserved, and have always been one of those things that would be." At least as far as the Woodsmen were concerned, though the other families might not care nearly so much about it.

He met Wan's gaze. "We are not speaking of other kedan," he said. "We are speaking of us. The Woodsmen have not had access to the palace since before the invasion. We were not able to object to what the Metalworkers did with it. They may like to claim the darkness in our past does not exist, but not all of us are like-minded. To assume so is, on your part, further evidence of Lin's concern that you seek your own gratification without regard for what kedan may believe or contribute. I will not rescind my previous offer; I will not have it said the Woodsmen are whimsical in their dealings. But your assurances now mean very little. If you wish to prove you can be considerate of kedanese beliefs and activities, you will have to prove so in action."

Someone would go and look into it, and their judgement might change perception of Wan either way. But until that judgement was had, there wasn't ground to say anything about the assertion in any direction.

Wan remained quiet for a time, considering the man's words. He had made the same assumptions against the kedan as a whole that the kedan in general had made against the foreigners as a whole. He was as much in the wrong as he felt they were, but it was he who had to prove himself in this place, not them. He could not defend himself further, everything Heojin said was true.

He offered another bow, "My only desire for the gardens is that they are preserved as they are. I felt that claiming them would be the easiest way to ensure that. As long as they are not destroyed and left as they are, I do not care who claims ownership. I will report to whomever will be my overseer in the fields in the morning. Thank you for this opportunity."

Ran was scowling. Lin was looking up at the sky and murmuring something that has wisps of a tune in it, shifting uneasily from foot to foot. As much as he'd been looking for excuses to be crotchety, actually getting into ill-willed arguments obviously hadn't been his intention.

But Heojin held Wan's gaze and inclined his head in acknowledgement. "May your fields remain fertile, Wan of the Foreigners."

"And yours as well," he answered, taking three steps backwards before turning his back and leaving. He had much to think about.
