[EVENT] Bonfire Night

Characters: ALL!
Date: February 21st
Location: Various.
Situation: It’s cold. Time to cuddle up and make bonfires for the warmth.
Warnings/Rating: Add warnings as needed.

As night falls the city’s lights take something of a unique turn. Instead of being lit by millions of paper lanterns, Keeliai is tonight lit by the flames and warmth of dozens if not hundreds of fires. Some of them are small, not much more than warming hearths in a barrel on a street, but others encompass squares and boulevards.

The fire lighting procession winds through the city’s streets, beginning at the first bonfire in Fire Sector. By the time full night has arrived, that procession is a snake illuminated by dozens of torches, parting from the main parade to light smaller fires in smaller streets. It ends, finally, in Central, in the Courtyard of Public Opinion, whose bonfire is second only to the initiating one in Fire Sector.

In some areas an exchange of goods arises, mostly in terms of woollens and other warm clothes and blankets. Though food is considered a public resource on this occasion, bartering small knickknacks, songs, stories and even other woollen items is not uncommon an exchange.

Meals are shared among kedan and Foreigners, commoners and emissaries--primarily stews, soups and other foods easily baked in the coals of the fires. Everyone brings food, and what isn’t contributed to the pot is nevertheless shared around after preparation. Although some bonfires are markedly wealthier than others, food and shelter is spread around to make sure everyone is safe and warm. No one goes cold and alone on this night.

Milyn clicked her tongue against the roof of her mouth sympathetically, reaching into her shoulder bag to pull out one of the smaller treat sacks. Rather than pull any candies from it however, she just offered the whole bag to Mike. "I rather think you'll appreciate the warmth rather than any side effects," she said. "They're not dangerous, just a little shiny. This must be such rough weather on you, dear."

Mike just blinks in confusion even has he's accepting the treat sack.

"But...I don't, I don't have enough for this many."

The kedan woman laughed a little, but it was kindly. "Oh, they don't cost anything," she assured him. "I made them specially for tonight, I can't have everyone getting cold and having to miss out on the festivities. Honestly after last year -- ah, well I suppose that would be two years ago! -- you see, our winters never used to be so unpredictable, and I thought these would be a marvelous back up. So I started fussing with the formula back then, and so when the temperature dropped again, I thought to myself, if that's not a sign to pull out that work and get moving on it, nothing is!"

As he listens, Mike opens the pouch and takes out a candy. He marvels at it for a moment before popping it into his mouth...and shivering slightly. Then he just sighs contentedly.
Warmer. So much warmer. Yes. Good.

"I'm very glad you did."

The multiple layers of clothes he's wearing do a lot, but the candy just fully takes the edge off the cold, and he's oh so thankful for that.

"Is there anything I can do to repay you? My dad kind of drilled it into our head that kindness always needs repaying."

Milyn understood the desire to repay things that didn't technically need it, so she thought about the request for a moment.

"Your father sounds like a very wise man. Would you come by my shop sometime, and tell me about him? I think, it would be nice to know what sort of things a father would teach to his children."
michaeljangelo: (Skeptical)

He blinks at her, his reaction time improved greatly thanks to the candy.

"Yooooou want me to come by and tell you stories about my dad? That's...what you want as repayment?"

Blink. Blink-blink.

"I mean, I can totally do that, it just seems. Okay. Yeah. Sure. Okay."

"Is it too silly a thing?" Milyn asks, embarrassed. "You can tell me if it is. My mother and father died when I was quite young, you see, my grandfather took me in. I suppose I am just being wishful, a little bit..."
