[OPEN] Midwinter Masquerade

Characters: EVERYONE
Date: Forward-dated to Friday, December 21st
Location: Water Sector
Situation: Midwinter Masquerade!
Warnings/Rating: None in the entry, please tag your threads accordingly.

It's well into the evening of the Longest Night when guests begin to arrive at the Midwinter Masquerade. The building where it is held, a large and elegant building, sits in the Water sector at the edge of a canal, allowing attendees to arrive by foot, boat, and bicycle drawn carts.

Upon approaching the main entrance, guests are greeted by kedan servers who have been contracted for the event. Dressed in white and silver as Winter spirits and snowy creatures, they greet the guests, stow away their coats, cloaks, and other outerwear, and bid them Joy on the Longest Night.

The theme of their costumes becomes quickly apparent upon entering the main room, for Favrielle has put all of her designing genius toward transforming the it into a wintery palace. Pale white drapes hang over the walls of the room and beneath the ceiling, accented with silvery ribbons to simulate icicles. Indeed, most things in the hall are in whites and silvers. The tables are adorned in white table cloths, and matching napkins hold polished silverware within, tied shut with ribbon.

A set of musicians sit to the side of the dance floor, playing quietly as the guests arrive. The stringed instruments produce sweet sounds of a more classical style that adds to the formality of the occasion and sets the mood for the evening. Indeed, it does little more than that for the first part of the evening, by Favrielle's reckoning, is best spent enjoying the arrival of those in costume. After all, with so many masked it's as much an entertainment to see who is dressed in what, as it is to try and guess their identity.

The more observant or socially networked individual might also notice that while most guests are indeed foreigners, there are a few kedan in attendance as well. Invited by Favrielle herself, these kedan are for the most part friends and associates from their shared industry, as well as some few acquaintances she's made in the Fire sector's red light district. In the tradition of the Night Court however, it is not a night of business dealings, even those from the latter group.

As for the hostess herself, she enters only when it seems as if most other guests are present...

[ooc: Due to RL stuff this is going up early! This should give everyone more time to tag in. The pageant beginning will go up now, however the end will go up on the 21st as planned!]

He is apparently a charmer. [Though it never worked on her, so there's a slightly amused eyebrow quirk and half an eyeroll.]

It's fun and a learning experience. Have you been at it a while?
controlledvariable: (PB >> I'm having fun)

[personal profile] controlledvariable 2012-12-29 01:47 pm (UTC)(link)
[Steph grins, more than a little cheeky and entirely unapolgetic] Apparetly. [By that she quite clearly means "definitely".]

Tonight? For about an hour or two. Overall? I had my first proper lesson when I was about sixteen, but I never really got to do much dancing aside from that.

[personal profile] shootingshields 2012-12-29 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
[She shakes her head, amused by Steph more than the content of the conversation.] That sort's never been my type. [Clearly.]

[Peggy chuckles a little.]
I did mean tonight, but actual lessons is a bit more than I had. I sort of learned on my own. I used to drag friends out all the time.
controlledvariable: (PB >> you're gone away but)

[personal profile] controlledvariable 2013-01-01 09:15 am (UTC)(link)
[Now her grin is definitely cheeky] I don't really have a type. [She just likes boys.]

I'm afraid to say dancing like this has gone out of style if you're not at a very fancy gala or something. [Which is why Alfred taught most of the Bats how to ballroom dance.]

[personal profile] shootingshields 2013-01-02 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
[She laughs.] As long as you're happy, I think that's most important.

[A quick glance around.] Oh, it's not the only sort of dancing I enjoy. I'm quite fond of more fast pace things, as well.

controlledvariable: (civvies -- this isn't going as planned)

[personal profile] controlledvariable 2013-01-03 12:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm always happy. [she grins; Peggy might not really get the entirety of the joke, since she doesn't know how a lot of people see Steph back home (she's not as cheerfully bubbly as she pretends to be).]

Well, you might have better luck finding facce pace things, but partner dancing in general isn't all that popular anymore.

[alas!

Or maybe Steph just spent too much time in clubs]

[personal profile] shootingshields 2013-01-04 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
At the risk of darkening the conversation, I'd have to say not not everyone is happy all the time. [It's still said lightly, even if she means it.]

That's a bit unfortunate. [Even if she can appreciate change and group dancing.] Though not immediately horrible to hear. What is popular then?
controlledvariable: (PB >> come out to play)

[personal profile] controlledvariable 2013-01-05 07:01 am (UTC)(link)
If she was here, I'd introduce you to my friend, Megan. She might disprove that theory. [Steph knows that M'gann isn't happy all that time, but it's a damn near thing.]

Um... I'm actually not sure how to describe it. In a club it tends to just be everyone pressed up against each other but doing their own thing.

[personal profile] shootingshields 2013-01-05 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I suppose there are exceptions to every rule.

[Peggy's not sure she quite has the mental picture, but it's kind of there.] Interesting, to say the least.
controlledvariable: (Civvies -- Are you sure about that?)

[personal profile] controlledvariable 2013-01-10 08:44 am (UTC)(link)
They're usually my favourite. [the exceptions, because people who don't follow rules are the most fun.]

I'll give you a demonstration some time. [Maybe she'll rope Steve into being a volunteer to dirty dance with, the look on his face would be worth a million dollars.] Until then, maybe I can be a dancing partner who you don't have to teach too much?

[yes she's asking Peggy to dance, what of it.]
shootingshields: (pic#4913272)

[personal profile] shootingshields 2013-01-12 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a little partial to them myself.

[There's something in the way Steph offers the first demonstration that strikes Peggy a little mischievous.]

[But she grins at the second offer.] I should warn you, I have a tendency to lead.

[And that's a yes!]
controlledvariable: (PB >> a way to do it just right)

[personal profile] controlledvariable 2013-01-13 10:10 am (UTC)(link)
That doesn't surprise me at all.

[Whether she's responding to the first or second comment will remain a mystery forever. She steps closer, grinning a little as she puts a hand on Peggy's shoulder, holding out her other hand for Peggy to take so obviously she has no problem with letting the other woman lead.]

I think the music's fast enough for a quickstep? [She's mostly just been waltzing, because it's simple and easier to teach, but she figures she might as well have a bit more fun with Peggy.]
shootingshields: (pic#1494448)

[personal profile] shootingshields 2013-01-14 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
[Though she's used to leading even when being in the so called traditional woman's spot, she immediately rests her hand lightly at Steph's waist and starts moving them in time to the music.]

Apologies if I trip over my own skirt. I'm not used to something so long.

controlledvariable: (civvies -- things are actually going wel)

[personal profile] controlledvariable 2013-01-14 07:46 am (UTC)(link)
[Steph keeps up easily enough, smiling and clearly enjoying herself.]

I promise not to hold it against you. I can't say I'm used to them, either.

[skirts how???]
shootingshields: (pic#1494404)

[personal profile] shootingshields 2013-01-14 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Much appreciated.

[A pause as she spins them.] I prefer mine a lot shorter. But maneuverability is usually the biggest priority.

[Up to the knees is short okok.]
controlledvariable: (civvies -- this isn't going as planned)

[personal profile] controlledvariable 2013-01-16 11:50 am (UTC)(link)
We probably have different definitions of 'short' in this instance. [she laughs as little as they spin.] But yeah, agreed on the maneuverability. I can't remember the last time I actually wore a skirt.

[Aside from... right now, obviously. She wore a dress to her party, but she thinks dresses are different.]
shootingshields: (pic#1494360)

[personal profile] shootingshields 2013-01-17 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Most likely. [She grins, because she's seen some of the fashion here to know.]

They're a bit standard uniformly, unless in a combat situation or training. I don't mind them, but I have to like them. Though I'm glad to see trousers are more common for women beyond work related requirements.

[Because damn they were more useful at times.]
controlledvariable: (civvies -- I dare you)

[personal profile] controlledvariable 2013-01-17 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
It'd probably scandalize the boys. [by which she means Steve. She's not sure if Bucky really gets scandalized, considering some of the things she's discussed with him]

I can't imagine having to wear skirts during a war. [Especially when the uniform skrits tended toward pencil skirts, which Steph finds restricting] Being able to wear trousers definitely makes life easier.
shootingshields: (pic#1494439)

[personal profile] shootingshields 2013-01-17 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
Scandalize or titillate? [Because she can't imagine most men being scandalized by it. Until the Steve implication gets picked up on, and she smiles a bit.] Maybe fluster some of them. I find it's usually the elderly more set in their ways.

Planning and at base usually meant a skirt. But not out in the field, unless it was the sort of mission that needed it. [You know like playing maid in Red Skull's mansion.]
controlledvariable: (PB >> a way to do it just right)

[personal profile] controlledvariable 2013-01-17 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
Titillate works, too. [Thank god she never met Howard] Although flustering is good, but sometimes it's too much fun. [aka Steve is so easy to fluster she literally has no self control about it]

What if you needed to kick someone the face while on base? [IT MIGHT HAPPEN. Not that she doubts Peggy's ability to manage such tasks while wearing a skirt]
shootingshields: (pic#1928899)

[personal profile] shootingshields 2013-01-18 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
It's a lot easier with some than others. [She understands this so well ok trying to get a flustered reaction out of Steve is up there in her favorite hobbies alongside misandry and guns.]

I've perfected that. [She's not even joking.] But I do usually prefer punching.

[Whoops another small spin in time with the music.]
controlledvariable: (PB >> when it's dead)

[personal profile] controlledvariable 2013-01-18 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
It's too easy with Steve. [Look she's just gonna go ahead and say what they're both thinking] I don't think I've ever seen someone who blushes quite so much. [and looks so adorable when he does but she'll keep that thought to herself]

You're my hero. [Not even kidding.

And the spin makes her grin even more.]
shootingshields: (pic#1494449)

[personal profile] shootingshields 2013-01-18 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
[She grins, entirely knowing and affectionately amused.] It's part of his charm. Though he doesn't always.

[Steph is probably one of the only people she'd actually talk about her relationship with Steve in some capacity with.]

[But the hero remark is flattering.]
Someone has to do it.
controlledvariable: (PB >> I'm having fun)

[personal profile] controlledvariable 2013-01-18 08:12 am (UTC)(link)
Oh? [her eyebrows go up, her smile turning into a bit of a smirk.] I suppose it'd get boring if you couldn't get anywhere without him blushing.

[Steph is terrible and has zero regrets]

I couldn't have picked anyone better. [As much as she's still joking around, there's genuine fondness in her tone and smile; she does like Peggy a lot.]

shootingshields: (pic#4913272)

[personal profile] shootingshields 2013-01-19 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
[Steph why. Peggy rolls her eyes.] Don't worry, I'm never bored.

[And that's... probably the last she'll say on the matter SHE CAN'T BELIEVE SHE EVEN SAID THAT.]

[But even if they are half joking about it, she can hear the honesty in Steph's voice, and her return smile is absolutely genuine.]
Far be it from me to disappoint you. Or myself.

[She'd be her own hero, if she had to.]
