This year there's no sudden explosion to mark the influx of people. The weather is still faintly snowy, crisp and chill, and though there are days when the sun breaks through the clouds it doesn't do much to make things genuinely warmer.

Much like light slipping between the clouds, other Foreigners start slipping into the city, here and there. By this time the kedan and the anchored Foreigners know more than well enough what a Foreigner with no soul gem means, and by the time the third drifter has shown up it's considered sign enough for enthusiastic miniature pop-up markets to spring up where the snow is melting away, much like flowers.

Cheerful, profit-seeking flowers.

All the same, with the recent collaborations between Foreigners and kedan, the kedan are much more willing to look kindly on the newcomers-- at least so long as they don't cause too much trouble.

There's some speculation about what might be causing it -- the phenomenon comes earlier than it has before, not quite into spring yet -- but once objects start appearing and disappearing, it's safe to say the Dreaming can be blamed. As unpredictable as the Dreaming can be, this makes more than a few people relax-- at least it's a known unpredictability. The items that vanish are always of personal value, regardless of monetary worth, and they usually reappear later. And some items simply appear. Whether or not they'll stay forever remains to be seen, but it's always things with some emotional attachment, often which were on the mind or in conversation recently.

And often, the feeling of being watched, or that you've seen this thing before, no matter if it's impossible.

"No, but it seems easy enough to understand. Personally, I find the concept of magic to be too nebulous to be very useful. It's more of a label of exclusion than inclusion."

Nita kept up what she'd been doing, making a wry expression.

"Helps when it's defined, given explicit variables. And a solid purpose."

Besides a couple of blinking lights, Valkyr's face had no moving parts or even distinguishing features. It was impossible to read her. "You're eventually going somewhere with this, right?" She hadn't really answer the question yet in any meaningful way.

Nita sighed.

"Yeah; sorry for being vague - in the world I'm from, wizards being 'out' can be lethal for the wizard... when we're at home, to say the least."

Let alone what happened on the High Road.

"But yeah: I'm a wizard, in service of Life. And if I can keep being one here, then so much the better."

"Ah." Bisi was a very private person, and she didn't tend to share things about herself but... well, it seemed like Nita was sharing something just as private and difficult. "I never had the choice of being 'out.' We couldn't control our abilities when they first manifested, so they isolated us. Experimented on us." Weaponized us.

Nita was thankful for that, actually - it meant Bisi wasn't dismissing it out of hand.

"That's- that's horrible."

Nita knew she was lucky in being able to be 'out' to her family and close friends, to have a safety net, but to be in a world where that wasn't an option...

"I'm glad you don't have to go back to that."

She smiled to herself, even if Nita couldn't see it. At the... she didn't know. Humor of the situation? "My world is different now. That was... centuries ago. And I am going back, eventually. Everyone goes back. Some sooner than others. But I have to go back. If I'm not the one to fix the solar system, who is?"

"Good."

Though mentally Nita chided herself for assuming the immediacy of Bisi's position.

"... Well, I guess you wouldn't find out if you didn't go back, huh?"

"I guess that's not quite true. The healer Milyn has a potion- well, maybe not, with her getting arrested." That was troublesome.

Nita rose both eyebrows, interest piqued.

For two reasons, actually.

"Arrested? For what? And- does that mean there's a potion that can let you see your future?"

Nita wasn't certain which question was more important in the grand scheme of things - though being arrested probably came first.

"Yes-" to both. "She was arrested for... it's complicated, and from well before I came here. Have you heard anything of Malicant?"

Nita put down what was in her hands, giving Bisi her full attention.

"Some, but probably not nearly enough. How much have you been able to figure out?"

[ten_zero]

"There's nothing to figure out so much as piece together. No one, Kedan or foreigner alike, are particularly anxious to share. "Malicant was an alien being that controlled the Kedan through strange means, partially through a substance called Dust, developed by a man named Danseng. [ Sp? ] And as we very recently discovered, aided by the healer Milyn. She claims her intentions were noble, and I believer her, but..." She trailed off. Intentions didn't always mean a lot.

"With even that much, it's not hard to see why they're hesitant," Nita replied.

Poisoning - well, drugging, but those were more-or-less the same thing, in some ways - must have taken some reasoning to seem worthwhile to a healer.

"She didn't come up with the idea, then?" Maybe she just didn't like her own peoples' nature or something, though that was a problem all its own...

"I think it's less that she didn't come up with the idea and more that her idea was for a slightly different drug with a significantly different purpose, but both were corrupted." "It seems the KPD were also objecting to some voluntary experiments she was doing recently in an attempt to cure it, too."

Now that changed things a bit - at least in regards to Milyn's character.

"Was it just that she was doing experiments, or were they objecting to something else?"

She might have to ask Conan about some of this stuff.

"I'm not... entirely sure. I've been... preoccupied of late." She's not going to explain why she hasn't been following up on Milyn's arrest because she's been too lovesick over a boy. That is definitely not happening right now. "But I'll be looking into it soon, I think."

Nita would actually be able to sympathise if Bisi did admit it - she's had troubles like that herself.

"Some things we can't help," Nita replied, shrugging.

"But it's good you are looking into it. I'll try and do it, too, while I'm around."

Valkyr nods. "We should probably get back to work. There's still a lot to do."
