[Open Log] Don't you Worry 'bout a thing

Characters: Members of the Foreigners' Guild
Date: Beginning of May
Location: Welcome Center
Situation: Trying to figure out just how this thing is going to work
Warnings/Rating: none to start; will update if needed

Today, the Center is...not quite closed, because it was never closed, but the sign out front was a little more specific than usual: indicating that those who had chosen to align themselves with the Foreigners' Guild to stop by at their convenience for a group discussion. Word of mouth was the primary means of getting the information out, but just in case, Zatanna was nearby with a checklist making sure to get names of not only who showed up, but of any known members who did not. So that they could be contacted at a later time and kept in the loop.

For her part, the 19-year-old was sitting casually in her favorite armchair by the fireplace (though currently lit, was emitting very little heat, indicating a more magical nature. For ambiance, mainly) and not-quite-facilitating the entire process. Her body language gave little indication of wanting to step forward as official leader, although she was ready with answers for any who may have had relevant questions.

[[ooc: Characters are encouraged to make their own top levels for open-ended discussion of the state of the Guild; if any of them want to talk to Zatanna specifically, indicate in the subject level and she'll come around.]]

"I suppose, since the organization of our own governance is up to us, how difficult it becomes is also up to us," Devin posed. "It's an interesting system they've set up, these Guilds. Very Italian Renaissance, with city-states and whatnot. Do you think it'll last?"

For several seconds, Devin just looked at Zatanna, expressionless. And then he smiled, a small and resigned little thing.

"It's good that you still have that kind of optimism," Devin told her. "That kind of... faith." He didn't mean it in the religious sense, of course. "The city could use some real stability, from what I understand, so I do hope you're right. Now, all we need to do is eradicate our little rat problem, and things might even turn peachy."

"Fair enough. You'd know better than I would, in any case." He had, after all, only been here a month.

Devin tilted his head, intrigued by the sarcasm. "Seeing as it's recently become my job to find them, hopefully quite a lot, or whatever the equivalent is for cultists. Not a fan of understatement?"

"I wouldn't be offended if it was me," he returned, wry. "Demons do have a tendency to be pains in the ass, wherever they are and whatever their status. As aggravating as it was to be brought here, it seems the reason for that does, in fact, persist in the form of these terrorists. I can understand being fatigued by it all."

Devin was very glad to have no idea; if he'd been here before, he'd be even more unhappy about the whole situation.

The vampire gave her a slightly bemused look. "Is it common where you come from to send children to fight evil-doers? That seems like spectacularly bad guardianship."

Devin, you got started when you were eleven, don't judge. He knew they probably had to be quite capable to do what she was describing, and that there were quite a few young people here with advanced abilities, but his argument stood. Sending children to fight battles was wrong, in his opinion.

"It does," Devin allowed, "but the part of the brain involved with judgement and making good decisions doesn't mature until a person is in their mid-twenties, most of the time. So, it's heroic, but it can also be seen as stupid, or at the very least ill-informed." Which was not to say that Zatanna was stupid, but that she may have done some stupid things. There was a difference there. "Your father, I imagine, was simply being protective, however. I've heard parents tend to get that way about their children."

Not that he would know.
