Characters: Spencer Reid and open.
Date: From April 5th-14th.
Location: Various locations in Keeliai and Atam.
Situation: Reid does SCIENCE!! And other things. There will be some specific threadstarters and some general ones.
Warnings/Ratings: Excessive tldr?
Other: prose or actionspam are both fine by me. Also if you could fill out my permissions post that would be awesome. Reid is a behavioural analyst with the FBI and he tends to use body language and linguistic cues to 'profile' other characters. Obviously this is an ability that tends towards 'hugely infomoddy' so I like to keep things above the board whenever possible.

[His survival instincts have their ups and downs. Certain things-- psychopaths with guns, for instance, he always seems to underestimate. He sees the good in people. He hopes for it, and sometimes that hope ends up misplaced.

It doesn't mean he's going to stop hoping. But it does-- make it a little harder than it used to be. He doesn't even know when he tripped over the line from optimist to realist, just that it happened at some point and he doesn't think he can ever go back.

But when it comes to being followed? He's got an almost eerie sixth sense about it. Maybe it's because people used to shadow him around school before they stuffed him into lockers. Either way, the fact that someone's trailing after him doesn't go unnoticed.

Of course, he has no way of knowing how long it's been. The only thing that even confirms it is the fact that he catches a glimpse of a shadow on the ground when he passes beside an alleyway.

He has no idea why anyone would follow him. The kedan don't run around on rooftops, and he doubts he's interesting enough to any of the foreigners to warrant following. Which--

Leaves Steph?

He ducks into the next alley, shields his eyes with one hand (unnecessary, it's dark) and looks up to see if he can spot her a second time. Maybe he's just paranoid.]

[...Oops.

Most people, she's found, don't just duck into alleyways and look up at the rooftops for no reason, so she figures that either Spencer is expecting someone, or he spotted her. And the latter seems much more likely.

She pauses in the shadows at the edge of the roof, but figures that not showing herself would probably worry him, if he thinks someone's following him, so a moment later she's hopping over the edge. It's a simple matter of slower her descent on window sills and balconies, so that when she does hit the ground, landing in a crouch, she doesn't break an ankle. Her cape still kind of billows dramatically, but that's a design flaw.]

Sorry. Hi.

[He blinks a few times, and then simply assumes a slightly bemused expression.]

Hi, um--

[He takes in her costume - it's the first time he's actually seen it, and by the symbol on her chest, makes an educated guess.]

Bat...woman?

[She straightens up, idly fixing her utility belt until it's sitting right.]

Girl, but close. Batwoman's a bit older than me.

[Though Steph is, admittedly, starting to feel like she's growing out of the "girl", even if Babs was still Batgirl at an older age than her.

She also feels like she should say something about how she defintely wasn't stalking him, but isn't sure how to make it sound not-creepy.]

And you're [tinypause] following me?

[His voice is a tiny bit high-pitched. Stephanie, why are you following him he's a grown man with a gun. A gun, Steph.]

Um. [The sheepish look on her face is probably all the answer he needs, but she quickly adds:] I didn't like - set out to follow you or anything, I just saw you walking home and with the things the way they are with the kedan, I wanted to make sure you got to your suite without any trouble. [a beat] Sorry. It's kind of a vigilante thing, I didn't mean anything by it.

[That... all came out in a bit of a rush, and then she goes back to looking sheepish, letting her cape fall around her shoulders to kind of hide herself.]

No, it's-- I mean, it's fine. I appreciate the concern.

[He sort of... awkwardly pulls his jacket down over his gun.]

Um, but you do know I'm a trained FBI agent.

[She's quiet for a moment, before shrugging.]

I saw a US Marshall nearly get himself killed by a bunch of kedan, and that was before they started getting angry at us.

[So it's... not Spencer specifically. The kedan are dangerous, especially for people who aren't used to dealing with creatures who can't shapeshift.]

No, it's-- not the skill level, exactly. It's more that... [He frowns a little, not quite certain how to phrase this. Then,]

People in law enforcement accept a certain amount of risk in their day-to-day lives. I'm not saying that I could take on a group of kedan or even, um, one kedan, honestly. It's more that there are other people out there who I'd rather you look out for.

[Oh, that makes sense, but she's still... well.]

This isn't really the type of risk you signed up for, though, is it? [She thinks it's a fair point, considering there's not anything about multiversal travel in the FBI manual.]

Anyway, there's not exactly a shortage of vigilantes. I can take some time out to look out for a friend.

[And he-- smiles at her. It's a twitchy expression, a little uncertain, but genuine enough.]

Well then, thank you. I appreciate it.

No problem. [Her returning smile is bright, and she gestures in the direction of the suites with a sweep of her arm.] Shall we? Or I can head back up if you don't wanna be caught with a vigilante.

[As if this is some terrible thing he might be embarrassed about.]

Are you kidding? I'm pretty sure being pals with a superhero is something every teenage boy dreams about. I'm going to be bragging about this for weeks. I think it's more, do you want to be caught with an FBI agent?

[HE'S JOKING SPENCER REID IS MAKING JOKES THIS IS THE END OF THE KNOWN WORLD RUN.]

[It earns a laugh that's probably bordering on a giggle, not that she'd ever admit it.]

I've been seen with the Police Commissioner back home, I don't think an FBI agent can ruin my reptutation more than it's already been ruined.

Well when you put it like that...

[He tucks his hands around the strap of his messenger bag.]

So. [Awkward moment.] Shall we?

We shall.

[She grins, as if to take the edge of that awkward moment, even though she does feel a little weird just... walking along like a normal person, while dressed as Batgirl.

Which is probably why she hops up to walk along a nearby fence as soon as they get close enough, still within earshot of Spencer.]

How've you been with the whole rationing and everything?

[Partly making conversation, part genuinely want to know if he's doing alright.]

It doesn't bother me. I wish I had more coffee, though.

[He doesn't eat a lot. If it weren't obvious by his stature. Most of his calories come from what he puts in his coffee.]

What about you? The caloric intake of your [what does he call it, exactly? he hopes she understands 'handwave'] must be enormous.

I think that's been one of the most common complaints.

[With so many vigilantes, especially; when she was taking her blood tests she'd half thought coffee might come out.]

It's been-- [Her nose scrunches up, because she's not sure how to say I fucking hate it without sounding like she's whining. It's not that hard, really.

So she shrugs.] I just have to be a bit more careful. I think Andie has more complaints than I do.

[The kitten, though she makes sure said kitten gets fed before she does, and the fish that the Atlanteans have been bringing in helps.]
