[Zelgadis is taking his own measurements. That is, he'd talked to Norrington about the possibility of boats, which meant knowing where the turtle was relative to... well, anything. Since they were out of sight of shore, the best Zel could manage was getting latitude and longitude and seeing if there was a magnetic north or south to get a compass reading from]

[So cue a blue stone-skinned man with a sextant and a clock that might contain actual clockwork looking for a high spot in the Metal Sector to get a sighting on the sun, crowding out Kirk's current observation spot]

[Kirk raises an eyebrow at the guy. Alien? Probably an alien. Nothing Kirk's ever seen, but he's probably missed out on a few here and there. And blue dude is pretty much right in his way.

Oblivious? Rude? Both? Kirk has no idea. He clears his throat, stows the tricorder.]

Hey buddy, you mind?

[Kirk actually stares at the alien. Opens his mouth. Closes it. Diplomacy. It's one of those things that every officer of Starfleet is supposed to adhere to. They're extending the hand of friendship across the known galaxy for the betterment of all races. And that's fine. A peacekeeping and humanitarian mission, Pike had called it all those years ago.

But 'peacekeeping' doesn't mean 'putting up with people being rude', something for which he's got a low tolerance for at the best (or worst) of times. Jim presses his index finger against his lips in a gesture designed to remind himself to rein it in, and then he just shakes his head and walks away. There's plenty of other spots to scan.]

[Is this guy actually serious? Kirk stops, a dozen steps away and turns back to face him, forcing the look of mild incredulity off his face. Civility, right. It is definitely a thing.]

It's a big turtle. I've got other places to be.
