The names didn't ring a bell - she knew just about every ship in the Alliance fleet - but in this place, she knew enough to know she probably wouldn't know a lot. So she took his hand, giving it a firm shake. "Jane Shepard, SSV Normandy." At the very least, it was good to be talking to someone who understood the ship name was more important than stupid stuff like where you were born.

"Not a designation I've ever heard. Must be one of those alternate universe things." He wiggles his fingers a little when he said that. He was hardly new to the concept, but damned if it wasn't getting on his nerves with the frequency with which it was popping up all over the place.

"2259 for me. You?"

"2186," she said, raising her eyebrows a little. It was unusual for someone so new to be so flippant about the idea of alternate universes. That definitely piqued her interest. "Earth Systems Alliance."

"United Federation of Planets. Sounds like the same thing in a different box to me."

He lifted his drink in a salute, tossed off the contents.

"A Federation? Interesting. Is it just humans or are other species involved?" Shepard asked curiously. She figured if the alternate realities thing didn't bother him, the idea of aliens probably wouldn't, either.

"There's about a thousand planets involved, roughly eight thousand light years of space. Three of the founding races are non-human." He shrugged. Common knowledge, and she was obviously from an advanced enough civilization that the Prime Directive didn't exactly apply.

"Sounds more like the Citadel Council," Shepard says with a nod. "Inter-species cooperation. The Alliance is just the human government. Kind of funny, how much alike they sound, though." She hesitates a moment, takes a long drink, sighs. "I don't suppose you're dealing with a race of sentient machines trying to wipe out all advanced life in the galaxy?"

"Machines, no. Despotic Romulans, angry bipedal lizards, and the occasional Kligon, yes." He'd face Nero over the Gorn any day, honestly. At least Nero was just one person with one ship, however massive. The Gorn were an entire species who seemed to exist only for one purpose, one single and resolute purpose. The annihilation or assimilation of... well, everything.

The species names didn't mean anything to her, but she could definitely agree with the sentiment. "Well, it seems like quite a few things really are universal. Or... multi-universal." She took another swig of her beer. "Then again, I'm friends with a couple of people who might qualify as 'angry bipedal lizards', so."
