Situation: Jim's acquainting himself with the concept of being, you know, on a giant turtle.

"That's not--" he trailed off, sighed. "That's not quite what I meant. I mean that the data will still be there in a few days, and it won't kill you to wait."

Honestly, the more they talked the more this girl reminded him specifically of T'Mar. They'd probably get along. He wondered if she had one of those sulky teenage phases too, or if Vulcans even did those. Probably. They undoubtedly tried to pretend otherwise.

"Why're you so interested, anyway?"

[notdreaming]

She considered him, riding the wave of stubbornness that was so characteristic of her life, even before the end of Krypton. Why did she care? Why did she want to know more about this world, find a way to fix it? It was her home now, the closest thing she had to one. There were people here that she loved.

"I lost my home once before. I don't want to lose this one too, not if there's something I can do to help."

[jirk]

A rush of guilt, of grief washed over him. It was like the cold sweat brought on by a memory of pain. Spock's, to be precise. What it felt like, seeing Vulcan destroyed. It was so sudden and sharp he actually had to turn away from her, under the guise of studying-- something else entirely. Vulcans do grieve, and deeply.

He resisted the urge to check her ears.

And after a moment, he held out the tricorder.

"Here."

[notdreaming]

She blinked up at him, and much to her chagrin her mouth fell open. She shut it and took the tricorder gingerly in her own hands.

"Thank you," she told him, and she meant it as sincerely as anyone could.

[jirk]

"Yeah, well. Don't break it. And don't tell anyone you have it. And I'll want it back. You've got twenty-four hours." He pointed at her sternly. "Don't make me come find you, either. You won't like that."

[notdreaming]

"Of course not!" She had long since learned to control her strength, and she had no fear of accidentally crushing the thing. By now she was beaming with her delight.

"Twenty-four hours. I'll listen for your voice and come find you." Already her feet were coming up off the ground. She had to see what she could learn.

[jirk]

Wait.

What?

Jim stared at her, just a little bit shell-shocked. "Listen for my-- why are you flying?"

[notdreaming]

"It's faster." She blinked at him, setting her feet back on the ground. She didn't mean to upset him.

"I'm sorry, I just wanted to get started."

[jirk]

"I know it's faster, I have a ship. I mean, not here. But back home, I've got a ship-- that's not the point why are you flying? Like. Scientifically. How are you doing that?"

He'd heard that there's some species' out there that had psi abilities that might enable, you know, levitation, but he'd never met one and this was suddenly the most interesting thing he'd seen all day.

[notdreaming]

She frowned at him. She thought he said the data went back up to his ship, which meant... that she couldn't access it without a console that could read the stream. That would be a problem.

"Oh, that?" She blinked, then looked down at her feet. "I don't really know. I've been meaning to look into it. It's just something I can do since I landed on Earth."

[jirk]

Don't worry, Kara, when the data can't rebound to the Enterprise it simply sets on the tricorder's redundant harddrive, instead.

"-- So you just woke up one morning and you could fly?" That is. Pretty impressive. And also a little unnerving. Aliens.

[notdreaming]

Thank Rao for that. Still, she looked both a bit embarrassed by her own lack of ability to explain and just as mystified by the transformation as he was.

"Well, it was more like I woke up one morning and had a variety of strange new powers I couldn't control, and then I was tossed in the air and I didn't fall to my death." It wasn't something you discovered on your own, apparently.

[jirk]

"...Huh." Jim gave her a faintly impressed look. It was a good thing she was way too young for him. "Well. Have fun doing science, I guess. Remind me to introduce you to my first officer if he ever shows up."

[notdreaming]

Her smile returned as he seemed to have accepted her strange powers. She had gotten mixed reactions in the past, but it seemed that people from strange worlds were much more willing to give her the benefit of the doubt.

"I'll keep that in mind. I'll see you tomorrow!"

[jirk]

"Yeah. Good luck." He watched as she left, one hand slightly lifted, partly in goodbye and partly to block out the sun. That? That was really cool, okay?
