Situation: Jim's acquainting himself with the concept of being, you know, on a giant turtle.

"Normally? Angels-- and God," she added as an afterthought, just in case. Stocking tossed her hair over one shoulder and then continued, "Here, I'm not so sure. Still don't think it'd be humans though, you can't ever seem to do anything without help."

[jirk]

Jim raised an eyebrow. "So you're saying you're an angel." He managed to sound only faintly incredulous. Hey, some girls were into that sort of thing.

[candystriped]

"Mhm," Stocking said agreeably, not seeming to care about Kirk's audible skepticism. "I've already heard the whole who speel about it being impossible," Complete with air quotes. "I really don't give a shit about having to prove it, so you can skip that part."

[jirk]

A slight grin. "Hey, suit yourself."

He shifted in his chair, bringing one hand up to ruffle at his hair. "So what's your deal, then, you just hang out and wait for unsuspecting people to spring fashion commentary on?"

[candystriped]

"As if they'd be so lucky that I'd give it out for free," Stocking sniffed, tapping the paper that she'd had resting underneath the plate of sweets. "I like reading, but this language is balls."

[jirk]

"Does that mean I owe you something? I must've missed that part of the conversation." She's feisty, and he can appreciate that. "What's wrong with the language, exactly?"

[candystriped]

"Too many dialects, there's at least 10 of them that I've figured out," she sniffed, as though the language had somehow conspired against her. Of course by 'figured out' she meant that she could tell there were differences, not that she could read them. Some angels had a natural gift of tongues, she wasn't among those who'd actively pursued that talent.

Despite her usual flippant attitude, Stocking had been paying attention to things happening around the city. She liked gossip and she liked being nosy and she was slowly building a knowledge base here.

Wow, of all the times to really miss Uhura. Jim frowned a little at the admission. He did okay in the command track's mandatory linguistics class, landed comfortably in the top ten percent, but it was never an area of application he'd been overly concerned with. Honestly, half the reason he'd even signed up for the advanced course was to hit on Uhura.

(That didn't work out so well, but hindsight is 20/20)

Still. He had a half-decent ear for it and he could learn if he needed to, but there's so much else that needed doing here it'd almost be redundant.

"So why don't you get one of the kedan to read it outloud for you? Follow along with the reading material, you'd get it figured out pretty fast."

[candystriped]

Stocking flicked a crumb irritably off the edge of her plate. "I've tried, they won't agree to help me."

(Wonder why, given her attitude...)
