Event | Satellite | Spectres!
Characters: Any and all!
Date: May 23 - 26, 2013
Location: Keeliai, turtleside, ARSHEPHELIOS cluster remains
Situation: Repairs and salvage operations operating innocently have triggered an invasion of spectres that possess and wreak havoc upon all they see.
Warnings/Rating: Please put CW in your subject lines
Satellite Crash Event
Crash Landing | Salvage Party | Shocking Spectres
Questions | Keeliai | ARSHEPHELIOS
Salvage is sweet, but not all is well on board the ARSHEPHELIOS cluster. The seamless cylinders salvaged from debris and the cluster, now being frequently traded, turn out to be pods the first time one is penetrated or cracked open. Each breached pod releases a flood of energy-based apparitions hellbent on world domination -- or, more accurately, person domination (and it's not the fun kind).
These apparitions -- spectres, if you will -- are driven by a need to protect the technology of the satellite cluster that their pods are associated with. They will stop at nothing to see this through. Each is immune to physical attacks, but seem to be injured or dissipated entirely by things like electrical shock or other energy-based projections. If people touch them, there is also a brief window of vulnerability, but it acts also like a door that swings both way. Through contact, these spectres can and will invade one's psyche, take over their body and cause them to attack friend or foe alike! Should the possessed body be subjected to sufficient electrical shock, the possession should fade. Strong natural will can also drive the spectres out, but it is no walk in the park to do so. Possession is not the only tool in the arsenal, for these spectres use electricity as their main offensive weapon. They'll leave deep-tissue burns on anyone they fight, and show no degree of fatigue after constant use of it.
Ten thousand of these creatures will be freed from pods, resulting in a veritable flood of Keeliai, the turtleside, and the satellite cluster. With such a driven enemy, it comes down to killing or being killed.
Meanwhile, those taking shelter indoors may notice that the spectres will get into the biomechanical functions of Keeliai. Consoles will be malfunctioning during this time, with lines of mysterious code and strange, ghostly images. One might hear people screaming for help or hours of patchy radio static.

He holds the construct phaser aloft.]
How long's this good for?
no subject
If you think I'm patronising you, go ahead and break my face. That's the one thing I don't do, and I'd appreciate being told.
[Blunt.]
When I said you helped me out, I meant it sincerely.
no subject
[He's done playing nice, so he'll just treat this guy with the indifferent neutrality he affords people who're useful, but on a divergent path. At least he's not dealing with another goddamned Commodore Daniels.]
Phaser, how long's it got? And is that map real-time accurate?
no subject
Evenly:] As long as you require it. Map's not real-time. I can drop you off somewhere if you want to look for your people.
[Somebody like this had to have friends, he supposed.]

Jim never realized what it meant to have a family until he had the Enterprise, and now... now, there's nothing he wouldn't do for them. But they aren't here, and that's an open wound with him, ripped open and raw in the wake of this crisis. He's met a few people he likes, sure. But no one he'd really consider relying on.
He looks down at the phaser in his hands, and his grip on it tightens.]
Thanks. I'll manage. Good hunting, Rayner.
no subject
And this guy was... trying to help him. By reading him, trying to adjust to him. Maybe Kyle doesn't owe him an explanation, but, he can't help having the feeling that somewhere, in another life, if under different circumstances, they'd be friends. He knows Jim's walls. They're Kyle's own walls.
He's too tired for anything other than raw honesty. Here goes an attempt at not being Kyle Rayner the Screwup.]
You're right. I'm not at a 100%.
no subject
Do you need help getting back?
[Because he... can't really think of another reason he'd just up and admit that out of the blue. He knows he wouldn't.]
no subject
[Despite the words, his tone is neutral: he's stating a fact. And it's important that he imply he doesn't have any grudges against Jim for doing it. After all, he'd been doing the exact same thing right back.]
no subject
Seriously? That's what this is about?
[It's not angry or accusatory. It's just a perspective he hadn't considered yet.]
no subject
Seriously. I get it [I do it too] but, it's grating me really badly.
no subject
Outside the bar, when I reintroduced myself. And then in the restaurant.
[Both times he said something, adapted to what he felt the situation needed, and both times Kyle bucked social convention and did damned near the opposite. Jim's looking at him again, with curiosity this time. Starfleet's all about diplomacy. And as much as this guy's rebuffed his attempts at an olive branch, he can't in good conscience do the same. Especially not now that he knows why.]
Okay, so how do we fix it?
[Jim Kirk: solution oriented. But there's a faint element of should we even bother trying? in his tone as well. Leaving that ball in Kyle's court.
Jim might not like being read, but for him, it becomes a chess game. A competition. And he plays to win.]
no subject
He's not really sure how to fix it though. With any other Lantern - they had years to build up trust, tours and battles and down-time. He and Jim only have the recognition that they're kindred spirits.
And in the end? He's not somebody to turn down help. There were so few people you could rely on that... it was sheer idiocy to do so. Yet - he wasn't ready to be pushed like Jim was pushing.
Kyle cants his head slightly to the side, mirroring the curiosity. He can't put it into words, that they're similar and different.]
You're playing chess. I'm playing go.
[What's the middle ground?]
no subject
So we switch to backgammon.
[After all, it's one of the oldest games on Earth. And it relies on luck just as much as strategy and skill.]
no subject
[Upping the stakes? You bet.]
no subject
[FAIR WARNING, HE'S AWESOME AT IT
AS LONG AS SULU'S NOT PLAYING
OR BONES
OR-- you know.
Any member of his crew that's not Cupcake, Chekov or Scotty.
(so maybe he's bluffing, a little.)
no subject
[Friendly teasing.
And then his ring has finally had enough and starts blaring. Kyle stares at it.]
I know! Christ, would you stop that!
no subject
Oh my god, it does that?
no subject
LANTERN RAYNER, REPORT TO ASSIGNED PHYSICIAN. THIS IS YOUR FINAL WARNING.
[Runs a hand through his hair.]
All right, all right, tell Soranik I'm on my way.
no subject
But he sobers after a moment.]
Listen. This thing-- [he waves a little, towards his head. 'Reading you'.] I can't shut it off.
[I'm not wired to, and I won't apologize. It's a necessary, an integral part of being a captain. Understanding the people around him, what they have to offer, what they're capable of, it's important.
He thinks about giving Kyle another considering look, but he stops himself. That might invalidate what he's about to say. Maybe it's the injuries (he knows he's exhibiting at least some signs of shock from those burns) or maybe it's the sleep deprivation, but he counters Kyle's honesty with some of his own.]
And I was pushing you. But it's because I recognize sometimes that's the only way to help guys like us. If you don't want the help, I'll back off.
[But it's in his nature. At the end of the day, he cares about other people, and he can't not.]
no subject
I get it, I do it as well; I have to.
[He's a commander too. He's perhaps not as conscious about it happening as Jim is, but it's still a valuable skill, and Kyle trusts his instincts, acts on them. It's what makes him such a good Lantern.]
Uhm --[how did he even deal with people outside his inner circle doing this?] thanks. I appreciate it, I really do, but I'm not ready. And there's one thing guys like us do know better than anyone, it's how to push people away.
[Which is what I was doing to you.
Kyle bites his lip, glances briefly at the ground before he meets Jim's eyes.]
You're not a rookie, or an idiot. You have that rank for a reason, and I didn't respect that. You have every right to break my face when this is all over.
[If there's one thing he knows, it's having to prove yourself to people, and he swore he wouldn't do to anyone what people did to him. So much for that promise.]
no subject
So I won't push.
[That much, at least, is a promise.
This whole thing's like looking in a mirror. Or-- well, listening to one. A slightly more forthcoming one. Jim's never been good at the share and care aspect of conversation.]
Man, you said it yourself. You don't know me.
[He's had to prove himself to so many people who think he's just his daddy's legacy it's sort of rote by now. And as much as it bothers him sometimes, it's nothing he hasn't faced down before. Kyle had (has?) no real reason to believe he's as good as he says he is, as good as he acts like he is. So Jim'll just prove it, and problem solved.
Then he's grinning, just a bit.]
And honestly? I wouldn't go for the face. Way too pretty.
no subject
No, I don't, [pause] and that means I don't know when I'm being patronising towards you. I'm saying - if I pull that bullshit, you tell me straight up to cut it out.
[You have nothing to prove.]
no subject
Deal. For the record, I know you let me win.
[A brief pause.]
It's what I'd have done.
no subject
Subtlety's my middle name. [Beat.] Need a lift? I'm headed back to Earth Sector.
no subject
Yeah. I'd appreciate it.
