Any extra juulan I can put aside helps. [Even though she had done nothing but just save it.] But I’d like to start if when I get my bending back. Then I can just earthbend to make good time.

[Finally, Korra swallowed the bread and folded her arms.]

Unless you have anyone else who can fly or just magically get them where they need to be.

Don't know any fliers, so it looks like you're stuck with the job. [Although Finnick does wonder if Traci can magically get them where they need to be. Probably. He doesn't know the full range of her abilities, but a few of the things have been impressive.

Everyone is impressive. And a threat. And potential allies. It's all a bit confusing in Finnick Odair's head.]

How much extra are we talking here? [He takes a bite of his bread.]

Hm. I know a couple of fliers, but I don’t think they’re looking for work, or even want it. [Or need it. Well, they might now that their powers were gone.] But that’s okay, not like I don’t have the time.

[Negotiating pay? Not a strong suit of Korra’s in the least. She’s never had to before.]

Um, less than what you were paying those kedan? [She shrugged her shoulders helplessly. If only Mako was here to help her out, he ran numbers before. He knew the money game. But there was a chance he might never even show up on Tu Vishan.] I don’t know, whatever makes sense to you I guess.

[Korra shamelessly dipped her finger into the jar and scooped out some jam on her finger.] You’re the boss, not me.

[insecrets]

I'd rather keep it within who already works for me for the time being. If they're in need of a job, they'll ask around about it.

[He can already tell that she's a pitiful negotiator, but money isn't as important to him as other things, and he doesn't need it as much as others do. So while he could bargain for less, he'll pay her what he deserves.

Still, he's quiet for a moment, as if thinking it over.] I think that I could pay you a little bit more than what I pay them. [After all, she's doing both fishing and hauling. The girl deserves more.

He smiles when she dips her finger into his jar.] Consider that part of your payment, too.

I thought the point of it was to save you money. [Korra asked before she put her finger into her mouth.]

But I do like the jam part. [Wiping her finger off on her pants, Korra screwed the lid back on the jam.] We can keep that part. I’m just about out of floating fruit jam.

[insecrets]

I don't need to be rich. There's nothing here that's worth throwing money at. [Also he wouldn't know what to do with money. He was taken care of as a victor, paid in secrets as Snow's whore. Money isn't an issue with him.]

I have a few more jars if you want to take some with you.

[alphatar]

You could throw that money at your other employees instead of just me. [Looking at the jam with a quirked brow, Korra nodded.] All right, that sounds like a good pay advance to me.

[Making more jam slush drinks reminded her of Jack’s approval when she brought him one while he was sick. A smile came across her face.]

How many boys have you hired? [The question was asked casually. She only knew of Traci as her co-worker and was curious now if it was just girls he had working for him.]

[insecrets]

I only have a few employees, so there's not many to throw around to. [Not everyone is into fishing, after all.

He doesn't even need to think about that question.] None. Boys didn't reply. Just you and Traci. [A beat.] Jack is technically my business partner, not an employee. Profits typically should be split, but it's Jack we're talking about.

[alphatar]

[Korra raised her eyebrows in surprise. For all the network posts she had seen from foreigners asking for jobs, she was amazed there was only two that jumped at the chance.] That’s weird.

[Suddenly Korra’s face brightened and she was incredibly attentive.] Jack’s working with the business??

[insecrets]

Some jobs aren't suited for everyone. I'm not too bothered by it. [A small business works for him. He's still getting his feet wet, metaphorically.]

He owns half of it, technically, since he helped with some of the finances. And the lure designs.

[alphatar]

[But it was fishing, that’s so simple to Korra. Especially when she can just lift fish out of the water.]

So, I’m working for Jack too… [Korra checked flushed and she looked away, smiling while biting her lower lip. That was a very interesting tidbit to learn about her job.]

So you knew him already and you guys made it together? [That must have meant that Finnick and Jack came from the same world. Korra logic.]

[insecrets]

[Finnick's eyebrows are rocketing sky high right about now. Oh. Well, then. This is incredibly interesting.] In a technical sense.

Not exactly. We met here. I couldn't even hear him at first. [Finnick's come a long way on the magic acceptance front.

He smirks, leaning toward Korra a bit.] So, you like him, don't you?

[An elevated eyebrow was all Korra could give at Finnick not being able to hear Jack. She had no idea that some people couldn’t see him, or that it took belief to see him. Since Jack mentioned he knew many on the turtle, Korra simply assumed that anyone and everyone could see and hear him. Jack was a spirit, but he was a person too and that made perfect sense to Korra.]

Why ca-pphhhbbfft [Her words were stopped when the blunt question registered, and she could only sputter. Giving Finnick a panicked look, she hastily grabbed a piece of bread and shoved it in her mouth.] I dibn’t thay thad!

[Even though she had spoken quite clearly with food in her mouth earlier she became barely audible. Korra started opening the jar of jam again, blushing furiously all the while.]

[insecrets]

[Not everyone comes from a world where belief in the strange and fanciful is realistic, Korra, gosh.

Still, her reaction tugs a grin out of him.] Yes, your reaction right about now is really convincing me that you don't like the boy.

[He pushes the last of his bread into his mouth, chewing contemplatively. Jack had been the same way, Finnick remembers. When he had brought up Korra on their fishing trip. So that was it, then? Young love.] Have you told him?

[Of all the bosses to have, Korra picked the one that was all too happy discuss the things she wasn't sure how to even approach yet. Caught with her hand in the jam jar, Korra just shoved some jam in her mouth and chewed, speaking quite clearly.]

Well, no. [Finnick wasted no time getting to the heart of the matter, and Korra had been waffling on that for a long time. Maybe this would be her chance to get advice better than what she had received in the past.] I just don't know about these things. Like, what if that ruins everything? I mean, it's just been me from my world for so long; [Apparently, Amon and Tarrlok don't count. And Toph was from an earlier time.] I've given up hoping my boyfriend will show up. [It had been close to two months.]

But I just- this stuff is hard.

[insecrets]

[Finnick's favorite thing in the world is romance and relationships, which is exactly why he doesn't really let people know about that part of him.

So yeah. He likes to get to the heart of it. He likes to see people happy together, without the same fears eh's had to live with. That Katniss has had to live with. Anyone in Panem, really.

His fingers tap a slow rhythm against the wooden table.] What if it doesn't ruin everything? Friends are... always there. Even if it doesn't work out, you'll always have each other. And if you don't, maybe the friendship wasn't worth it. I can't tell you to go for it, but I can tell you that sometimes, it's worth it.

[There is nothing but complete, firm sincerity in his voice.]

I tend to ruin a lot of things actually.

[Story of her life.]

I’d like it to be worth it. [Her biggest fear was being forever stuck on Tu Vishan. Alone.] But the last time I told someone how I felt, I got turned down.

[She wasn’t even sure why she was telling him this, but it was good to talk to someone about it. That and she had never seen him be this serious about, well, anything.]

Then I did go for it I think I really hurt someone. [A guilty frown came across her face.] I don’t want that to happen again.

[insecrets]

Hurting other people, being hurt. It's hard. I understand that. [He does. He knows what it's like.] But you can't live in fear either. Pain is a natural part of life. We love, and we lose. We're happy, and we're hurt. You can't hide from it just because you're afraid.

[Finnick leans back in his chair, shrugging.] It'll find you anyway.

[alphatar]

[Korra fought back the urge to say that she wasn't afraid.]

I don't like hiding either, but it's all just so- [She ran her hand through her hair and just sighed.]

What, exactly, will find me? [She wasn't sure whether that sounded good or bad.]

[insecrets]

I know. [He smiles gently. Love is a hard matter to deal with. Talking about it now makes him think of Annie, of how much he misses her. It's like an open wound.]

Pain, usually. [:'|]

[alphatar]

[The smile comforts Korra, at least until that answer comes along. Then she just squinches her mouth to ones side of her face.]


...Wow. I was kind of hoping it would be something else. [Physical pain she could deal with. Emotional pain, not so much.]

So I should just go for it and expect pain...?

[WHAT?]

[insecrets]

[He laughs. Poor kids. Why is he allowed to give any sort of advice that doesn't have anything to do with killing people?] We always are. Don't... expect that pain will happen. Just expect that it's a possibility.

Be hopeful.

[alphatar]

[So she was right. Sort of.]

So pain'll probably come, but just hope it doesn't?

[That didn't sound much better...]

Honestly, I was just going to kiss him. [Because physical contact works in combat, so it should work when it comes to feelings from the heart, right?]

[insecrets]

No. Not exactly. It could come, but it might not. That's what taking chances are all about.

[A snort.] Then do it.

[alphatar]

I will! [For some reason, that snort and that sentence sounded like a challenge.]

Any way to minimize those chances? [Surely a guy like Finnick knew shortcuts, or at least, Korra assumed he would.]
