Sinbrilee | Dreaming | Death

Art by Rica.

The city is lit by a warm orange glow, there are thousands of lanterns lit and burning brightly to ward off the gathering dark. It was once a grand, thriving place, and it's obvious by the quality of the Greco-Roman architecture, the high sweeping columns of white marble, the beautifully paved roads. There are aqueducts throughout the city that look as if they could be put to use today. In fact, if it weren't for the fact that the city's spent the last few hundred years underwater, it looks quite liveable. This city is entirely open to exploration, so feel free to send your character out to their heart's content. Remember, certain doorways will lead your characters into either Death or the Dreaming and these markings won't always be visible to them, so they should take care and be vigilant at all times!

Note: A separate post will be made for the events of the Bacchanal later in the month.

The smile slides off her face quickly and she wishes she could take back what she just said. Instead when he makes the gesture, she nods quietly but doesn't reply. There's nothing to say. She gets it. She remembers hiding things that belonged to her mother so no one could take them. And also destroying things and then spending the night in tears trying to put them back together. It's funny, how much physical objects can mean when someone gone. She spins the ring on her finger. "It's good you didn't let him."

A moment of silence as the heavy moment dissipates.

"I like blondes. Ex-girlfriend was a blonde. Dunno about aliens, never done one before. But I'm open to new things."

"Man, in that case. If any Orions ever show up here, you are in for the ride of your life. They're not usually into women but I think pretty much anyone would make an exception for you, huh?" His tone's light, the darkness of the earlier comments set aside and thusly forgotten. He's not sure what it would take to stay angry at Clara for anything. A hell of a lot more than thinking about Frank, anyway.

... And then, just in case he needs to clarify what an Orion is--

"Sexy green aliens. Red or black hair, usually. They've got these pheromones that-- man, I can't even describe it. Blows the mind." He laughs, leans back in his chair in a lazy, slouching sort of way. "And they love humans. I think we're like, this huge point of curiosity to them."

"I'm everyone's exception," She agrees. "I've heard it's because I have nice hair and a great figure." Two can play at this game Jim Kirk. Plus sex with aliens is quite a curious thing. Once an alien hit on her at a market place but the Doctor dragged her away and scowled about it. She wasn't going to do anything (it had no head as far as she could tell) but still!

Clara pulls her knees to her chest and twists to face Jim as he leans back in the seat. "Humans are a bit strange. But it's nice, yeah? Humans and other species coming together. I wouldn't say no to an Orion girl."

"You are everyone's exception," Jim reiterates agreeably. If there's anyone breathing that can't look at Clara and think she's beautiful, odds are they're wired wrong, in his opinion. His extremely educated and refined opinion. Jim's an expert on aesthetics, okay? And what makes a person beautiful isn't just looks, either. It's everything. Clara has that spark that pulls people in, draws them into her gravity. He's not even sure she realizes it, she spends so much of her time trying to hold people at arm's length.

He doesn't even tell her to keep her shoes off the seat. "You'd get along great with Gaila. She and I had a thing once upon a time." He doesn't add she's dead, and there's no trace of it in his voice or body language. It's an old wound, and although it still hurts to think about, he's given enough of his pain to Clara. He can man up enough to keep this to himself.

She laughs and shakes her head. "Flattery." But it's kind of nice to hear compliments. Real compliments and not 'you'd be prettier with a smile' and the usual comments she gets. Of course, her last girlfriend did make an exception for her. It didn't end well for them. Maybe she regretted that exception.

Clara scoots closer to him and leans against him. Just the light touch of her shoulder against his arm. "Oh yeah? A whole thing? That seems unusual for you to have." It was light teasing, she didn't begrudge Jim for his escapades. It's not like she reserved sex for romance.

"Most of a thing," he says easily, smiling. "And the sex was great. Like I said, they're hard to beat out in that department." Jim nudges his arm against her shoulder companionably. "I didn't start out very altruistic about it. She had access to the coding for the Kobayashi-Maru exam. Which, by the way, is an unwinnable exam we're just supposed to suck it up and deal with. So I'd kind of intended to use her to cheat on it." Funny thing to think about, that there was no one left alive who knew how he cheated, just that he did.

"Well then. If she ever shows up her send her my way. Break my dry spell." Being a nanny means generally keeping it pretty chaste and rarely going out. It's a sad sexless existence. Then she rolls her eyes slightly. "So you intended to use her and almost nearly fell for her. What a cliche existence." She's teasing him really and is actually pleased to know he didn't just use the poor girl.

"So did you beat it then? The test?"

"I didn't nearly fall for her," Jim's tone is quiet. Corrective, but not angrily so. "She fell for me." Which made him re-think the whole scenario anyway, because the idea of someone being in love with him was mildly (mildly being an understatement) terrifying. Commitment was just not a Jim Kirk ideal.

"But yeah. I beat the test. Are you kidding, of course I beat the test. I'm Captain James Kirk, remember?" He reaches up to ruffle her hair playfully.

"But you liked her as more than a tool to win," She counters. She's not going to let him get away with painting himself as so cold hearted. But at the same time she understands him completely. She can't deal with commitment or intimacy either. Then she pouts and tries to wiggle away to no avail. Really, they're the same age.

"Oi. And I knew you would I was just trying to be personable."

"Yeah," he says ruefully, smiling to think of her. He always did have a thing for redheads. "Yeah, I did." And he wishes he'd treated her better before the end, but that was one of those things he couldn't change so much as try to atone for.

He exhales, and shakes his head, dismissing that vaguely macabre chain of thoughts. He's going to focus on the positive here. His dad's car is here - somehow - and it's in one piece and although getting it out of the cellar is going to be an exercise in frustration, he's glad to have it. Weird as it is.

"You are plenty personable. Captain's honour." And he holds up a hand solemnly, to demonstrate.

And at that gesture she laughs and rolls her eyes, a bit like an embarrassed school girl but with more class. "I'm not. I've never really been a people person." She had friends, before her mum died, after that maintaining friendships became so difficult.

"You callin' me a liar, pretty girl?" he asks with amusement, giving her a sideways glance. "Because, you know, when I'm from with that whole future thing, that kind of goes with the whole 'impugning my honour'. I might have to challenge you to a duel."

"I'm calling you a tease." She raises her eyebrows and grins back at him before perking up at the sound of a duel. It's a completely ludicrous idea, but somehow that makes it all the more appealing. "Oh? And would you be challenging me to that duel expecting to win?"

"No, probably not. But Rose is definitely my second, for the record. You can face her wrath when you lay me out cold."

The whole idea is pretty ridiculous, and it just makes him grin as he fiddles with the wrapped leather of the steering wheel. There are way too many conflicting emotions bouncing around in the back of his mind like dust in a particle accelerator.

"She'd back me up as an understanding between women." Clara teases with a soft grin before falling silent, she watches Jim, all curled up on the sit next to him, as he fiddles with the steering wheel. This can't be easy for him, but she won't say a word. She respects him too much to bring it out. And she understands the feeling all too well herself.

"Curses! Foiled again!" He smiles, and smacks a hand down against the steering wheel, the sound of a decision made. "Come on. We'll probably need somebody to help us haul this out of the basement, no point sitting around here much longer." He doesn't bother opening the car door like a civilized person, he just vaults out of it and comes around to open Clara's door for her. You know, like a proper gentleman.

"If the lady doesn't protest?" he asks, holding out a hand.
