Situation: The kedan have decided to participate in an Earth tradition: Hallowe'en! But there are other mysterious things afoot this holiday and when people start disappearing they'll have to find a way to reverse the effect... though all of their selves might not make it back.

As the weather turns crisper, the nights and mornings carry with them a hint of chill promising cooler days to come, the month starts drawing to a close. This is a pleasant time, soon to be the season of harvest even on such a nomad as Tu Vishan. Yet the relations with the kedan have been good lately and even the Emperor's latest warning has not dampened the resilience of her people (both willing citizens and not) and so today marks a new tradition to Keeliai and it starts with receiving a simple, handwritten invitation.

"Come and celebrate the Keeliai of ages past..."

NOTE: NPC tagging will be mostly in the Palace Rewards and Touch of Memory threads unless specifically requested elsewhere! Normal rules for players writing NPC interactions remains the same as always.

MID PLOT UPDATE!
Through the course of investigations will be discovered that every Foreigner who went trick or treating has acquired themselves at least one pot of what appears to be iridescent paint, sometimes more than one. Experimenting with these pots (because lbr who doesn't want a few randomly shimmery possessions) oddly enough lets ghosted characters interact with them completely solidly. Which, if you've inadvertently been ignoring someone, might mean you get your new shiny lamp thrown at your head.

Now if people get the smart idea to the paint the paint, that would let ghosted characters get hold of this stuff themselves...

TL;DR - Ghosted characters can paint themselves back into phase. Eating the stuff is also acceptable.

[she turns the mask over in her hands and then glances around before slipping it over her face, and peering out of the eyeholes]

There's food, and... people don't seem so us versus them here.

[almost like what society might have been like if the world hadn't just fallen apart thanks to one thing. She'd been asked earlier if she imagined what things would be like if one thing had changed in her world.

And Keeliai was the first time she got to actually live that out.]

[ What heart he had left in him sank; he knew his hunch was correct that this Ellie girl had come in with nothing. If food was something to get excited about then you knew whatever they left behind was less to be desired. To say the least. Again he noticed how dirty her bag and clothes were, or how small she was, and couldn't help but wonder what nightmare she crawled out of.

He pushed aside how amusing it might have been to see such a small girl wear his mask. For a moment he saw how he used to see his younger brother: Small, big-eyed, and looking for something bigger to hide behind. ]

How old are you, Ellie?

14. I'll be 15, soon. What, in maybe a month or two? Damn... I mean, I lost track of time for awhile there, but I'm pretty sure it isn't that long.

[her demeanor quickly resumes being cheerful, now that she wasn't focusing on why she liked Keeliai. There was a lot to not be cheerful about, so focusing in on her birthday and trying to figure out exactly when it was... well, that was exactly what she'd rather be focusing on.

Joel would have wanted her to.]

But, okay, since you just asked a girl her age, what about you? What sorta things do you like to do here?

[ While her language was off-putting it came with such a vengeance that it was hard to deny she was definitely a teenager in spite of the wear and tear. Somehow that just made it sadder.

Amon knew there was no shortage of orphaned children on the streets of Republic City, or anywhere for that matter, but something about Ellie implied it wasn't that simple. There was no such thing as a tiny, well-armed orphan no matter what city slums you poked through. ]

My manners. I'm forty...or maybe I'm forty one; I don't remember correctly when my birthday is exactly. [ If that bothered him it wasn't apparent. ] I ran a free clinic for the kedan in the Earth sector, and I'm sure you've met Temeraire. A dragon takes up considerable free time when they need to be flown or tended to.

Hold on. Hooooooold on, wait a second.

You mean you get to fly with him, and you're not even the slightest bit more excited about that?

Not even a little?!

[flying... such a foreign concept to her. She knew about the planes that used to roam the sky in the days and years before the outbreak, but... to have it so close that she could almost experience it...]

[ Her excitement comes at no surprise, but Amon finds it difficult to stop his smile from widening. Ellie somehow managed to remind him both of his brother, and young Marius his protégé. ]

Sometimes. [ Amon shrugged casually as if to tease her. ]

Really?! I'll trade you!

[she offers emphatically, the mask slipping just a little bit, before she re-ties it. She could be a little holy terror to benders everywhere. But mostly, she could finally consider herself dressed up for halloween, to get some of the beads.]

Man, flying's one of the things I wish I could try. With a whole bunch of other things, but it's up there.

[ Amon now finds himself appraising Ellie not just to see how deep the cracks in her life had cut, but if she would prove useful in the long run. She had a look about her that already said she walked through hell, and coming here might have been nothing short of salvation to her.

Thinking nothing of it, he swoops around her and fastens her (well, his) mask more securely to her face. While doing so he thinks know wouldn't be the worst time to start collecting allies again. ]

If you can assure me you're nothing less than the best pupil not afraid of hard work, then I will speak with Temeraire about taking you on as a runner.

Are you fucking kidding me? Of course I'm a hard worker. Phshh.[she turned to face him abruptly, her new mask firmly in place. It would be the only time she'd ever wear something like that, but, hey, it was halloween. Or something like that, she was still trying to work out the finer details.]

But pupil for what?

[she pulled her pony tail out from the strings tying the mask, and though he couldn't see it, she was also appraising him for what exactly he was talking about]

Got a few people who offered to teach me about spaceships, but I'm gonna be honest. I'm not going to school.

To learn how to fly on a dragon as part of their crew. [ Noatak corrected after he tested the hold on the mask before letting her go. ]

Although Temeraire might insist on tutoring you in maths and the basic sciences, but it's more a personality quirk of his.

Being tutored by a dragon probably wouldn't be so bad... [well, she wasn't sure how necessary any of those things would be here in Keeliai. She was almost positive she'd never be returning home, and this was so divorced from where she grew up that...

She readjusted the mask.]
