Situation: Kristoff does not buy that he could be here and his best buddy Sven couldn't be, therefore he is searching high and low for a certain reindeer.

[Hey Kristoff, guess who's also staying at WA-2C? This young lady! She gives Kristoff an odd look when he asks about a reindeer.]

No, I haven't. Did you lose your pet?

[Oh! Oh! He knows the answer to this! ...wait, he doesn't, but he's about to learn!]

First, he's not my pet. He's my best friend. [He says as he crosses his arms. Don't any of you people have animal friends?] Second, yes. He's been missing since I got here.

Your best friend? [Well, Sabriel has a talking animal familiar, but Mogget definitely isn't her friend, though he may count as a minion. Still, she'll humor him.]

Have you considered the possibility that your friend didn't arrive with you? I was standing next to a few people the moment I was brought here, but none of them followed me here.

Yes. Reindeer are loyal and trustworthy. I've never met a better friend than Sven. [Why does this fact baffle so many people here?]

And-- [Had he thought about that?] No. [His shoulders deflate a bit at that admission.] That'd be ridiculous! Why not bring Sven?

[Sabriel bites back a comment about the man clearly not having met many people- it's unkind, and he's clearly distressed.]

Why weren't my traveling companions brought with me? Whatever spell summoned us here is- rather erratic, I'm afraid.

[speaksreindeer]

[It's cool. He was raised by trolls alongside a reindeer - experience with people doesn't happen to be his specialty.]

Spell? As in magic.

[That's not a tone of disbelief, just a flat delivery. He's clarifying.]

Of course. The previous emperor was a mage, and what else could bring us here?

That explains the ice.

[A reference to the wintery landscape and a roll of his eyes.]

And don't ask me. I'm an ice harvester, not a magician. All I know is that magic can ruin a man's livelihood.

I think that's because it's winter, and we're far north.

[Sabriel bristles, and squares her shoulders.]

Well I am, and that isn't the proper use of magic at all. Magic should be used to help people.

[speaksreindeer]

Should doesn't mean it is.

[It's not like he has issues with Elsa, just her winter-in-summer deal really hit him where it hurts.]

Well, people who are using it that way ought to be stopped. [Making sure magic isn't being abused is part of an Abhorsen's duty, though someone running around melting ice (because that's the first thing Sabriel thinks of when an ice harvester says magic is ruining things) is probably far more petty than anything her father ever dealt with.]

Is someone doing it here?

[Sabriel, that is the most logical assumption, and he appreciates the thought, but try the reverse]

Yeah. I've tried. It's not that easy.

[Kristoff looks around at the snow and ice that have made their home on this turtle, unable to quite answer that question.]

And maybe? [He crosses his arms.] It's complicated.

You're not a mage. [Which might be a little arrogant, but Sabriel's brief visit to the perimeter and her own conversations with her father have left her under the impression that people without magical training can't always do much against the Dead or Free Magic.]

If someone's melting your ice, that's an extremely petty and stupid use of magic, and they ought to stop it.

[speaksreindeer]

Melting? [Kristoff stares at her like, well, like she's somehow missed the fact that there is winter all around them.] Haven't you looked around? It's winter! There's too much ice.

[He gestures around them.]

Have you ever heard of supply and demand?

But there's nothing magical about it being winter. That's normal.

Can't you do something else until spring comes?
