After seeing him uncross his arms and gets the all clear that he's not grievously injured, Korra chuckled.

"It's fine. I'm not a big anti-wall-climbing person." It was light teasing and she set her arms on her knees. "And sorry if Naga scared you, she's a lot friendlier than she looks."

Of course Korra thought Naga looked cute as a button, but not many others shared that outlook on a polar bear dog. Especially when its eating or in motion.

"If you want, I can check you over for bruises." He was tiny, smaller than Korra, and she couldn't help but feel that the fall would leave a mark somewhere; that and it would be her fault in a way.

"...Naga?" A girl having a bear for a companion isn't the strangest thing he's ever seen, but it's still surprising. Akito hasn't seen any large animals like that running around Keeliai before. Then again, he still hasn't explored a whole lot of the turtle yet. "She's your friend?"

However friendly this Naga is, Akito still is peeved that the bird he was following was eaten. And he never even got a good look at it.

"Um- No, it's okay! A few bruises won't hurt me." Growing up being whipped and shot with rubber bullets, he ended up with a high threshold for pain despite being smaller than the average ten-year-old. Getting treatment from a stranger for bruises would feel too weird. "It was my fault for not landing properly anyway, ne?"

Korra smirked and gave a nod, her head motioning behind the wall. "My best friend, yeah." Referring to Naga as a friend instead of a pet was welcome, Korra always saw it that way.

Either way, he wasn’t afraid to take some bumps and bruises, and that was a good thing in Korra’s book. "Guess so. Were you thinking about using the dojo? The equipment’s free to use so long as you put everything back where you found it when you’re done."

As someone who was raised as a weapon and constantly being told he was a pet, Akito definitely appreciates anyone who doesn't use the term to refer to an animal companion. So Korra gets some points for that.

And now that he doesn't feel as though he's in danger, Akito tilts his head and stares up, curious. "What kind of animal is Naga-chan?" Because she looks like a bear, but didn't have the right kind of snout.

"...A dojo?" It makes sense to him that there would be one around, given the entire aesthetic of the city, but it never occurred to him to visit one. "Ah... No, that's okay! I'm no good at fighting."

The question always amused Korra. Animals from other worlds used to confuse her just as much. "Naga’s a polar bear dog. But don’t worry, she’s tame." Except when Korra told her not to be, of course.

"I’m Korra by the way." She put her thumb over her shoulder. "I run the dojo. Are you new to Keeliai?" Everything was pointing in that direction from what Korra gathered, but she hasn’t met every foreigner on the turtle so it was worth asking.

Akito nods because he's stuck living on the back of a giant turtle - an animal that's a mix of polar bear and dog doesn't seem any more unlikely. Plus it's much cooler than a big turtle. Still, he can't help the way he pouts: "She ate the bird."

Eye following where Korra points, Akito chews on his lip. "I'm... Gazelle. I'm new-ish."

"Gazelle. Got it." Testing the name out to get a feel for it, Korra waved her hand in a lazy dismissal. "Yeah, she takes her extra snacks when she can get them." The cycle of predator and prey was something Korra was comfortable with from growing up in the Southern Water Tribe.

Still, she knew a good pout when she saw one. Something she's a bit of a professional on.

"You want to meet her?"

"Did she it fast enough that it didn't hurt?" When you follow a bird for a while you grow attached, and Akito would rather it not have died a painful death. At Korra's query he pauses, clearly thinking it over.

"Only if I won't end up another snack for her!"

Korra’s mouth became smaller at the question. From what she saw, probably not since Naga shook the bird in order to break its neck and/or back. But the Avatar wasn’t too great at lying.

Which is why she only gave a nervous smile.

"She doesn’t eat people, so you’re fine." At least, not unless Korra tells her to. But details.

Seeing Korra's nervous smile in answer, Akito decides to believe that the bird probably wasn't in much pain - and even if it was, it wouldn't have been for long. It makes him feel a bit better about the whole thing. Perhaps he should stop identifying so much with birds, but they remind him too much of home.

"...Then if it's okay to meet her, I would like to."

Even if birds are his favourite animals, he'll always be a dog person. And Naga is the closest thing to a dog he's bumped into so far.

Disaster averted, and Korra attributed it to that perfectly well intended smile.

"Sure, come around to the entrance." Korra fell into a back flip off the wall and waved Naga to follow her to the open gate. She brushed off the stray feathers and got licks to her hand in return.

"This is Naga." She patted the side of the animal's neck as Naga sniffed at the air in his direction. "Naga, this is Gazelle."

Akito takes his time getting to the gate, using the walk to compose himself. It wouldn't do to be nervous when meeting an animal, since they can sense that sort of thing - or at least that's what he's heard. By the time he reaches the dojo's entrance he's calm enough to feel comfortable.

"It's good to meet you, Naga-chan." He holds a hand out, palm up, for Naga to sniff if she'd like as a sign of peaceful intentions.

Anyone getting Korra’s okay was good in Naga’s book, and sniffed at the proffered hand briefly before licking it. Which of course meant she would try lick his face and probably hair, because when she was in a relaxed atmosphere; Naga was really just a giant puppy.

That’s how Korra saw her anyway.

"Only tame polar bear dog you’ll find of Keeliai. Well, actually she’s the only one." But that didn’t mean there weren’t other big animals like Mrs. O’Leary. "Since you’re new-ish, does that mean you live in here in Wood?" It wasn’t a far off guess, but she could be wrong. After all, she was here and lived in another sector.

Not one to be scared of animals, Akito is delighted by the licking rather than unnerved by it. Plus the fact she has to lean down in order to reach him means that he can reach her in return, and offer a gentle massage of her jawline. When he finds himself giggling as his hair is messed up by a particularly enthusiastic lick, he realizes that it's the first time he's laughed honestly since his arrival.

"Naga-chan is very beautiful." Now that he isn't afraid of getting eaten it's easy to appreciate a giant bear-dog. Akito turns his attention back to Korra at her question. "Ah... Yeah."

Attention was something Naga never turned away, and Korra folded her arms when the polar bear dog settled onto the grass.

"First time she’s had an admirer I think." Teasing, but she was glad to see her animal guide happy. "Have you been to the Welcome Center yet? They’ve got a lot of helpful things for new foreigners."

Akito sends Korra a disbelieving look. How could he be the first admirer Naga has? She may be large and intimidating, but she really is beautiful. And if there aren't any other dogs in Keeliai, it makes it even more hard to believe.

"Ah, I haven't been there yet..." He meant to go a few times, but never did. "A few people have told me I should though."

Pets were something the kedan generally frowned upon, but Naga’s being Korra’s mount staved that off. That and no one had told Korra otherwise; an animal that big still has teeth.

"I used to work there. If you haven’t gotten any work yet, I recommend it. The owner’s a really good guy."

"I can figure something out on my own." Akito tries to put off the Welcome Center visit as long as he can, scared that everything will seem more permanent if he goes there. The inevitability of the visit is something he's aware of. "I can fix bikes for people until I find a good spot to teach people how to rollerblade."

That piqued Korra's interest and she tilted her head at Gazelle. Only disrupted by a curious eyebrow that rose at 'rollerblades'.

"When you say bikes, do you mean motorcycles or bicycles?" That one first, not only because she knew someone who had a motorcycle, but also since she knew a kedan mechanic in Metal that Dinah used to work for.

The Avatar can be insufferable, and she knew it. But income was pretty important in Keeliai.

"Um... Both? Bikes are easier, but motorcycles aren't too hard..." Akira had one, after all. His skills as an A-T mechanic combined with helping Akira repair his motorcycle occasionally gave him enough experience to be confident with them.

He continues petting Naga as he answers, and is sorely tempted to bury his face in her fur and just cuddle her. "They're all pretty straightforward, ne?"

"Then you may want to poke around in the Metal Sector, there's a few repair shops there and I just so happen to know they hire foreigners." Korra walked over and put her arm on Naga, leaning on the animal companion. The polar bear dog was happily moving her head so she could be scratched behind the ears.

"If you mean motorcycles being straightforward, they're not that easy for me. But I got Naga to take me where I need to go." She patted the side of the animal, which earned some panting through the dog's smile.

"Are there many places that won't hire foreigners?" He hadn't exactly been paying attention to any of the politics, but he supposes it would make sense if they disappear randomly like people have been saying.

"There used to be." Korra's smile was flat as she remembered when she tried to find a job with the kedan after she arrived in Keeliai during the rationing.

"But that was months ago. Things have gotten a lot better since then, so I don't think you'll have too many problems. There's always the foreigner run businesses if you do though." She really missed Finnick just then...

She isn't the first one to mention the rationing, but Akito never was able to learn much more about it. "Why were they rationing?" He reaches out a hand to rub Naga again should she permit it. "What changed?"

Korra was surprised Akito knew of it. She assumed most foreigners didn't talk about it much. Not exactly fun times.

"Tu Vishan was sick, so the crops weren't edible. But the foreigners helped him get better and even made a garden. A hydroponics one that only used water." That was a new word for Korra to learn after volunteering there, waterbending being a key element.

Ha.

"Before that, it lasted for a long time."
