Actually, when we travel we create a subspace displacement field. We technically step out of actual 'space' and into a corridor that lets us go FTL. Um-- think of it like a hallway that's been coated with baby oil. We have to keep our time synced with the Federation standard.
[And then, well. He lifts his arms in a c'est la vie shrug.]
I haven't been to all of them. Or even most of them. But I have to say, I love Calliope. Clear skies, oceans that go on for miles. Sandy beaches. Great place. Love the locals.
[They're all hot. All of them.]

Sounds beautiful. Maybe I'll get t'see it someday.
[She hopes so. It would be nice to visit a planet with oceans and nice locals and not a single ounce of trouble or danger. It'd be a real holiday for once.]
Always end of the world this, or saving the universe. Never much time for an honest break, you know?
[She wonders if it's right to be telling a stranger all this. She normally wouldn't, but he works for a place that sounds so close to the lifestyle she's used to living. It's not all that different, she tells herself.]
no subject
[And he actually means that. It shows in the way his smile softens just a touch. He's an unrepentant womaniser, but he's not out to hurt feelings or be an asshole about it. He has the most fun when everybody else is having fun, too.]
Huh, you too? So what's your story, beautiful?
no subject
[She shrugs, figuring that's the most simple and easiest way to explain how she ended up with the Doctor.]
I didn't even think about it, just knew I had to see everything that's out there. All the stars, the planets, different universes...all those things and even more than that, they're perfect. Never knew what I was missing until I saw it.
[She probably looks and sounds like a dreamy child talking about space travel by this point.]
no subject
[It's okay. His expression softens around the edges as she talks, and by the time she's done he's laughing and shaking his head. She sounds like a dreamy child, all right. One he used to know.]
And then it blew your mind, right? And you can't even think of the words to describe what you've seen, there's too much... immensity.
no subject
Exactly! You get it. Seeing all that, and knowing I could make a difference out there, there wasn't ever the option of going back. Not once. It's huge and scary out there, sure, but it's the only place I actually feel alive. Out there, I can be fantastic. Back home, or places like this? I'm useless.
[She pauses, and glances up at him.]
So, yeah, I'm a free spirit, guess you could say.
no subject
[And wow, does he ever mean that.]
So, been here long?
no subject
[She frowns some, shoving her hands into her pockets.]
So far it looks like we are, sorry t'say. I can't be, though. I've gotta find a way out.
no subject
Tell you what. We'll figure it out together. I'm pretty sure this place couldn't take both of us at once.
[Actual Optimist Jim Kirk.]
no subject
Deal.
[Laughing, she leans off to the side, swaying a little.]
Come on, let's do some exploring. There's no way this place can handle the two of us.
no subject
Pretty big place. Population of about forty-nine thousand, according to the tricorder. It could hold a lot more than that, but I'm guessing the resource scarcity puts a damper on that.
no subject
If they're just gonna tear us away from where we belong, why do they care if there's enough resources to go around?
[She's not convinced that they do.]
Anyone work out if we're here on purpose or not? That's probably important. If it's an accident, maybe the locals'll be more on our side in the long run.
no subject
[Hey, he's seen it happen. Not pretty.]
According to the local watering hole [ie: the network] it sounds like we're here because we're 'heroes'.
[Not a title he'd dispute, of himself. But still.]
no subject
[She seems a by surprised by the heroes part, but quickly goes from looking surprised at having it mentioned, to pleased.]
Guess that description fits just as well as any. Rose Tyler: hero. Has a nice ring to it.
[They cross an intersection and Rose wants to head one way over another, and she reaches down to grab hold of his hand and drag him along after her as they traipse on ahead.]
no subject
[That's a deep statement for him, okay? He lets her pull him along, grinning as she does.]
I guess we just work with what we've got until we can get home.
