There's a beat before he laughs, like the idea of him and Katniss is the most hilarious thought in the world. Let's be real, it is the most ridiculous thing.]
A friend. We take turns spending the night with each other. [He doesn't explain why. He likes Korra, but she doesn't need to know about their nightmares, the need for human contact to keep them sane.]
no subject
Um, wow. Okay. Then I definitely shouldn’t be having breakfast here. Sorry, if I knew I would have waited.
[It was odd, she wasn’t sure what to say because he had told her it was fine before and seemed comfortable now, but that was usually something Korra knew to be more of a private thing. Not something to be shared with employees. Let alone younger employees. Was she younger than Traci?]
no subject
[It's one of the most honest things he's said, and it's definitely evident in the tone of his voice.] You're still welcome for breakfast.
[As for age, he thinks she's old enough to hear something like this concerning sex, but he's pretty messed up.]
no subject
I think I would like that.
[Hefting one basket just inside, Korra fetched another one in the same manner. She did her best to keep attention to just the fish and off Finnick putting his muscles to work.]
Since you have more than just me fishing, how do you get all these to where they need to go in one day? [He did like to sell them fresh and had multiple set ups in other sectors, so how he managed that had been a curiosity for her. One that found this the perfect opportunity to manifest itself.]
no subject
Good. It's nothing fancy, but I have bread and jam and some fruit.
[He picks up the other basket with a grunt, muscles flexing as he puts it down inside.] I usually pay a few kedan for a cart to take them where I need to go. Juulan talks.
[With a grin, he nods toward the kitchen.] Go ahead on in. I'll get dressed. [With that, he heads back to the bedroom to grab a shirt and some pants to slip into.]
no subject
So you don’t have any hired carriers, is that because it’s cheaper that way?
[Business and finances were not strong suits for Korra. In fact this had been the first time she had personal income, and all she really did was save it. Spending it felt odd.]
no subject
She's a weird girl.] I'd have to buy carts and pay carriers, when I can just pay the kedan who already have the carts. I'd rather pay the fishers.
no subject
Then you could pay them half what you pay the kedan. [Folding the bread in itself, Korra held it up in thanks before stuffing in her mouth and spoke with her cheeks bulging.]
Then you could even get to sleep in and not your fishers knocking on your door at dawn o'clock.
[How she managed to speak with her mouth full was only an answer her parents could give.]
no subject
Also he is suitable impressed by the way she eats and still talks. At least he knows CPR if she ends up choking.]
Would you want the job? I can purchase a cart today.
no subject
ifwhen I get my bending back. Then I can just earthbend to make good time.[Finally, Korra swallowed the bread and folded her arms.]
Unless you have anyone else who can fly or just magically get them where they need to be.
no subject
Everyone is impressive. And a threat. And potential allies. It's all a bit confusing in Finnick Odair's head.]
How much extra are we talking here? [He takes a bite of his bread.]
no subject
[Negotiating pay? Not a strong suit of Korra’s in the least. She’s never had to before.]
Um, less than what you were paying those kedan? [She shrugged her shoulders helplessly. If only Mako was here to help her out, he ran numbers before. He knew the money game. But there was a chance he might never even show up on Tu Vishan.] I don’t know, whatever makes sense to you I guess.
[Korra shamelessly dipped her finger into the jar and scooped out some jam on her finger.] You’re the boss, not me.
no subject
[He can already tell that she's a pitiful negotiator, but money isn't as important to him as other things, and he doesn't need it as much as others do. So while he could bargain for less, he'll pay her what he deserves.
Still, he's quiet for a moment, as if thinking it over.] I think that I could pay you a little bit more than what I pay them. [After all, she's doing both fishing and hauling. The girl deserves more.
He smiles when she dips her finger into his jar.] Consider that part of your payment, too.
no subject
But I do like the jam part. [Wiping her finger off on her pants, Korra screwed the lid back on the jam.] We can keep that part. I’m just about out of floating fruit jam.
no subject
I have a few more jars if you want to take some with you.
no subject
[Making more jam slush drinks reminded her of Jack’s approval when she brought him one while he was sick. A smile came across her face.]
How many boys have you hired? [The question was asked casually. She only knew of Traci as her co-worker and was curious now if it was just girls he had working for him.]
no subject
He doesn't even need to think about that question.] None. Boys didn't reply. Just you and Traci. [A beat.] Jack is technically my business partner, not an employee. Profits typically should be split, but it's Jack we're talking about.
no subject
[Suddenly Korra’s face brightened and she was incredibly attentive.] Jack’s working with the business??
no subject
He owns half of it, technically, since he helped with some of the finances. And the lure designs.
no subject
So, I’m working for Jack too… [Korra checked flushed and she looked away, smiling while biting her lower lip. That was a very interesting tidbit to learn about her job.]
So you knew him already and you guys made it together? [That must have meant that Finnick and Jack came from the same world. Korra logic.]
no subject
Not exactly. We met here. I couldn't even hear him at first. [Finnick's come a long way on the magic acceptance front.
He smirks, leaning toward Korra a bit.] So, you like him, don't you?
no subject
Why ca-pphhhbbfft [Her words were stopped when the blunt question registered, and she could only sputter. Giving Finnick a panicked look, she hastily grabbed a piece of bread and shoved it in her mouth.] I dibn’t thay thad!
[Even though she had spoken quite clearly with food in her mouth earlier she became barely audible. Korra started opening the jar of jam again, blushing furiously all the while.]
no subject
Still, her reaction tugs a grin out of him.] Yes, your reaction right about now is really convincing me that you don't like the boy.
[He pushes the last of his bread into his mouth, chewing contemplatively. Jack had been the same way, Finnick remembers. When he had brought up Korra on their fishing trip. So that was it, then? Young love.] Have you told him?
no subject
Well, no. [Finnick wasted no time getting to the heart of the matter, and Korra had been waffling on that for a long time. Maybe this would be her chance to get advice better than what she had received in the past.] I just don't know about these things. Like, what if that ruins everything? I mean, it's just been me from my world for so long; [Apparently, Amon and Tarrlok don't count. And Toph was from an earlier time.] I've given up hoping my boyfriend will show up. [It had been close to two months.]
But I just- this stuff is hard.
no subject
So yeah. He likes to get to the heart of it. He likes to see people happy together, without the same fears eh's had to live with. That Katniss has had to live with. Anyone in Panem, really.
His fingers tap a slow rhythm against the wooden table.] What if it doesn't ruin everything? Friends are... always there. Even if it doesn't work out, you'll always have each other. And if you don't, maybe the friendship wasn't worth it. I can't tell you to go for it, but I can tell you that sometimes, it's worth it.
[There is nothing but complete, firm sincerity in his voice.]
