Event | Yard Sale!

Characters: Come one, come all!
Date: July 21st - July 27th
Location: The City of Keeliai
Situation: The rationing is officially lifted and the kedan are celebrating by conducting one citywide yard sale! Think big! Think small! Think tribbles! Think all!
Warnings/Rating: Tribbles. Lots of tribbles. Please indicate content warnings in subject headers as applicable.

The morning of the 21st kicks off with heralds roving about the city of Keeliai to declare that the rationing edict has been lifted and that citizens no longer have to contribute one-fifth of their productions (juulan or physical goods) to the communal stores maintained by the police force. These announcements trigger a state of celebration across the city as kedan drag months worth of hoarded items to the street to sell, steal, or trade in a wave of mercantile goodness that stretches for nearly a week. Not even the rising tide of tribbles seems to dampen their spirit, with kedan citywide finding new and inventive uses for the fuzzy paperweights.

Characters are free to do as they will during this event, with police oversight relaxed in the aftermath of the long rationing and strained relations. Impromptu sales out of suites will rarely be inspected and purchase made elsewhere are no longer monitored. Everyone is taking a breath of fresh air, so to speak, and most do not want their first fun in months to be ruined.

OOC: See the OOC announcement for details and this post for subheaders in which you may wreak havoc celebrate the lifting of the rationing. Feel free to start your own thread header if you like! <3

Don't be ridiculous.

[Her response is prompt. Brisk. And if she blinks once more than is strictly necessary when Toph asks another question--well. It's just as well her mother can't see it.]

More or less. There was a porch just above where you and the kedan were gathered. [Which is true, really.] I thought it was a good time to drop in--although I probably shouldn't have, if you're going to be so unrepentant about it.

[Toph is quiet a moment. The porch can wait. Somehow those words bother her just a bit. They wouldn't have, a long time before. But they do now.]

Well, you're kind of right in that. [She frowns slightly, her steps slowing, though her tone is more reflective than defiant.] I'm not sorry. Those guys, they cheat other people for a living, so it's about time they get what's coming to them as far as I'm concerned.

Sorry if it breaks your whole "Great Toph Bei Fong" thing everyone seems to have. This . . . it's just me.

[She draws a breath, reaching forward, her fingers grazing the back of Lin's.] Thanks. I mean it.

[Lin pauses, a little surprised by Toph's reaction. To think Toph believes her attitude is because she thinks of her as some kind of living legend--well. She's not completely off there. But disappointment doesn't factor into it. Would never factor into it. If there was anything she learned while growing up, it was that her uncles and aunts--and her mother--were as human as anyone else.

All the same, her expression softens a little, and she gives Toph's palm a firm poke.]

I'm going to have to check the laws on that one. Conning con-kedan might be just as illegal as holding shoes on Tuesdays.

[The words have nothing to do, of course, with the situation at hand--but they're easier to say than whatever the truth would be.]

[It is that . . . and even a little more. Toph, at this point in her life, has begun to recognize that some of the things she does cause other people to worry or become upset. That's begun to matter to her -- even if she's not willing to stop. It's more important to her that Lin not think badly of her overall . . . and that she can be accepted for herself, no matter how quirky she gets. She is human. And she's herself.]

[The poke prompts a smile, verging close to a grin as Toph recognizes it and the joke for what they are. Her fingers tighten around Lin's again, giving her hand a tug.]

Yeah, when you work that out, let me know.

So, "Mom" -- my treat for tea?

[Does this count as bribing an officer?]

[It would have been a picture-perfect moment, but: A pause.]

We don't look that much alike, do we?

[Lin suppresses a smile of her own as she glances around. It's not the friendliest part of Fire Sector, given the company they've been keeping, but--]

There's a nice place not too far from here, if you really want to spend your ill-gotten gains.

[And, well. It was only a matter of time before that particular question got asked, and she doesn't break her stride as she heads toward the aforementioned tea shop.]

Well, we're the only two earthbenders on the turtle right now, not counting Korra. I guess we looked close enough alike to fool those kedan.
