Situation: The rationing is officially lifted and the kedan are celebrating by conducting one citywide yard sale! Think big! Think small! Think tribbles! Think all!
Warnings/Rating: Tribbles. Lots of tribbles. Please indicate content warnings in subject headers as applicable.

The morning of the 21st kicks off with heralds roving about the city of Keeliai to declare that the rationing edict has been lifted and that citizens no longer have to contribute one-fifth of their productions (juulan or physical goods) to the communal stores maintained by the police force. These announcements trigger a state of celebration across the city as kedan drag months worth of hoarded items to the street to sell, steal, or trade in a wave of mercantile goodness that stretches for nearly a week. Not even the rising tide of tribbles seems to dampen their spirit, with kedan citywide finding new and inventive uses for the fuzzy paperweights.

Characters are free to do as they will during this event, with police oversight relaxed in the aftermath of the long rationing and strained relations. Impromptu sales out of suites will rarely be inspected and purchase made elsewhere are no longer monitored. Everyone is taking a breath of fresh air, so to speak, and most do not want their first fun in months to be ruined.

[Richard accepts the awkward topic change for what it is.] Just the one—Asbel Lhant—though I count myself fortunate to have been blessed by that one being such a close friend.

Indeed, it is a blessing to have close friends with you. I myself have Courfeyrac. [He feels the need to add something to that, to show exactly how much it means to him, having his closest friend in Paris also here in Keeliai.] I have been sleeping with him recently.

[Richard pauses, understands that sentence, isn't sure if he understands it, and then just kind of accepts the original interpretation without understanding why Marius told him this. Perhaps it's normal in French culture to talk openly about it? And Richard supposes that it is true your romantic partner should also be a close friend for a more successful and healthy relationship...

That is processed quickly, not even a second. What is more difficult is responding to it. It's not like no one has ever talked about sex with Richard before. It's just... not in situations like this. He doesn't have the script for this conversation]

Congratulations. It . . . must be very much a comfort to you.

[So wait, is Cosette Marius's intended spouse and Courfeyrac his lover? Well if Marius is a noble of some sort that makes sense to carry on a line; Richard's heard of it being done that way in the past.

Maybe Cosette is just Marius's best friend?? Richard could see himself referring to Asbel as 'my Asbel' and being similarly disconsolate over losing him.]

[And here is one Marius Pontmercy with an innocent smile on his face, utterly oblivious to Richard's inner confusion and suffering. He looks thankful, in fact, at the man's earnest response. Congratulations on winning the Pontmercy lottery, Richard!]

The only thing to do is talk delicately around the subject. He won't exactly go "no we're not like that" but he'll just... steer things away by talking about a platonic friendship. Yes, good.]

Indeed, it always has been, to have him at my side. I think you would like Asbel. He's a very kind and earnest man; it's one of the things I love most about him.

[The saddest part of this all is that Marius is not only Actually Not Getting Any, he has also remained a virgin to this day.

And oh, what a nice friend Richard has! Of course, Marius has not actually met Asbel yet, but how could he possibly not be?]

Then I pray I would meet him, someday. [Because when Cosette was still in Tu Vishan she had always wanted him to make more friends. 8'(]

I'll introduce you some time. He is always happy to meet new friends. [And Richard is beginning to realize that that much earnestness in a room could possibly be dangerous. But it would be entertaining, so he can't quite make himself not want to do it.] You'll have to introduce me to your Courfeyrac in turn.

I will. I am sure he will be delighted to form new friendships, as well.

[But then suddenly, awkward fidgeting!] Ah, I must apologize; I seem to have disturbed you from your shopping. [Marius are you only realizing that now.]

[Aww, fidgeting. Marius is a puppy. Richard shakes his head.] It has been no trouble, and a pleasure to speak with you besides.

[Timid puppysmile!] Likewise, monsieur. I must take my leave now, [because he really doesn't want to trouble you even if you say you haven't been ok ok??] but I pray we meet again in the future.
