Situation: The discovery of an artifact from the first war against Malicant reveals the land of Kithika within a dimension of the Death Plane... and just happens to be contained inside a bottle.

Commencing the morning of the tenth, a mysterious thick, black fog covers all of Keeliai with no discernible cause, making it difficult to see. Although it doesn't seem to enter houses or suites, it's literally everywhere else and can't be swept or cleared away by superpowers. Attempts to scan it with technology lead to unexpected and inconsistent results, with the findings varying from speculation that it is smoke from a coal fire to the occasional reading stating that it is black cotton candy floating in the air.

Following the official announcement explaining origins of the mysterious black fog inundating Keeliai, the call is put out for the Foreigners to attend the Palace and prepare to be transported to Kithika. Once inside, it is explained, they will be responsible for finding the source of the corruption and expunging it. Once they have entered the bottle it will be impossible for them to leave until their task is completed, making this an all or nothing undertaking. This is upon direct imperative of the Alderwood Emperor and he expects any and all combat-capable Foreigners to heed his order, and they are to report to the Palace of the Landed Sky without delay.

"Uhh..."

It's about all Sarah could manage for the moment. River was obviously thinking about all of this far deeper than Sarah ever had. The girl shuffled her feet a little, looking from River to the bottle. "It's uh... Well, I don't know much about it all yet? Or if this is even the same thing. My friend said that everything is made up of, crap what was it. Ions? And the ionic matter changes and..."

Sarah really should of left this explanation to Ixis.

Still, even the partial explanation seems to get through to River and with what seems like a great effort, she calms down a little and gives Sarah a tremulous smile.

"Maybe. Are you going away too?"

Sarah smiles back, more than a little unsure that any of that made sense but happy to see River not as frantic as before. At the question, she shakes her head. "No, no. I'm... gonna stay here. My friend is going in."

And probably already has gone in. Her smile fades a little. "I think I missed her though."

"You don't like being too late," River replies softly, crossing one arm defensively over her chest and her eyes were sharp, like she was seeing something on Sarah. "You've been too late before and it was bad, so now you always try hard."

It's a little eerie to hear, but Sarah keeps her ground and maintains the small smile she wears. "Does anyone like being late? It's never good for anyone, I don't think."

The girl shrugs her shoulders, motion slow and a little exaggerated. "So uh... what about you? Are you going in?"

River smiles at Sarah like she knows the deflection and understands it, but doesn't mind it.

"I don't know," she replied, looking back at the bottle. "I'm listening. If I'm supposed to, it will tell me. Not many people can hear it but I can. Do you know how to listen?"

What. Even. Sarah frowns, more than a little confused. For a moment she's quiet, straining to hear whatever it is that River can hear.

"Um... what is it, exactly?"

The older girl pauses, trying to find words to explain the feeling that resonates deep inside her. To River, it's bombarding every sense, suffusing every pore of her being. She reaches out and places a hand flat against Sarah's stomach.

"Like it's pulling out from here," she said.

Sarah stills a moment, trying to focus on what River's saying and feel what's being described. She's still not sure what's going on, but the other girl seems so genuine in what she's saying that Sarah can't not believe it.

"I... I don't think I understand. Can it be learned?"

"I don't know," River answers honestly. "Don't know anyone else who wanted to learn." A hesitation and another glance back at the bottle before she turns back to Sarah. "I can try? Later."

Slowly she nods. "Okay. That'd be kinda cool."

She wants to understand, if only so she can better understand River. "Hey, what's your name? I'm Sarah."

She gives Sarah a smile, tremulous but genuine. "I'm River." She lays a hand on the girl's arm. "You should go."

She could argue, but she won't. Sarah's well aware this is no place for her to be, and with all that's going on, she needs to get to safety. Again, she nods. "Okay. I'll um... find you later, after all of this, okay?"

The kid shoots River a small smile. "Be careful." And with that, she takes her leave.
