Situation: Tu Vishan has made landfall on Siaxhi, to explore the Dreaming Watch City of Valishaera.
Warnings/Rating: Please indicate content warnings in subject headers as applicable.

As Tu Vishan draws near, the heavy jungle visible even from miles out quickly identifies the landmass as Siaxhi, one of the westernmost continents in Konryu and one that has been largely untouched insofar as the kedan themselves have gone. There is a natural inlet along the southeast shore on the continent and Tu Vishan makes for that, though he fills nearly all of it.

"Ah, that must have been a bit disorienting." Enjolras, despite his mood lately, can't help but smile a little.

"At home, well, where I grew up, I would sometimes try to dive under ships, or to see if I could reach them, though I never DID manage it. Instead, I would get dizzy halfway through,and have to come up to clear my head, myself. I can hardly imagine diving under a surface like our host here."

Don rubs his head, more interested in the problem at hand than some random guy's childhood.

"If only I had my porpoise gear." He looks up and down the beach, seeing if he might be able to cobble something together.

Forging ahead is perfectly fine with Enjolras, you know, if he'd been asked. More straightforward,anyway, and well, he hardly needs to spill random details at anyone at large.

"Porpoise gear?" He's blinking a bit. "Like the SCUBA sort of things?" He's heard them mentioned a little, though he has no idea how that works. "I have heard people mention it."

Don's attention zeroes back in on Enjolras.

"Does anybody have one?"

[solo_patria]

"Not that I am aware of, sadly. Still, you might ask on the network, or something of the sort. I'm sure, given the number of inventors that seem to be here that they could knock something up for you." He was surprised now that it was mentioned, actually, that there was not more business in the line of water activities given where they lived .

He could "knock something up" for himself. But that doesn't help him right now.

"Maybe I'll just try again," he muses, half to himself.

[solo_patria]

If anyone might do it, it seems like a turtle has the best chance of anyone here, Enjolras thinks, rather interested in how that may go.

"Should you decide that, good luck to you." The words are quite sincere anyway. "It does seem like quite a good effort really. In the name of exploration and all of that,correct?"

"Science," Don says, though he supposes those are more or less the same thing.

"Ah, science, of course." Enjolras does have to agree that they are rather one and the same when it comes down to it. "Aside the fact that I am lead to believe the one involves more explosions than exploration, when you really get down to the facts, I suppose they are all subsets of the same idea. I...sorry if I phrase it wrong, I am no scientist myself. Only lived with one for a long time."

"Almost all my explosions are on purpose," Don feels compelled to point out. "What kind of scientist did you live with?"

[solo_patria]

"I AM led to believe that explosions do more often happen for..." How would Combeferre or Joly, or one of the parade of polytechniciens Combeferre had seemed to know, or even Leo have put it? "...controlled purposes. And well, with Combeferre, it was a matter of dabbling in nearly everything, but medicine and physics above everything else, really. What we had of the latter then, at least."

This Combeferre person must not be here, or you wouldn't have said you "lived" with him.

Not realizing his attempts at tact have been foiled again by his uncontrolled telepathy, Don avoids that question in favor of another.

"When is 'then'?"

What was...Enjolras finds himself blinking a bit, surprised because the only one he's spoken to like this before has been Taraja.

Well, no, not anymore. He left...perhaps three weeks, nearly a month now. I...is this some sort of cross worlds turtle thing? Taraja, my hatchling can do this too.

Outloud now, since the question was asked that way, after all, he's answering despite the oddness of the telepathy.

"1832. I am lead to believe that my scientific friends might have seen some great changes in their lifetime, had it been a full one."

Don pinches the ridge between his eyes.

No. This is our host having a terrible sense of humor.

"Our host" is accompanied by a sense of "that turtle under the city".

1832? And I thought 1986 was the dark ages.

Enjolras finds himself rubbing his nose and temple now, because the sensation, from a new person, is still kind of weird.

Ah, that WOULD do it. I've noticed that we tend to be pulled into different, odd situations, even, due to some of the machinations here. I've somehow picked up a few skills that seem ironic when I consider them.

Oh you crazy giant turtle, you!

1986...That IS further back than many people here, I will admit. But still! I've learned a little of the changes in the world since then, from some others, but I would still surely be lost in your world and time.

Don puts those subjects on hold to ask an important question.

"Am I hurting you?"

[solo_patria]

"Not so much, no. It is, ah, a bit of an odd sensation, but not terrible. I've not had anyone but Taraja so closely in here before, so your...presence is a little strange, but I should think that would pass quickly."

Don's not exactly interested in making a psychic connection with this stranger, so he decides to stick to speech anyway.

"I'm from 2006, myself. More changes in a decade now than used to change in a century."

[solo_patria]

Which works well for Enjolras, really. One turtle in his head is kind of enough most of the time, though no offense.

"2006. Not the latest of the years people have come from here, but still." Enjolras can't help but be astounded at the thought of so many things. "It is odd, really, how quickly change comes to some times, but not to others."

And, because he's heard so many things that make him doubt that the world is what he predicted long ago, he's pausing to ask something rather important here. "Your future, that world. Are you...happy there? In general?"

That's a pretty bizarre question from a total stranger. Don suspects they have different contexts in mind, but he can't imagine what Enjolras might be thinking.

"What's it to you?"

[solo_patria]

The context question does escape Enjolras at first, which is probably why he's ducking his head a little as he realizes how that sounds. Ah, English and your general context. How strange you still are to him.

"Ah, sorry that did sound rather personal. But I meant in the...general sense, you'd call it. Humanity, any other beings who've come to join humanity...I had hoped once that the centuries following mine would be happy ones, for all involved. It seems that the answer is different among those I ask, but more often than not that the happiness we hoped at home has not come true."

"Ah, well..." He rubs his snout. "America is engaged in a protracted war and the alien invasion was not very popular. But the economy's good and the technology sector is making miracles."

[solo_patria]

"A war. Precisely what I had hoped that we may see an end to once, swords built into ploughshares, no more need of fighting, or of dying. I suppose it should not come as a surprise, but I had hoped, once, it would be different."

There's a little sigh with that, but well, it could, always, be worse, right?

Don has a similar dream, but little hope it will ever come true.

"My brother loves to study military history. I think he told me once that out of all of recorded history, the only period when there wasn't a war going on, was when Russia changed its calendar so a few months of that year just didn't exist."

[solo_patria]

Enjolras still has the hope, it's only that he's had to reevaluate the timeline quite a bit. And then push it further out. It seems to be one of the points humanity must reach someday if they want to fulfill their true purpose on Earth and all of that. He can accept that it will not be today, or tomorrow, and that, probably, many, perhaps all of the people here will never see it come in their lifetimes. But that does not stop the principle from having its hold on him all the same.

"I would not doubt that has proven true." If Enjolras looks a little tired as he says it, well, with good reason. "I suppose, in the end, that what we must all do instead, is strive to make things as close to our own ideal, as we might, and hope it makes some bit of difference."
