Situation: Tu Vishan has made landfall on Siaxhi, to explore the Dreaming Watch City of Valishaera.

As Tu Vishan draws near, the heavy jungle visible even from miles out quickly identifies the landmass as Siaxhi, one of the westernmost continents in Konryu and one that has been largely untouched insofar as the kedan themselves have gone. There is a natural inlet along the southeast shore on the continent and Tu Vishan makes for that, though he fills nearly all of it.

She gets a bit of a look for the sarcasm, but not enough to signify she's annoyed. If anything, it kind of reminds her of herself at that age (and maybe even now). But she won't entirely let it slide.

"Of course it exists, just not for everyone. You could have been an alien." Then a shrug. "But I've never been either." Not yet, not her in this body, technically.

"Technically speaking, we're all aliens here." Point of clarification. That there wasn't really any need to state, and yet she did it anyway. "If you've never been, how come you're writing in Ancient Greek?"

She could think of any number of reasons off the top of her head. Learning it would not be out of the question. There were any number of schooling opportunities that might have provided her a chance to learn foreign languages. And wasn't it a common tactic for secretive people to prefer writing in them? As a way of avoiding people peeping in on potentially private or personal matters?

"On a technicality, I suppose." Another thing that vaguely reminds her of herself. Pointing out the technicalities.

Then she just shrugs. "Because I can speak it and read it. I prefer writing in it to English."

It's not the entire explanation, but she's not lying either. Annabeth isn't the type to bring up her dyslexia at random, especially to someone she's only just met.

A personal preference. She could understand that much. Japanese had been the universal language spoken in her time, but she'd always been quick to revert back to her native French whenever opportunity presented itself.

"May I ask what it says? Or is it a secret?"

[sophos]

"It's not really a secret," she muses. Her eyes fall downward, skimming over the words. There are some sketches interspersed throughout the pages, too. "I'm just taking some notes on what I find here. The architecture, mostly, but not only."

"Is there something special about the architecture?"

Her eyes glanced back up again, taking in the surrounding buildings. Looking at them anew, as if trying to discover something she might have missed previously.

"Yes." The response is instant, though she's referring to architecture as a whole. But then she pauses to think about the question again, looking around at the buildings too. "I mean - I'm working on that, for this place - I don't know how special it is yet, if at all. But architecture itself is something I study."

She answered so quickly, that Midii again couldn't help wondering what she was missing. It all seemed so...average to her. Structurally sound. Not in danger of collapsing anytime soon. Possibly even water proof.

Of course, she was thinking in functional terms only. When Annabeth mentioned studying the subject, Midii had a feeling there was more to it than just how well the building could keep you safe and/or dry.

"Did you study under a carpenter?"

She shakes her head. "No. Noo. I'm mostly self-taught, at this point. I don't build things so much as... design them, study them."

Annabeth's always a little weird about sharing that, mostly because she doesn't know how people will react. "So every time Asti lands somewhere, I like to get a look at the design landscapes of the cities here."

If she was worried about any sort of reaction, Midii would unknowingly put her mind at ease almost immediately. She didn't think it was weird or lame. She almost looked...impressed, particularly by the self-taught part.

"I've never thought about looking at the architecture before. Most buildings always looked the same to me."

Annabeth tries really hard not to look offended by that last statement. Tries to remember not everyone has an eye for architectural detail.

She's gotten a lot better at that over the years. "I guess some look the same, if they're designed to be uniform - but even in Keeliai, the structures vary from sector to sector. And that's only if you're looking at the outside, because interior construction is really varied too."

No offense was meant, of course. It had only been a statement of fact. Her being her usual, blunt self.

"I wouldn't know about that. The only room I ever went into aside from my own was Damian's. And his place was in the same sector, so it looked the same to me."

[sophos]

Her face falls a little bit, at the mention of Damian's name. They'd always had a weird relationship, but he was more or less an ally, at the least. Now he's just another person to add to her list of missing friends.

"Which Sector are you in now? Did they move you?" But she nods a little. "The interior design of Metal suites is a lot different from say... Water."

The two she's spent the most time in. "But one Metal suite to the next is built very similarly."

She noticed. A reaction like that...this girl must have known him, too. Not surprising. Damian was smart. He would have known other smart people around the city.

"Earth sector." Which, admittedly, looked different from her old apartment. But the layout was different too, so she never thought to make the connection. "...you knew Damian?"

"Earth's a good sector," she says it mostly idly, distracted by the other half of their conversation.

She sighs a bit, then nods. "Yeah. We met right after we both first got here."

"Were you friends?"

She couldn't stop herself from asking, even though, in the long run, the answer didn't matter all that much. It had just been so long since she had seen him. Talked to him. Or even thought about him, really, that it all came rushing back at once.

Annabeth doesn't answer right away. It's a surprisingly difficult question. She thinks Damian himself might've said no, which is kind of all the more reason she replies as she does.

"Yeah. I'd say we were." Her lips twitch. "He might have a different story. We were definitely allies though, most of the time at least."

[unetrustworthy]

The fact that Annabeth had to pause to think about it...Midii was smiling even before she realized it. That sounded like Damian, definitely.

"The same with us. Mostly. We helped each other sometimes. Though I think he helped me more than I ever helped him."

[sophos]

It's nice to see her smiling, especially given the circumstances of the conversation and Damian's lack of existence on the turtle.

"I'm sure you helped him, too. He just never liked to admit it much."

[unetrustworthy]

It was a rare occurrence these days. Increasingly so. Ironic, given that this world was one she had actually found reason to smile again in.

"I would watch Taraja for him." His turtle. Midii hadn't seen her in a while, but she knew she was alright. "We were both turtle caregivers, so he knew I would know how to take care of her."

"If he trusted you with Taraja, that probably means he trusted you a lot."

Annabeth smiles a little herself. "I have a turtle too." Her expression turns a shade rueful, but only for a moment. "His name is Captain Bobby Tennyson. Which ones yours?"

[unetrustworthy]

She was tempted to protest. Argue that it didn't mean as much as Annabeth might think.

Somehow, she couldn't quite get the words out.

"Her name's Riva."

[sophos]

On some level, Annabeth can see that. It's not exactly something she'd admit either, in a similar situation.

"And now I realize I got your turtle's name before yours. I'm Annabeth."

[unetrustworthy]

"Midii."

With a start, she realized Annabeth was right. How she used to introduce herself right away, out of sheer habit. And survival; the enemy--or, rather, a scout soldier patrolling the area--was less likely to shoot if they knew who you were. She didn't have to worry about anything like that here, and had developed a habit of diving straight into the point.

"And that's alright. I knew your turtle before I knew your name, too."

She shrugs it off, waving her hand. "Propriety doesn't seem all that important here. The turtles, however, do. Hello Midii."

Annabeth would be lying if she didn't admit to being somewhat curious about the girl though - how many people can call themselves a friend of Damian's like that? Whether or not Midii actually said so out loud, it's pretty clear that was the case.
