Situation: Tu Vishan begins to dive to the ocean floor and the city of Keeliai seems unbothered by the process. Bonfire funtimes are made available to all!

If what you're saying is true, what are you going to do when they ask you to take up arms for them?

I don't know. If I can help it, I'm going to find out what it is beforehand. Whether they like it or not. [And she sounds super determined over this.]

[Takes another sip, admiring her determination.] Whenever you need some help with it, give me a shout. I know a couple of people who might be helpful.

[sophos]

People like who?

[She pauses.] Though I never quite caught your name either.

John. [Leaves out the last name he usually goes with. Something tells him that she's not going to buy his name being "John Doe".

Holds his hand out to her.]

[She holds her hand out in return.] Annabeth. Likewise.

[Gives her hand a solid shake before releasing it. Sits down next to her.]

Have you been through something like this before? You don't sound all that panicked or shaken.

Which this specifically? Diving underwater on a giant turtle or the situation in general? Because I can safely say I've never gone scuba diving on a turtle before.

All of it. Most people your age would be freaking out at any of this. [Not that he's much older than her. He's guessing he has three or so years.]

I need some liquid courage to help me get through it. [Raises his drink.]

Well, truth be told, it probably isn't the weirdest thing that's happened to me. I'm a little better prepared, since weird stuff is kind of standard.

Can I ask what the weirdest thing that's ever happened to you is?

[sophos]

There's probably too much for just the weirdest.

[Holding up the sky is probably up there. She unconsciously touches her hair, where the grey streak has faded, mostly gone.]

How's giant underground magical labyrinth?

Did you run into the Goblin King? [Grins, amusing himself.] I'd run around in a magical labyrinth if it meant I could rock out with David Bowie.

[Briefly follows her hand, looking away after a couple of seconds.]

[The reference... isn't entirely understood. She's horrible with most pop culture.]

Only if he called himself the Ghost King instead. [Oh, Nico.]

But I wouldn't recommend it, even if it was still standing. It wasn't exactly vacation destination of the year.

No, not exactly. [Gives her a funny look, making a mental note to slip some music her way soon.]

What were you doing in there?

I know who David Bowie is. [JUST FOR THE RECORD. Though she frowns a little at that look.]

A couple of reasons. To find its creator, mostly, and stop an invasion.

Good, otherwise I was going to have to find a way to send you a bunch of music. [Might still do it.]

Running around in a magical underground maze stopped an invasion? Sounds like the kind of place you'd want to dump your enemies into so they can't get out.

[sophos]

I could probably find it myself. [Sort of noncommittal.]

Except they planned on using it for their invasion, provided they were able to navigate it. We had to beat them to it.

Hm, gotta give it to them, that's not a bad idea. Though it seems like a lot of trouble to invade somewhere. I'm guessing the defenses at wherever you where were tight and the maze exploited a weakness?

[sophos]

Bingo.

It didn't work, for the record. The invasion was stopped in the end.

[A frown tugs at his lips.] What kind of place sends someone your age to stop an invasion? Aren't there adults who can get the job done? Unless you have some kind of amazing superpower like half the people here.

[sophos]

I don't. [But there's maybe implication that others do. Also not going to mention she was fourteen at the time.] I've been training since I was seven though. And it wasn't just me.

But no, there aren't really any adults, nobody who'd intervene. It's kind of how it works.

[Because the gods do jackshit.]

[Jason has never been as good with faking his identity as the rest of the Batclan. There's a distinct look of anger that flickers through his eyes.]

Heh, wish I could say I'm surprised, but I'm not. There are a lot of people out there who don't intervene when they should. It's easier to ignore it and not get involved, or profit from whatever is going on.

[sophos]

I can't do that. [She caught the anger, but lets it go unremarked. She's a little more familiar with that feeling than she used to be.]

If I did nothing, if I had done nothing, too many people would die. [THE WORLD WOULD HAVE ENDED but shh] Just because something is easier doesn't mean it's right.

Exactly. Sometimes you have to make the hard choices. The choices that other people don't want to make. [Knocks back the rest of his drink.]
