Situation: Tu Vishan continues swimming along the ocean floor after his monumental dive, but it turns out there are a whole bunch of undead that want in on the party!

[ For someone so small, Lina's actually been faring pretty well against the jiangshi. It helps that she's dealt with undead before. It helps even more that she can shoot fire from her fingertips at will. That's been pretty handy. She hasn't even felt like she's tiring out too much! And when she is tired, she's got a nice, fortified, barrier-protected suite to go back to. And hey, after this all blows over she can go and backcharge those nice civilians for her services!

It's all going decently well. Until this kid barrels right into Lina, somersaulting over her and knocking her to the side. ]

Wh -- hey, watch it --

[ Lina windmills her arms frantically, staggering a few steps on unsteady feet -- she manages to catch herself, but just barely, and then oh god oh GOD there's a disembodied arm grabbing at her ankle, muddied fingers digging into her boot. ]

Augh -- Flare Arrow!

[ A little beam of fire hits the arm, and it disintegrates into ash almost immediately. Lina shakes her leg off, making a face, and then immediately rounds on Brandon. ]

Hey, what the hell is wrong with you, kid?! Don't you know you should watch where you're going when you're in the middle of a battlefield? These things are dangerous! One bite could be fatal!

[sharpes]

[Brandon scrambles to his feet with all the grace of a three minute old gazelle. Which is to say: none at all. And his attention is only half on Lina, because he's too busy incinerating the zombie creeping across the ground with a bolt of flare-white lightning.]

Hey! It takes two to tango, you know. It's not like I was aiming for you. Jesus, couldn't you have moved?

[ oh do you want to argue Brandon

do you

Lina's voice goes up about twenty decibels and oh yes she is shouting angrily at you ]

Hey! Don't you go blaming this on me! I don't know if you noticed, but I've kind of got my hands full killing these things! You're the one who wasn't looking where he was going, so don't you try to lay the blame on me, kid! Who even runs through a battlefield half-cocked with his eyes closed like that, anyway?!

[sharpes]

Will you shut up?! All I want to do is get somewhere safe for five minutes. Help me or get out of my way!

[There's almost a sense of desperation in his voice. Brandon is not very good at being seventeen sometimes.]

[ ugh Lina totally can't stand obnoxious kids like Brandon but she also can't help but notice that he sounds desperate and probably scared, and okay, her heart goes out to the guy a little. A little. Her expression softens, although she doesn't sound any less impatient. ]

All right, all right! Jeez, a little tip for next time, kid? You want help, don't go running into people head-on like that.

[ Grumble grumble. She's done now. ]

Get close, okay? I'm going to put up a barrier around us. It'll keep them at a safe distance while I burn these ugly suckers down. How much of a range do you have on your powers?

[sharpes]

Couple hundred feet? It's lightning. ['what do you want from me'] But, uh, I can make barriers too.

[HE'S CALMING DOWN A LITTLE god he hates the undead. Or any kind of dead. After the sacrifice on the Turtle all those months ago he's had a real problem with dead bodies, okay?]

[ Yeah uh Lightning Boy seems a little too twitchy on the trigger right now for Lina to want him to make a barrier. She holds up her hands with a half-forced grin, shaking her head. ]

No, really, let me handle it! As long as you can keep shooting those things down, I'll make sure they don't get too close. And I can keep a barrier going and cast spells, so I can cover you if I have to!

[sharpes]

There is no part of that plan that sounds like getting to cover.

[LINA YOU'RE BAD AT THIS.]

[ WHO'S BAD AT THIS ]

Uh, hello? I don't know if you noticed, but we're surrounded by zombies. We have to open up a path to safety!

[ ...Unless. ]

-- I mean, I don't even know if flying us out would work, those things keep falling from above, too!

[sharpes]

Do it.

[HE WILL TAKE FLYING OVER BEING SURROUNDED THANKS. COME ON LINA.

Also he is just totally nonchalant about this whole flying thing. Because reasons.]

Okay, okay!

[ It's not the worst option, but... okay, there's definitely a tinge to Lina's cheeks as she looks at Brandon, pursing her lips. ]

You're -- gonna have to hold on, okay?

[sharpes]

[wait, what?]

... To what. To you? Seriously?

Hey, buster, I'm not exactly thrilled about it either --

[ Lina's face goes a little redder, and she looks back at him with a quick jerk of her head. ]

Wait a minute! What's wrong with me, huh?!

[sharpes]

Wh-- nothing! I just. Having some guy you don't know hang all off of you.

[ISN'T THAT WEIRD

but hey at least it's taken his mind off the absolute terror of zombies, zombies everywhere. He zots one nearby with a charge so extreme it actually superheats and crumbles from the inside out.]

Of course it's weird! Do you want to get out of this alive or not?!

[ Honestly, this whole thing almost makes her miss Gourry. The big lug always clung to her whenever they had to fly anywhere, but after a while she'd stopped minding so much. But that was Gourry. This is...Lightning Boy, who's apparently got one serious trigger finger. ]

[sharpes]

[FINE THEN

he just. Tries to grab onto her in what is quite possibly the most chaste manner ever

of all time]

Can we freakin' go now?

Okay, okay! Sheesh, talk about impatient. Levitation!

[ Lina sharply waves one hand, and the air seems to swirl around them as...they clear the ground and ascend into the air with a faint whoosh. It's something that Lina's done thousands of times -- and frequently with a passenger onboard, too -- so it doesn't faze her, but...maybe Brandon's not so used to gliding ten, fifteen feet above the ground. Lina, on the other hand, loves it. ]

Now that's better! Man, I was getting real sick of those things. Talk about gross!

[sharpes]

[He may or may not be muttering 'holyshit' repeatedly in a rapidfire stage whisper as he clings onto her quite insistently.

Flying is nothing new. Flying when 'falling' means getting ripped apart by angry zombies? Means something else entirely.]

Gross is literally the least of my concerns at the moment. Where are we even gonna go?

[ Okay Brandon could really stand to loosen his grip a little, but whatever. Lina's flown in worse conditions. ]

Uh...honestly, hadn't thought that far. Anywhere's better than here, though. Maybe we can find someplace where there aren't so many of them.

[ And then, because you really can only let a guy cling to you in midair for so long without asking: ]

So, um...got a name, Lightning Boy?

[sharpes]

Land on a roof. In the Metal Sector, they've got the tallest buildings. Can you make it that far?

[... And then she wants his name? How does that even--]

Striker.

[dragonswag]

Striker, huh? Well, I'm Lina. Lina Inverse!

[ She sounds confident, maybe even cheerful, all things considered. ]

Please, that's a piece of cake. Sounds like you've got a plan, Striker.

[sharpes]

[stop being so cheerful. stop it.]

Yeah, 'be as far away from the zombies as possible.'
