I...though you were dead.
There was a zombie. It looked just like you.
no subject
[That had been bad enough. He tenses at the memory.]
no subject
[They were almost to the castle now. She was still shivering, but no longer from the cold. His body warmth was enough to keep that at bay.]
If you were here the whole time...how could there be a Zombie of you too? It even had your costume on.
no subject
I don't know. I- I guess my soul left and the magic made my body reanimate. Because of the rules of life and death here, I was brought back but had to... completely regenerate.
[He swallows. Not something he likes to think about.]
no subject
So you did die.
[It was just as she had heard before. The foreigner who had died during the kedan gang wars had been brought back. Pulled from the water. Not unlike--]
[A sudden thought occured to her, head jerking upward with a start. She turned back in the direction they'd just come from, the words passing through her lips before her brain could catch up with her mouth.]
But, I...
[Had she died too? She'd been pulled from the water. Granted, she'd been in the water at the time. And nobody had ever confirmed whether or not she'd actually drowned. The possibility was still there. Which meant there could've been a Zombie of her right at that very moment.]
[...only she hadn't wanted Robin to know that.]
no subject
[Having never died before, he can't be sure.
Her changing expression has him concerned.]
What happened?
no subject
[She was too tired to do anything but the third, but that didn't mean she would look him in the eye as she told him.]
I think...I might've drowned.
[Thus, why her hair and clothes were still damp.]
no subject
[Wow that's. Now he's really concerned.]
How?
[You know, minus the super secret thing about the necklace. They are at the palace.]
no subject
One of the kedan children fell into the water. He was so young...maybe six or seven. He didn't know how to swim. His friends were crying.
By the time I found him down there, he was unconscious. I figured...if I could just put the necklace around him, I'd be able to hold my breath long enough to get us both out of there.
[A wince. It had been stupid, she knew. She hadn't been thinking. Everything happened so fast.]
What I didn't realize was that we were in so deep, the shock of the sudden pressure would knock me unconscious. And...that's the last thing I remember.
no subject
Wait, but Robin brought you here.
no subject
[It wasn't definitive proof, considering neither of them knew how it worked completely, but it was pretty damning evidence.]
[She rubbed at her arms, the chill starting to return. Only this time, it was more within. The burden of knowledge that they both had potentially died. She could barely wrap her head around the thought, and here she was, trying to convince her best friend that it was the truth.]
no subject
[Now that the shock of Zatanna's declaration was wearing off...]
I'm pretty sure he said you "almost" drowned. And Robin is very precise with his wording.
no subject
[She nodded.]
Can we just...go inside? Somewhere quiet. [She wasn't in much of a mood to be her usual social butterfly self.] I can't think about this right now.
[Even though, unless somebody distracted her...or she fell asleep...that's exactly what she would be doing.]
no subject
[He guides her into the palace. With a little expert weaving, he finds the nook he noticed the other day. Quiet, away from the panicked foreigners and kedan and the sound of the police force's leaders giving orders.]
no subject
[Just in case he had any plans that didn't involve staying with her right then.]
no subject
He sits down next to her, close enough that their shoulders are barely brushing. Some physical contact to keep both of them grounded to reality, but nothing awkward.]
no subject
[When, suddenly, she turned and rested her forehead against his shoulder. Hair falling to obscure her face on all sides. Not out of any sudden need to be chalant or for closeness or anything. She did it so that he wouldn't see the tears starting to fall.]
[Above all else, she refused to let him see her cry.]
no subject
This was a disaster. Emphasis on the 'dis.']
no subject
[When he placed his hand on her shoulder, she leaned into the touch almost desperately. Physical contact was a comfort. Her father may have seemed cold and calculating to most who knew him, but he was never without time to hug his only daughter whenever she had needed it.]
I hate this place.
[The words came out a semi-coherent murmur. In between quiet sobs and discreet wipes at her eyes, all the while still vainly attempting to hide from him. She hated everything. The Emperor for bringing her here. Fate, for trapping her so that she would be brought here. Partially herself, for getting into this whole mess.]
no subject
He wraps her in a loose hug. If he were being honest, he needed comforting as much as she did.]
no subject
['I'm glad you're here, Robin.']
